How to make the addition of Fishing interesting. (IDEAS THREAD)

  • Fishing O fishing... probably one of the most requested features on the forums, for reasons unknown to me.

I personally shudder at the thought of development time and resources being put into such an effort, however I am clearly on a very small minority of people.

Every time I have personally seen a fishing mechanic in a game it has been extremely boring, tedious and repetitive. They usually range from sitting down and doing nothing for a while until the float gets pulled under or pressing buttons at a particular time in combination. It then usually leads to a random chance of getting something and most of the time that’s an old boot of no interest to anyone.

The only relatively interesting fishing experiance in a game I can personally say wasn’t to sleep inducing was that of “Assassins Creed Black Flag” (I know it’s a dirty word, but I liked it so meh!) where you went out in a rowboat and done some whaling. However just yesterday Rare did say they don’t like the idea of us killing dolphins and other creatures like that in game so I’m going to go on a whim and assume the same for Whales ect..which I can agree with I don’t believe it fits the nature of the game.

So my question and request to the community is this:

What suggestions and ideas do you have which could have Fishing introduced into the game and not be the usual boring mechanics?

Hopefully we can get some great ideas down for the team to read so when it is eventually introduced it will be an interesting unique take on the experiance. :)

  • At rhe rick of beeing pilloried, my suggestion is not to waste time or effort developing, implementing, and maintaining fishing. I've never understood why people are obsessed with it in a pirate game when there are so many other features that would seem more appropriate thematically. Not to mention that whe ever something new is added to the game it tends to break a small pile of things, and I dont see a fishing minigame as worth it. If you really have to fish while sailing I'm sure there are any number of similators in your phones app store that are probably just as good as anything rare will throw in game.

I would be interested in someone explaining why this is such a widespread request for the game. After which you are all free to go ahead and keelhaul me.

  • No need for Sea of fishers, i really would be mad if i loot a ship with tons of fish on it....

It doesnt have to be whales or dolphins though, it could a be very hostile creature, like sharks (in game I mean, not IRL), like that we wouldn't feel bad lol. Harpooning could be fun and dynamic I think

I love to do absolutely nothing in this game, just sitting and waiting so I don't mind waiting for a float to pull down haha, I'm curious to see how Rare will implement it if they do.

I understand what you are saying about the time and ressources involved for this feature. I agree, I believe there are much important stuff to add or to rework but maybe I'm wrong but I think fishing is not Rare's priority.

  • @William-Flint @Zannarii Im off the same mindset, however so many people have requested it and there isn’t really an interview that happens without the question when is Fishing being introduced.

So it’s going to happen at some point. My thinking is if it is going to happen let’s at least try and make it interesting and fun.

@DrBullhammer Ba dum cha! Aye he’s here all week! XD

@JetOrchidee97 Well at least if there Is commendations I know who to ask to sign into my account and do them all for me xD

    Haha Well played!

  • @knifelife as I understood from E3 podcast, fishing will be just a way of spending time during travels... It's not an activity for objectives.
It's like playing our hurdy-gurdy around.
A way of interaction and socialize and see who can grab the bigger fish.

    1. When you have front wind start fishing
    2. You can be 1 or more for the same fish-line
    3. Some fish are more Rare than others (and so harder to catch alone)
    4. Make an "ima skilled fisherman" outfit +the "rarest fishs" list.

Problem is now adding ZeldaOOT-like fishing game to SoT
Minigame-fishing-anything could be added when you are on the seas, waiting.

  • @knifelife Ive been thinking, and I have had a change of heart. Yes fishing is boring, but it is also relaxing. And if people are coming to a game where a majority of the ither players may well try to kill them on sight in order to relax, they must have it pretty rough and maybe we should just let them fish.

As for something to do while sailing...the kindly devs gave us a bottemless barrel of grog, how much more shoild we expect from them.

What suggestions and ideas do you have which could have Fishing introduced into the game and not be the usual boring mechanics?

Requesting exciting new mechanics for the non-exciting nature of actual fishing might be a bit of a stretch. I believe fishing was mostly requested as something to do while sailing from A to B, which limits you to what is possible from your ship.

I did look around a bit and found this: https://www.pcgamer.com/best-fishing-games/ which basically shows that a lot of games try to either go for excitement or for relaxation and it's hard to find a balance between those.

    The "boring" fishing experience

    How it'll probably be implemented

You get a fishing rod as a tool with the LT/RT options to throw out and reel in. Once the floaty thing goes under, you have to reel in. Fish you catch will be an item you hold in your hands which can be deposited in a crate or something and ticked off in the commendations screen somewhere.

What could be done to do it different

Although I have no issue with just a simple fishing mechanic, there are some ways to make it more interesting or give it a Sea of Thieves spin.

    Add Boss fights

One thing I remember from fishing in World of Warcraft is standing in a huge circle with 40 people from my guild, all fishing on a specific spot in a dungeon to fish up "The Lurker Below", a really big fish boss.

I can imagine that fishing from your ship would give you a possibility to fish up Megan, Karen or any other new aquatic creature. After fishing it up you'd have to kill it in a normal way in order to get rewarded.

    Make it a crew experience

Instead of making it just a solo thing, turn it into something to do with the entire crew. I'm not completely sure how this could be done, but I'm thinking about something like:

    • Teamwork makes it easier
Make reeling in the fish hard, while reeling it in the fish will surfuce so the crew can either grab/catch it or shoot at it to make it struggle less.

    • Reeling in the fish together
Make the "fishing rod" part of the ship, make reeling in similar as raising the anchor and have the crew attack the fish to capture it.

    • Multiple fishing rods attached to a single piece bait
Have each crewmember attach his/her fishing line the a single piece of bait, so you have more force to reel in the fish

    • Use a crewmember as bait
Trying to capture dangerous fish? They love living targets, so attach your line to one of the crewmembers and let them attract the fish.

    Personal barrels

If each person has a personal fishing barrel, you could organize fishing competitions with the crew to see who could capture the most fish in a certain time. Each member should be able to see the content of the personal barrels, although you can only put stuff in your own barrel. To make this interesting the fishing mechanic should be more skill than luck though.

    Fish are like chests/skulls/crates

It would be amazing to have fish in a similar way as chests or skulls, hoarding massive amounts of fish on a single ship would show a huge visible pile of fish. Not only would this look amazing, it would also give others the chance to steal fish.

    Capture fish alive

If fish are like the pigs/chickens/snakes you should be able to capture them alive and let them swim freely in the bottom of your slightly water filled ship.

    Alternative ways of fishing

    Spearfishing

If we could be given a speargun as weapon, it would add to the weapons arsenal and offer a more exciting and personal way of fishing. As a weapon it would have the ability to pin players to the floor for a short time.

As a fishing tool it would require you to actually dive and swim around to find fish. After a fish is found you'd have to shoot several spears in them to kill them. I can even imagine going on fishing expeditions with the crew like that, especially if you're hunting stronger fish.

The speargun should have a clear benefit for fishing, otherwise people would just use their guns instead. Maybe larger ammo capacity or it comes with a way for stay underwater longer.

    Fishing net

Similar to spearfishing, give players a net as a thrown weapon/tool. As a weapon it would trap pirates in place. As a tool it would capture fish. Unlike spearfishing a net would have to be retrieved, but has no ammo.

    Passive Netting

Hang a net behind your ship and scoop up all that fish from the sea, efficient and safe. Lowering and lifting the net would be done in a similar way as raising or angling the sail. After the net is full, take it from the water, kill any living fish or mermaid and sell that stuff the one willing to pay for it.

    Harpooning

Basically the same as the AC4 reference: Shooting or throwing harpoons from the safety of your ship or a rowboat. Being tagged along for the ride while you try and kill the fish with more harpoons or other weapons. Reeling the harpoon in like an anchor to get the closer to the fish.

    Simple Pirate fishing

Add more types of fish to the game similar to the sharks, let pirates "fish" for them with their normal weapons or even gunpowder barrels. The only change that has to happen is that kills are registered or can be retrieved.

    Fishing Rewards / Purpose

Apart from the usual resources (bananas, planks, cannonballs), empty cages, chests, crates and skulls, there should be something to make fishing worthwhile apart from just wanting a laid back experience.

    Commendation challenges

One of the obvious ones will probably be commendations for capturing certain fish or the total number of fish. Although I personally would like to have these in a way that would allow you to show these off to others.

    Merchant Alliance Reputation/Gold

If fish can be sold, they probably can be sold to the Merchant Alliance for reputation and gold.

    Ship decorations

I would love to be able to have locations where you could hang your prized fish. On certain spots on your ship you'd have spots where anyone in the crew could open a context menu where it allows you to select a fish from the collection of fish you've ever caught.

    New food source

Certain fish should be able to be stored and used in a similar way as bananas.

    Cosmetics

Apart from decorations for the ship it would be nice if capturing certain types of fish or collecting a certain amount of specific fish part could reward you with specific fishing cosmetics.

    Crafting

A nicer option of getting cosmetics or food would be if there's some sort of crafting system that lets you create the items yourself instead of just getting them as a reward for completing a certain commendation.

Well that's about everything I could think about now. I won't be adding or editing my post as I believe the editing bug hasn't been fixed so it would be useless to do so :)

Feel free to give feedback though :)

  • @pure-rare I'm all for people having fun any way they want to. Im just a bit perplexed that in a pirate game where so much pirate related stuff could be added, that fishing is in such demand.

You are of course free to ask for a feature in the game you want, and if so many people want it (and since it dosent break the theme or spirit of the game) rhen the devs should probably go ahead and add it. But be warned....in the 17th century carrabian fishermen often fell prey to pirates, and you will have no one to blame but yourselves if you loose your catch!

  • Sometimes ...Things don't have to be interesting....i have caught myself many of times just sailing to relax, enjoy that sweet music , watching the skies while my boat almost rocks me into a tranquility not even the best Reiki or other Far Eastern inspired music....This is a perfect game to escape from reality and just enjoy what you see and hear ...Fishing could be a bit like real fishing, set yerself on the shore throw that angle in the Sea and just sit down and relax, listening to tranquil ingame music while the sun decides to make itself ready for the dive in the Sea while colouring the sky like only the Primitives could....With Primitives i mean a branch in painting Art ....

  • @knifelife

So.. fishing. It has always been one of the most requested features. I think this is partly that we're faced with so much water, desert islands and a population that seems to survive on nothing but bananas.

Can fishing be entertaining and rewarding? What are we looking for from fishing?

I think that it isn't the act of fishing itself which will provide the incentive, although as a couple of people mentioned above, it could add a little productivity to those relaxing evenings watching the sunset from the shores of Sea Dogs Rest or some other far flung islet.

Personally I'd like the process itself to be varied, the number of games where you bait, cast your line, wait for the float to bob and then click and automatically haul in your catch are fairly mind numbing.... it always feels like it takes an eternity for so little reward.

So, for a lot of people there is a bit of relaxation and a feeling of peacefulness involved, a thrill when the line pulls and excitement to see what you've actually caught?

How could SoT do it differently?
Unless fishing is restricted to being an on board activity there are likely to be specific fishing spots - make them in interesting locations, have something happen while you're fishing - water movements, insect noises, splashes, birds flying by, a ripple on the water to indicate a missed opportunity perhaps?
What if we could fish from those nameless hunks of rock in the Seas?
Make use of areas of the game which are less frequented.
Will we be able to fish in pools and caverns like the pond on Crescent Isle or Kraken's Fall? What might we catch if we did so?
What if we could pay the shipwright to hire a small boat and head off into the open seas to fish? Would these be invulnerable to pvp or would you need to row off to some secluded cove?
Could we mass fish using gunpowder barrels, could we shoot fish, cannon them, kill them with a sword?

What sort of things will we catch and why? If we're always catching the same type of fish, the activity is going to get old very fast, so we need variety - variety between useful and useless items? Surprising and unexpected items?
What if you could fish up crates?
    Clothing items?
Odd messages in bottles or precious objects?
Scraps from lore books or crabs/lobsters/skeleton fish?
What if some of these items reacted in unexpected ways? This reminds me of the poor skeleton on Crescent Isle who's been attacked by fish!
Could we get pulled underwater by whatever it is we catch?
    Can we keep pet fish?
Could we hold the fish as an item and use it as a weapon?
    A tool?
A sacrifice to solve a riddle?
    As food for livestock?

If we catch fish then, what are they good for?
    Cooking?
    Trading?
    Crafting?
    Commendations and achievements?
    Fishing competitions?
How complex is it to craft the whole system of fishing and rewards?

I'm looking forward to seeing what Rare come up with for this..

  • @nunoazuldimeter From what I recall it was mentioned it will be a source of income, so in other words, more than "like playing our hurdy-gurdy".

  • @katttruewalker Woah! Some great ideas indeed!

Same for you @FishSt1ck i think between you and Katt together you could give Rare ideas for days to think over aha

I always like to have a chicken on the front of my Bowsprit as a good luck charm and mascot! Being that chicken isle is my favourite place in game (I honestly don’t know why). So if I could catch a baby Meg maybe? And have her as a pet cheering me on in my ship somewhere I would be very interested in taking up the pursuit of fishing xD

P.S RIP Carpernicas! You didn’t deserve to be hit in the face by that cannonball. Couldn’t of happened to a nicer chicken! :(

  • @sargent-sully let's see.. 😉

  • Just had some other thoughts :D

Electric eels that zap you... Exploding fish or puffer fish that swell up.... ghost fish that you can't get hold of, extra slippery fish that wriggle out of your hands.... clothing made of netting, or fish scales, fishtail shaped hats.... ok I'll stop now lol

  • I like the idea of obtaining faction levels of it's own ( still through merchant) and make a progression system out of it. I.E you start with a stick a string and rudimentary lure. The further you progress in your fishing faction you can upgrade your rod and lures to potentially catch larger/rare fish all the way up to catching sharks which could lead the whole crew to get involved in landing such a large beast; Ex: you hook up with a gigantic shark and your crew has to keep in pace with its ever changing direction so as to not snap the line.

Sharks could yield materials to fashion cool weapons (from the teeth)

  • @hailhypnotoad1 I would like to see someone try and reel in a Meg! That’s something I want to watch!

  • @knifelife haha that would be epic as well! especially if you could harpoon it and it just drags your boat around lol

Really Katt, do you honestly want to see the ol' admiral in fishnets?
Be careful of what you wish for. lol

@KnifeLife There you go mate, the answer to your thread title "How to make the addition of Fishing interesting."

    Hubba hubba. :p

  • @admiral-rrrsole Hmmmmm, maybe all this fishing marlakey isnt as bad as i thought, especially when you put it like that.....JOE WHERES MY FISHNETS!! xD

  • @knifelife lol
I didn't think anybody here had been at sea THAT long. lol
Although I could be mistaken. ;o)

  • @admiral-rrrsole Im feeling pretty disturbed right now, combining the two conversations we are having at the moment on this thread and the other i have unintentially built an image of your character in my head...

It consists of a Sea of thieves version of your profile picture who is incredibly drunk, really bad and loud at singing and who is also wearing fishnets...And whats more disturbing is i think im okay with that! Clearly i have been at Sea Wayyyyyy to long! ahahaha

  • @knifelife Absolutely PMSL
