Game constantly crashing but randomly

  • I made a thread about this and someone kindly sent me a link to where I go to submit a support request, the request is under the "solved" status despite me not getting anything other than a "thank you for submitting a request" so I figured i'd see if anybody else is having this issue and if there's a way to stop it.

Idk what's causing it but very randomly despite how well my game is running everything freezes, then after about 5 seconds the screen turns gray and the game closes down. This is annoying but all fine and dandy with friends who I can rejoin, but when i'm alone or with randoms and we have a ton of loot on our ship or we just dug up something valuable then suddenly it crashes and I miss out on everything it gets irritating. I've lost countless amounts of captains+ chest because of this issue. I tried turning down my graphics settings but still no luck.

I have nothing other than discord running and my ping is fine as well as my fps running over 100 easily. I won't mock the devs saying they don't pay attention because I know they read and are listening to us but this support so far has been very lowsy on their end

  • @simple-tora tickets marked as 'Solved' just mean they have been acknowledged and passed to the right people at Rare, not necessarily 'fixed'

  • I just spend 2 hours playing solo trying to do a skull fort. I defended my ship from wave after wave of papers. I got to the captian a gunpowder skelly blew us all up. Once the doors opened up on the ferry of the damned it wouldn't let me portal. It send me back to my select a ship screen, I'm so ticked off!!

  • @simple-tora
I've had since the week 2 update on the cursed sails that my game always chrashing within the first minutes of playing the first time of the day, but second start of the game and rejoining it's stable for entire day/evening even while tabbing in and out of the game. (on PC).

This however seemed to stop now at the latest server fix on wednesday so i might think it's been a server issue more then client for me.
I never reported it because it worked flawless from second start.

    Weird anyway.

  • While we would all want it there's no way can go back in time and uncrash your game.
What they can and will do is use the info you sent them to fix the game in upcoming patches. They'll analise the information you've sent maybe cross refference it with the server info on your session, see weather it was a serverside or clientside problem etc. They'll fix the server or the game code if they can and push it out for updates. Then the problem will be fixed, so yeah if it says ticket closed then you can assume they're fixing it.

  • @simple-tora

Has your issue been resolved? If not, can you please provide more details?

I assume you're playing on PC. What graphics card are you using? Do you have an SLI or Crossfire setup? What video driver version are you currently using?

  • I have the same problem, i can't even start the game anymore

  • Anyone know what the problem can be? (My laptop is fully updated and i never had problems before (i'm playing since Day 1))

  • @xpvtx Using GTX 1060 card, ethernet wired connection drivers are all up to date. Everything is up to date for me. I have been getting this issue ever since the cursed sails came out and no, it still hasn't been resolved. I haven't gotten a reply at all from the support team either

I had the same experience with a support issue. The ticket was set to "solved", even though it wasn't, and I never heard from anyone. The support ticket metrics are reviewed by management on a daily or weekly basis I'm sure. They can't have a lot of open or aging tickets or they'll get in trouble for it.

Can you please try turning your Shader Cache off in the NVIDIA Control Panel, then update your in-game settings for shadows AND lighting to "Cursed"? I know it sucks because you have a good modern graphics card but let's start with assuming the SoT Software is causing your video driver to crash. If it runs stable we can bump up the settings starting with the shadows and go from there.

Also, before you start playing, bring up your Windows Events Viewer. Type in "Events" into the Search or Cortana bar. Then click the "Events Viewer" app. Click on Windows Logs and then Applications once inside the Events Viewer program. Play until the game crashes. Once it does, refresh the page by pressing the "F5" Key while in the Events Viewer application. You'll see a red circle with a white exclamation point inside of it with the word "Error" next to it. Click on that then go down down to the information bar at the bottom of the window. Copy and Paste the text contained in the "General" tab.

  • I hear a lot of in-game PC crashes too on discord chat. The more tickets that are submitted, the higher it climbs in priority for repair. Rare is very big on metric analysis.

I hope you all get it resolved quickly! Follow up with xPVTx, I'm sure your responses can help others in the same predicament 😀

I'm not a pc gamer, hopefully xPVTx or another can get you on the right path in here or a separate thread! If it were me, I'd search for the error message, or just uninstall/reinstall ( which I think a bunch were doing after one of the updates?)

  • Yes, this is a severe issue.
SoT is poorly optimized, after loading a few times or simply afking on the main menu my game becomes really stuttery, as if it has some sort of memory leak.

It's really bad, approaching Plunder outpost and Ancient spire makes it worse, it stutters really hard, and eventually the game just crashes after a while.

So yeah, i do belive SoT has some sort of memory leak.

    Specs -
    i7 2600k
8GB of ram (100% sure this is the issue)
    GTX 1070ti

I uninstall and reinstall every patch day.

  • @vulgrim1911

Nice rig man. I haven't experienced a memory leak thankfully. What Texture Detail settings are you using? Do you have the game loaded on a Solid State Drive or a standard Hard Drive? What is your memory usage just before the game crashes? What about your graphics card memory usage?

  • It took multiple support tickets before I got a helpful response. I was told to:

    1. Make sure NAT type is OPEN
    2. Uninstall/reinstall
    3. Run diagnostics & report back to them.
  • I'm starting to think the crashes are based on what server u connect too. I have had days where I'll play on a server all day with no crashes. Then I get on another server and crash over and over again.

What error are you receiving? What setup are you using? Need more details.

  • @treefittymonsta I had read in another thread that the frequency of crashes seems to be greater among solo players. That's not to say it doesn't happen on a fully crewed ship, though.

Honestly, I can't recall crashing like this prior to these last few events. Shortly after the game released I pulled an all-nighter, and played for almost 24 hours - no crashes or beard errors. There were more lag-warping issues in the game, but at least it was mostly-stable.

I'm tired of crashing. I had 6 golden chickens stashed on a nearby outpost, as I went sailing my sloop to join the Fleet/Alliance battling the Skele Ships. As soon as I got into the fight, the skele ship pops up, then barely a moment later my game crashes. I was fully stocked, playing with a fun alliance, solo on my sloop. My experience was ruined. Again :(

I ran the diagnostics that the support people requested, and submitted it. But it's not easy to find the desire to set-sail, knowing the game could crash at the worst-possible time..... again.

  • @wodyo
For whatever it is worth I can verify that. I am a big time soloer...or was. I play friday nights with my friend and soloed the rest and for some odd reason I can go a good 5-7 hours with him and be fine and if I solo I crash after one voyage....

One of the many reasons I have cut my SoT time down.
