Idea: The Vanishing Island

  • Ok So I just thought of this idea, so it is not fully fleshed out, in terms of details and how it is supose to work but I think it would be a cool idea to considder for the future of the game.

    The idea comes from old sea legends of islands vanishing, either cause the sunk like The Lost city of Atlantis, or the island that was the back of a giant sea turtle. The last one is one I think Rare could do an event around. Say the turtle roams around the map and then comes to the surface for limited time periods. The turles shell would have like ancient ruins on top of it with lore stuff. Loot and or special types of skeletons that spawn on just that island. The after the limited time periode the turtle would sink back under the ocean and then some time would pass and it would appeare at another location on the map.
    Personally I would have loved if this was an event, it has pontential both for combat exploration and it would shake up the map struckture from time to time. as for the size of the island/turtle shell, there could also be variables in that. but for the sake of coding it would be safest to have the island at one size. but this is just my theory around the idea of an island appearing and dissapearing around the map. if anyone has any input or just love the idea comment so maybe Rare wil see this post.

  • The ruins could be like a dungeon/maze, you go through all of it and you fight the final boss which is like a giant skeleton.

  • Someone else had this idea as well...it is very interesting. I do think the mechanic that hides the island should already be in game. For instance:
    Someone acquired a message in a bottle; which activates an island to appear in a storm...you do not know which one. Once you find it, the storm no longer moves. When you leave the storm's range, the island disappears.

    I'd love a dense fog, but we haven't seen that yet. I'm excited for forsaken shores, the new environment changes are beyond intriguing to me.

  • @violentandroid the thought of activating the island just by a message in a bottle is a little anti climatic, it should be something grand, like take the eagle statue that is on either devil's ridge or plunder valley, never remember which and you cycle through the songs on your instrument and for some unknown reason you play a tune that makes the island appeare somewhere on the map, compleatly visible for everyone to see, then it is a race to find it. The island would not appeare at the same location all the time, and should not be fixed locations, like with where the crews and meg appeared, that would in my mind make the hunt alot more exciting.

  • @kayzenhyuga if rare decides to put a underwater area which i believe is rumoured after foresaken shores, the island should take on a new form, a graveyard for sunken ships maybe or loot that has despawned? it could be the scrap yard of the game but infested with sharks and other nasty creatures so you dont get p***y players, but its also constantly moving maybe like an underwater ship. this would also stop the idea of a player staying on the island and waiting for players or stopping it despawning, the turtle gets up, and swims down potentially drowning the player?

    and maybe during the day its a paradise, but at night a hell hole. and add the a "chest of the nocturne" it goes up in value depending or the time of day but can poison the player every 30 seconds at night when the player is holding it? worth 3000 gold at 12 at night but incredibly dangerous or 700 at 12 at day.

    what do you think? maybe fix the combat first making sharks blockable and killable with a sword.

  • @sillyninja65 the old myth says the island comes up from the sea, and I think it could be difficult for rare to maybe code the island and turtle to roam like the meg does, due to it's size. The Idea of the island sinking with player stil on the island I think could work perfectly. an idea could also that the island could spawn under water and then raise to the surface, for players who are on top of the island their boat get's a bunch of holes and slides of the island, and when it sinks it sinks to a certain depths before it despawns

    btw sharks can be killed with sword you just need to hit them enought.

    The idea of a special chest that can be found only on this island and that has diffrent value depending on when you deliver it I really like, if the players who find the chest finds it during the day they could just deliver right away or keep it safe until the night, which raises the risk for it getting taken.
