Cursed Sails, what is this mess ?

  • Hi.

Yesterday night, I was very excited about this new DLC.
I started with a friends and 1st deception, no one with us for the skeleton ships.
We wait and still no one. We tried but it's so hard for a sloop.

Tonight, I tried again with a galion this time and we found a brigantine with us. We tried and 3 boats appears. We sink them many time but they always came back.

We decided to get into their boat and check loots. Only 1 chest and a bad one. Seriously ? All this for one chest ?

Finally we left because we were bored.

    So, to resume :

    • where are players ? I expected more players to do the events but it seems really hard to find help.
    • why the respawn time is so small ? If we sink a ship, we don't have time to get loots
    • why sink theses ships for bad rewards ?

  • The reward isn’t bad if you complete the battle, it’s at least 4 stronghold chests and stronghold skulls!

  • Its hard to figure out because the in-game npc dialogue doesn't really explain anything. But here's a summary for the event:

    1. as you'll see on the outpost you arrive at on joining a session, there's ships that spawn in certain areas of the maps during certain in-game days. Check your pocketwatch to see when the fleets will spawn. Also, look at the banner to see what kind of skellies you'll fight, it'll show a picture of plant, shadow, or plain bone. Can't confirm but I haven't seen gold yet (thankfully)
    2. stock up on supplies and try to build a good alliance. Was do-able with 3 fully-manned brigatines, but more would be preferable. Head out to the specified area during the days instructed and ships will start to spawn. The banners are a little misleading because you're not fighting one ship, you'll fight a fleet of about 8 ships. The ships have loot on them, which you can either recover before sinking or after, depending on your preferred combat style. I have noticed the loot increases in value as you sink more ships, the last few ships give the equivalent of Fort chests and skulls, and our fleet got 4 or 5 each time. Would recommend dedicating a few in your alliance to boarding, as the skellies can repair their ships. Also, check the name of the main boat you're supposed to fight, it will give you a clue as to what kind of cursed cannonballs the skellies will be lobbing your way. Ex: the cursed helm (or similar) launched cursed cannonballs that caused the ship to become unsteerable for some time. Hope this helps, best bet to find other players hunting the ships would be to go to golden sands outpost, that's where the story part tells you to go so if you have other players in your lobby looking for ships they might be starting there. Good luck, and if you see my sloop out there we'll join up
  • If u kill the captain wave u get about 4-6 stronghold chests, and 4-6 stronghold skulls... so what do u mean bad rewards?

  • Right now skeleton ships are spawning with no skellies. Get in there and get your loots.

  • It sounds like you didn’t get all the way through the battle before you left. It’s just like a skull fort raid. The ships come in waves. First 2 waves are usually single ships. 3rd wave is 2 ships, 4th wave is 3 ships, and once you’ve sunk them all the 5th wave appears with one final boss ship with a skeleton captain on it. 8 ships total. Once you kill that captain or sink the ship the battle is over. Most of the ships will have a few bits of mediocre loot, but the boss ship has a ton of very valuable loot. We tried in a single 4 man galleon for a few hours but were only to get through about 6 ships before we got sunk and gave up because it was already 2am. We will try again tonight, and try to find another ship or two to help us.

Before you sail to where they spawn, make sure all ships involved have as many cannonballs/planks/bananas as physically possible. We went in with 175 cannonballs and we ran out a few times and had to disengage to make quick supply runs.

It’s worth noting that the skeletons can repair holes, but they can’t bail out water. So send someone down to their bottom deck to help slow down repairs, or to drop off a GP barrel to make a lot of holes but also kill would be repairing skeletons. They respawn quickly though so keep the cannonfire up as well.

This not à bad reward ans i alway find people on events !

  • thanks for yours answers all.

I didn't know it was a kind of "waves". We sunk many ships and every time, bad chest. After 5 ship sunk, we left.

Now, I know, we must sink 7 ships before seing the boss and get real rewards.

But, I confirm, I'm very surprised to see so few people on this game now. I really thought with this DLC, we will find easily many crew to help us (like the first days with Merrick quests).

  • @flippin-loud With this, many of the captain ships I sunk had maurader's at most...

  • @cheatingpirate you mean the ship with a skeleton having a red name over it aka Captain ship. Not the normal skelly ones?

  • The skelley ship re-spawn time is an issue, don't have any time to collect loot, but it is to test your ship skills (repair, restock, position, organised team etc) in battle I think.

  • @febou there isnt enough people per server these days

  • @becausescience1

There should be always enough people per server because of the system which Rare uses that merges us onto servers to maintain a decent population automatically, sometimes you'll see a riddle message appear on the screen.

If this isn't happening then something is going wrong - perhaps those who have completed the current skellie battle are off doing voyages elsewhere on the map.

@febou there isnt enough people per server these days

Like @KattTruewalker said, that shouldn't be the case. It's designed to automatically populate servers and merge servers if there is a lower population.

That said, there's been a massive influx of players during the launch of this update. So I highly doubt the lack of players is the problem here. It's most likely just crews doing something else on the other side of the map!

  • @murkrage or the same ship being used on too many servers creating some sort of balance issue, ie why you don’t see 6 galleons on one server.

  • @becausescience1 because it s sommer

There are plenty of people playing simply because it’s summer. That said, summer doesn’t mean free time. There are plenty of people with jobs and last I checked, most jobs don’t stop during summer :)

But maybe people prefere make something else and it s warm. I m Italian and in Europe August means vacation

  • @katttruewalker
Idk how well that system works, the past couple times I played with my crew 5-6 hours at a time We never saw anyone on the seas. Wasn’t until we went sever hopping looking for people we were actually able to find some.

  • I haven't seen a single captain skull or ship chest turned in despite being in an alliance through 5 succesful battles! Those lying pirates have been taking them behind my back, leaving the alliance, and turning them in!? Well, come next battle, I'll sit back, let them do all of the work, and then strike 1st while their supplies are depleted! Mwahaha!!! 😈

    Honesty is overrated... 😏

  • @galactic-geek it does not depends, i had ship with PLs in my allience, they simply returned to outpost and sold stuff, and wholamola I got nothing. I dont know If I missunderstand allience or it was bug but it doesnt work.

I’m also in Europe and where I’m from August means: work. I’m going to assume you are still in school, perfectly fine, I am still graduating my college degree but I still work through the summer.

You can’t cater everyone. It’s suicid for the game to go: Hey, it’s summer. Kids are out on vacation, so we aren’t going to do anything for you folks that are still at home and want to play the game!

  • I wanted the commendation for a battle in a sloop, so I just stocked up my own and left for the battle zone at Marauders Arch as a solo pirate. I was able to join an alliance with two brigs and a galleon.
An epic battle raged, I was nearly sunk a few times but a PL boarded my boat and provided critical assistance until my crewmate joined the fight. We managed to stay afloat, even twice boarding enemy ships and stealing villianous skulls from the captains quarters, bailing out the balcony and returning to our sloop. We retreated to an outpost to restock and cash in our stolen loot. We returned in time to hear the music indicating the Boss is in the fight. We were lucky to be close to the enemy captains ship when it sunk, so me and my mate looted what we could. Four stronghold chest, two stronghold skulls, a captains chest, some cargo and a villianous skull.
We cashed it all in at the outpost where the rest of the flotilla caught up to us and thanked us for not leaving the alliance.
Would have been a d**k move considering they all took the brunt of the damage, and did all that dancing.
I still had the same sloop I started with, but now it has the new bilge-rat livery with the kracken skull on the bow.

  • @murkrage I m 38 old. August is warm, sun shines...maybe people, in free time, go out and dont play videogames... autumn was better

  • @katttruewalker
Is that what the riddle message is?

  • The reward is pretty meager for the time it takes to complete. It’s about 9k worth of these not so valuable Skeleton chests and skulls(1.4 for each one on average). That’s if you don’t split it with an alliance. If you split it it is like 6k. The loot on the other ships is mostly trash. Just a handful of tier three items(marauder’s chests, hateful skulls) and even more tier 1 and 2. Occasionally you can get a few spices and villainous skulls but that’s on a good day. You do it for the commendation and doubloons. I really wish it was more rewarding. The event is really fun and I’d like to receive a nice little reward so I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time.

  • Hi

I finished my first battle yesterday but seriously, second time we have a megalodon in the same time. Skeleton ships + megalodon, it's very hard. I don't know if it's a bug or not but they really should remove megalodon on theses areas.

Well, loots are goods, it took us time and we only found 1 slop to help us. We go to a brigantine but no answer (text or vocal). Well, I have always difficulties to find people.

At the end, after collecting loots, we go to the outpost and what happens ? event reboot and ships appears again. I hope it's a bug because after this 1st battle, we used all our planks and 200 cannons balls.

  • @febou +1 to this. I got megalodon + event + storm. It was epic, but it really made me swear in my mind.

I actually forgot how was the sea without the megalodon. I love it but it seriously spawns a little too much for my tastes, and almost every time when in the event. I understand it probably spawns when more ships are together and I agree with the idea, but most of the time i'm sailing alone in a sloop and I see it running around.

Oh and no, it's not a bug. the event resets in like 5 minutes, I think. I hope it stays this way, otherwise there are less chances to do it.

  • @febou said in Cursed Sails, what is this mess ?:

    So, to resume :

    • where are players ? I expected more players to do the events but it seems really hard to find help.

Most players will have done the event by the end of the week. This was true for the Megladon as well, this is why rare has included some nifty loot (later on this one) and new crews weekly.

    • why the respawn time is so small ? If we sink a ship, we don't have time to get loots

There are 5 waves of ships (1 to 2 ships) the fifth wave spawns with a skeleton captain (lord?) that has....

    • why sink theses ships for bad rewards ?

Loot! The fifth wave has a captain, he spawns on the loot ship. When you sink it and it despawns it drops 4 Skeleton Captains chests and skulls (same as fort skulls and chests). For an event that's easy to farm this is a lot of loot! Just be patient keep an eye out for the fifth wave (audible with the music) and make sure to stick with the captains ship, when it sinks stop your boat next to the wreck to pick up the loot. Otherwise the skulls will glow a lot so you'll be able to track the loot somewhat easily.

    Have fun sailing!
