Pig health

  • Pigs should have a lot more health then they do when in cages, me and my crew keep catching and feeding the pigs for merchant quest and they keep dying in about 2 minutes of being left alone without feeding.

  • @badmuthaducker When you're feeding them, check that they've actually taken the banana out of your inventory. I find that you have to have both the 'feed pig' and 'pick up pig' tool-tips showing for it to work properly. If there's just the 'feed pig' tool-tip showing then it runs the animation, but doesn't actually take the banana.

  • @ever-reddy yeah definitely does, we hold out my banana and the animation plays of the pig eating it, so definitely doing that right, but thank you anyway.

  • @badmuthaducker Yeah, but the animation can still play without the banana actually being removed. Make sure you check how many bananas you're carrying before you feed them, then check again afterwards to make sure it's dropped by 1.

  • Also, is there any way to feed chickens to stop them dying?

  • @eep42 No, you don't need to feed chickens or snakes. If they're dying it's either because they've taken damage or have drowned.

It's worth noting that snakes spit venom at anything within range, including other animals (though not each other), so make sure you keep them well away from other livestock.

  • Pigs shouldn’t have to be fed. Being the same value as other animals of the same type and needing constant attention makes them worthless. They tear through your bananas.

Lol those F**king snakes the first time I tured in a snake basket and got less that 100 gold and I'm just "well that wasn't worth all that effort!"

  • 7 minutes around till feedline

Hardly worthless, but I do think that the extra effort should be rewarded with a bit extra gold.

  • @ever-reddy
I’m exaggerating... Yes, they should be worth more for the effort.

  • Pigs dying when not fed is odd and inconsistent with the other animals, and feels like annoying maintenance. All my friends refuse to accept the voyages with pigs. They discourage trying fun stuff, because you're always worried about going back to the boat and feeding them, and the resource cost is significant. I wouldn't mind if they squealed louder and louder to the point where it's almost unbearable (or even pooped on the deck, ha!), but having to constantly worry about them dying is just not fun imo. Every other treasure type that has a 'cost' (snakes, chest of sorrow) is fun because the mechanics are more elegant and require a bit of skill: charm the snake and avoid damage (no resource cost), bail water and avoid sinking (no resource cost). Pigs are just a flat banana cost, and the only treasure type that can die.

  • I haven't got an issue with feeding pigs but I do find its rather frequent even for a pig and the time, effort and resources is not worth the measly gold you get for them. I can dig up a seafarers chest which are quite common, don't die or need to be fed and I can get more gold for them.

  • Feeding a pig multiple bananas does not seem to extend the period of time till it is hungry again
Only one banana is enough to put it back to full
The pig only needs to be fed when it is sitting down inside of it's cage and whining
It will only remove a banana from your inventory to feed the pig when you can see the "feed" and "pick up" options at the same time
At level 50 I'm pretty sure I've never lost more than ten pigs ever. (I can only remember three instances)
Try feeding it right before jumping off the boat so you have the maximum amount of time and if you feel like you're taking too long head back, check on it, give it another to refill the meter if you feel like you'll be gone longer
Maybe leave someone behind to watch it, this will also have the added benefit of someone watching for incoming ships
Side note - a weird glitch I've noticed is that if you have a lot of pigs together on the boat, one of them may get hungry instead of another. Meaning one specific pig will start starving more often, sometimes two to three times in a row, while one or two never get hungry at all

  • Use your pocket watch. Somewhere between 7-8 in-game hours till next feeding.

  • @uhndeth I noticed that also. I had a group of pigs once and this one pink and black spotted one was hungry all the time.. almost 2x as fast as all the other pigs in the group, including the other spoted pig.
