Vote to elect a "captain" or a "voyage manager"

  • Pretty simple request.

I play with the same group of IRL friends pretty frequently and I'm our "captain". I steer the ship, decide what voyages we go on etc etc. Basically we find it kind of a chore to have to gather everyone to vote on the voyages over and over to cycle through bad ones. It would be incredibly convenient if there was an option (in the "My Crew" menu) to vote someone as the voyage manager so we don't need to gather around every time. Since voting would be required to establish who has the "captain" position, this would still prevent anyone from joining a random crew griefing them by canceling their voyage.

I use the term "captain" here but I really just am referring to someone who manages the voyages is all. Please let me know any loopholes or shortcomings this idea may have, it's very likely I overlooked something since I am thinking about this in the scope of my irl friends who I know won't do anything too naughty ;)

    Thanks!

  • That would go against article 4 of the pirate code:

Hmm, in some ways yes it would as not all pirates would be equal but also it would require a vote to establish in it. This is really just aimed at convenience so I don't have to drag my friends into the captains quarters every time we want to start a voyage. :-P

Thanks for pointing that out though! :)

  • Real life pirates elected their captains. Pirate companies were very much democratic bodies. Captains did not decide upon a ship's destination. Rather, voyages were determined by vote (just like in the game). During battles or chases, the captain had full command and was to be obeyed. The rest of the time, almost all decisions were made democratically. Pirates did indeed have pirate codes or contracts that they all signed. Loot was distributed evenly among the crew, with the captain and officers receiving extra shares for their added responsibilities. Anyone caught pilfering extra loot was subject to severe punishment.

The quartermaster was second in rank to the captain, also elected by the crew. The quartermaster had the power to veto the captain's decisions (except during combat or pursuit). The quartermaster was in charge of ship discipline, and also led the boarding party during battle.

Just a little more info for your pirating pleasure. :)

  • I always sail with my Reallife Brother (Illumipirat) - and i always declare him the Captain more or less.

Comes from me not really being motivated staying behind the Ships Wheel and so on. ;-) When this Guy is not [ Mod Edit - No swearing ] me off so much right now that i want to blow him up with a Gunpowder Barrel, we are a nice Team. ;-)

  • Good idea @jeometry.
Regardless of cancelling bad or unworthy quests, it's a bit of a pain to propose a voyage whilst your crew is scurrying for supplies then wait for the majority of them to return to cast their vote, especially whilst doing a merchants or Athena's where you need to collect animal cages or baskets.

Elect the captain and give him or her the power to decide on voyages. As players and friends we still have a voice which will be more often heard with a regular crew.
A good crew will ask and collaborate on who needs which faction to level up. If your elected captain turns out not to be a team player then simply re-elect a new captain.

  • Thanks for the info, @genuine-heather.
It never hurts to know a little true-life history behind any game we play. :o)
