Sail glitch?? Or cheating??

  • A friend and I were on a sloop the other day when another sloop came out of nowhere and started chasing us, nothing special there, this isn't the first time. However, we could not shake this sloop. We killed both of them or had them off the boat and made an escape at least 3 or 4 times. But they ALWAYS caught up, a lot faster than I have ever experienced.

At one point, we were about 3 map blocks away from them after a successful escape (unfortunately we couldn't get enough holes in their boat to sink it), we had the wind at our back, full sail, but they still caught us. It didn't seem to matter what we did, catch wind, against wind, around rocks... they were right there.

I guess you could chalk it up to "they were better than us," but after killing them multiple times, escaping, and not being new to game since we've both been playing since launch, something seemed off.

Eventually, we get a bit tired of it and move to engage them, cannon on cannon and they finally sink us because we were tired and frustrated, not communicating well... and my mate says that when he was in the water the last time before going to the ferry, he heard them say, "Do you think they'll report us for cheating?"
To which he responded, "I already did!"
They replied, "Everyone is doing it, the sail thing is all over the forums!"

Now, I've been searching these forums all day and I can't find anything about a, "sail glitch" or anything about sailing in the game that I don't already know. So, were these jerks actually cheating?? Or is there some kind of sloop speed glitch/sailing secret I haven't heard of???

  • @porkchopbacon never heard of it personally, but make sure to send in a ticket here if you haven't already (it can take a while to load properly): https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

select the correct category from the drop-down menu and add as much info and detail as possible including Gamertags, time etc. if you have screenshots/captures be sure to include them too.

  • @triheadedmonkey It was a few nights ago and I didn't get any video or screenshots. I'll try to see if I can find their gamertags. Thanks.

  • @porkchopbacon Yes, this has happened to me last week and like you I've been around the map a few times so I know about the blah, blah, blah, you got out sailed or because of ya whatever. I even took into consideration the other chasing sloop had a thousand gunpowder barrels to make it a nitro funny car.
But as you say I boarded it by jumping overboard and running around their ship while they were waiting for the door to open on the ferry..............
Yep, no gun powder and a nice merman takes me back to my sloop and sure enough they catch me again....So?

  • @porkchopbacon Oh, and I never mentioned it on the boards because you always get the..... Oh sure you just got out sailed, get gud, they were not cheating because blah, blah, blah.

  • It happened once to us.

We were being chased by a galleon, we also were a galleon. Sails at max with the wind, they crashed 5 times, 5!!! against islands. And still the catched up.

I repeat sails at max, max speed. Impossible to go faster, but they did.

  • There is a known glitch where the sloop will have max speed regardless of wind direction. I won't go into how to recreate the glitch. Buuuuut, if you manage to board them and move their sail. It stops the glitch.

  • I always try's to ride the waves, so I'm more or less turning the wheel all the time.
Even though It look like I'm going straight, That help me when Im hunting or getting hunted.

Using the same trick on skeleton fort, where you strew up they aim, by over-steering.

  • @guepard4

Is the whole map on the same wind direction and the same time?

Is full sail the same speed at all sail angles or is the ship faster the more the wind is behind you?

  • Rare needs to spin up a 5th team that just focuses on fixing game breaking glitches like the cannon glitch, the mermaid item glitch, the sloops sails glitch, the double shot glitch, scuttle near fort glitch. It's getting out of hand.

And those are just the ones everyone knows I bet there are a ton more that are less known.

Wind was just in our back. So doesn't matter how the wind were in their part. Impossible to be faster than us.

  • A few weeks ago i overheard a few randoms talking about this....It's a sloop glitch and when you can trigger it then you always have full speed nomatter from where the wind blows....According to them, this glitch is already there from the Alpha's and is still not repaired...Don't ask me how to trigger it because i didn't listen to that part...i rather play the game like it was suppossed to be...i don't cheat since it lowers other people's fun and mine too because all results coming from cheating don't feel like real results to me...

  • Can confirm there is a sail glitch that only applies to the sloop. Tried it myself before my buddy reported it to verify it works. If you can board your questionable opponent just mess with the angle on their sail by rotating it then dropping their anchor.

    God speed!

Because those stories all include a bare-bones description of the situation with no video proof, leaving the reader to fill in the gaps of what actually happened.

Combine that with the average internet user's tendency towards hyperbole, and suddenly not a single word of what you say becomes believable. ("You" as in the one telling the story, not "you" as in you personally.)

Now combine THAT with the overwhelming ratio of "boo-hoo" threads vs justifiable complaints.

Is it any wonder why we never believe the stories?

  • I a random crew mate told me about the sails glitch. It was the first time I heard it. He said when going against the wind turn sails flat to the wind and you go faster. Sound like BS to me. He swore by it. Intuitively when you have a head wind you turn the sails full left or right parallel to the wind.
