SoT Reddit vs SoT Forums

  • Which one do the devs look at/respond to more? Haven’t seen a dev comment on the forums in a long time. They usually leave that to the mods. As for Reddit I see them comment frequently.

  • @personalc0ffee I disagree that it should be ignored, but I do believe that the forums should have more developer presence.

However, much like reddit, I am sure they are lurking at all times; waiting in the shadows to strike unexpectedly.

  • Here’s another of Rare Senior Producer on the fishing topic. Don’t get me wrong...its very awesome to see them communicating somewhere and hearing the community. But, I just never see them do that on here. I dont know if they have or not but I’ve never witnessed it myself. Just wondering if they prefer Reddit to the forums.

  • @hazerblade Reddit isn't worth the server and bandwidth it takes up.

to find Reddit on a map, you would need to tunnel to the 'backside' of the internet, insult a few mothers, claim complete nonsense as Gospel and then threaten anyone who disagreed with your 'truth' with keyboard warrior violence....only then would you truly find it....and likely want to promptly return to the real world.

  • @triheadedmonkey idk bout all that. It wasn’t a “forums better than reddit” thread or anything like that. Just the question of what the devs read/comment/spend more time on.

I believe a lot of devs have opted to just use reddit more often. Reason you wont see them respond on here.

On reddit getting a response like that from a senior producer is really great because it assures you that they are taking in your ideas. This forum never see’s that. Now I’m not saying they arent looking but seeing next to no comment here from them and then seeing it on reddit makes me feel like they maybe read reddit a bit more.

  • @ximp0sterx the forums are better than Reddit though....Twitter is better than Reddit....being blinded by a rampant unicorn with a blow torch is better than Reddit....

that being said, I'm sure the dev's read and take in all feedback from all sources, but if you want to really get your suggestions read then a support ticket is the best way to go. https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

you may not get a personal reply and the ticket might be marked as 'solved' but that just means it has been successfully passed on to the relevant team.

Reddit on the other hand....means you have made the choice that hunches and rumour are enough....

  • Could it possibly just maybe be that ever since this game launched, this forum has had nothing but people responding negatively to new content or people bringing up the same topics everyday without fault.
I'm not here to start anything or have a go at anyone but if Devs are responding on a more frequent basis to Reddit posts over the official forums, is the problem here Reddit or the Forums.

  • @guru-tuginmapud if Reddit is ever the acceptable answer, it's not a world I want to live in

  • @triheadedmonkey True, i mean this is the official forum on the official website. So i get why people wonder where that connection with the devs has gone.

    My thoughts exactly.

Ideally, the devs would respond on the official forums more often, but the general negativity of these forums compared to the sub-reddit is night and day. Imagine the reaction of the forums if the dev posted simple emojis in a feedback thread. People would lose it and complain that the devs are taking the time to post without posting anything substantial.

With that said, the kind of responses that were posted are just about the only thing reddit gets from the devs.

We know that the devs watch these forums....because these are the official forums. The pop ins on the sub-reddit just remind the players that the devs are listening there too.

  • It's not really Rare as a whole, it's just Sonic Bob. Joe and other members are also active on Twitter with the community. They reach vastly more people between Reddit and Twitter then they would just here. And they're probably often doing it on personal time.

But, they made a dedicated feedback page here for a reason, and I'm sure a lot of the stuff gets read here as well by the dev team.

  • @dekeita said in SoT Reddit vs SoT Forums:

Precisely this, and the Feedback and Suggestions category on the forums is the only place that Rare can/does look for suggestions on what people would like to see due to the legal disclaimer pinned to that category. It's not that they don't pay attention to other sources such as Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Discord, and Instagram, nor is it that they're ignoring everyone here, but it's just that being the official forums, responses must also be more official as @Doomed-Panda stated. Rare has to be extremely cautious about what they say in official places as what they do say will be taken as 'law' so to speak. I can tell you that Rare is always watching the forums day-in and day-out, even though they may not constantly comment, they are always watching!

  • I do wish we’d see them reply here more often but it’s snice to see them on the subreddit, which is still a popular place for SoT’s discussion and has a healthy community.

I’m more of a lurker on reddit as opposed to here but I often find myself scrolling through more of the comments over there, just because there’s likely to be a reply from one of the dev team.

  • Well, I am here to say the difference between reddit and these forums during the launch backlash was not night and day lol. It was a nightmare just trying to find anyone talking nice about the game on either site. Constant negative bashing threads in both places.

If people bring up the same topics, it means the issue is still there and needs resolving. Avoiding it is the worst thing a dev can do.

  • (Mod Edited)

Where are you getting this from? Some of the more controversial topics are still going strong with both sides just going at it, but in a respectful way. As long as you are respectful and keep to the code, your topics won't be closed.

If you start a topic for the sole reason to cause a disturbance, yeah your topic will be closed. If you've been around on the internet long enough, you'll know what topics are there just to troll. Trolls are all the same, everywhere.

I think I'll switch to reddit. On official forums it's worse than n**i occupation. Try to say something negative and topic get's closed pretty fast+ban threat.

Topics often get closed based on replies, even when the OP is a very well written constructive criticism. That's the problem. Doesn't happen on reddit.

  • @captain-surgee But then the topic isn't closed because it's saying something negative, as you have previously stated, but because the participants aren't keeping to the code. If a topic derails it will be locked, all in accordance to the code.

There's lots of people here that will steer discussion in the right direction if they do derail, but if that doesn't help then yeah it will be locked. This has nothing to do with Rare closing your topic because of your OP, though.

You're right, it doesn't happen on Reddit. But a discussion on Reddit isn't linear, like it is on a forum. A discussion on Reddit usually goes a lot of ways depending on who's comment is the one people reply to.

Best thing you can do is to ignore the 'white knights', as you call them, and try to steer the topic back to what it's about.

  • @captain-surgee

While it always sucks when a topic gets closed because others won't play nice, that just happens sometimes. I've seen just as many happy, 'positive' threads get closed for arguments in the replies as critical ones.

  • @personalc0ffee said in SoT Reddit vs SoT Forums:

This is where the official developer replies and updates should be, not on Reddit.

That sub reddit is unofficial and should be promptly ignored.

Rare is apparently trying to make Reddit an official platform, and the mods are working with them to make that happen. This was revealed when the THD leaks were coming out, and they were removing all traces of them from the sub. It sparked a bit of controversy that people already forgot about, due to official employees pressuring the sub to conform to specific rules. It's pretty dumb for a variety of reasons, but it's also pretty likely Reddit sees a lot more traffic than this forum does, so I suppose it makes sense.

  • @drunkpunk138 it isn't dumb for a company to protect their property, no matter where it is leaked.

  • @triheadedmonkey said in SoT Reddit vs SoT Forums:

@drunkpunk138 it isn't dumb for a company to protect their property, no matter where it is leaked.

What is dumb is a platform that has guidelines to maintain autonomy from official members of an organization bending to try and get perks and treats from said official members of that organization by ignoring those guidelines. The topic of leaks is a matter of opinion: once that info is out, it's out, and in my opinion it is dumb to try and stifle that discussion in a place that is supposed to be free of that sort of control. But that isn't the only thing I was referring to as dumb. The use of the platform instead of their own is also equally dumb.

  • @drunkpunk138 torrent sites aren't run by the movie/music companies, doesn't mean they have the right to publish things 'because they are out there' already.

The companies DO have every right to request stuff to be removed that hasn't been officially released.

A few people lacking morals and in need of an ego stroke, collectively deciding there are no rules, doesn't make them exempt.

  • @DrunkPunk138 Rare will not be making the Reddit an official community platform. To define what officially supported means is that it is owned and run directly by Rare, and this will not be happening as Rare will not be taking over the subreddit. They do plan on supporting the community mods there with answering questions they have about what is already in game and what is announced, but they wont have any 'extra' knowledge outside of what is public to everyone. The reason for all this is exactly as you mentioned in your last post, THD, reddit (the company not the subreddit) has very specific rules that developers cannot get involved in certain things without being banned altogether, so they are choosing not to get involved at all.

I am happy to see that the mods there will have a little more support, however they wont be becoming an official community space at this time.

So If this is the case how come they told the reddit that the new legend ship is going to be locked behind both 50 50 50 AND Athena.

When the only public knowledge we had before this post was "Go Ghost: Prefer your undead to be even less alive? Pirates with Legendary status can decorate their ships with ghost livery, including a bone-chilling figurehead and sails."

So really they just announced extra knowledge about the legend ship that wasn't known before they made that post on reddit. Seems a bit strange that they post on reddit so often and never on here.

    Hey guys,

I haven't yet read explicitly, that the new ghost ship is gonna be locked behind Athena's and Pirate Legend. However, quite recently SoT - PC Design Lead justteddii mentioned in a reddit comment, that this is indeed the case.

I have to be honest, my BS radar is going haywire with this comment. This seems like one huge fake excuse for why they are more willing to answer a few simple questions on Reddit vs the official forum, especially when the community here has been requesting more engagement for a while now.

When you click on that community drop down you will see that huge, gawdy INSIDER PROGRAMME link. "Help shape Sea of Thieves!" Who here feels like an insider anymore? This is kind of why them engaging more on Reddit vs here feels more like a slight. What is the point of the insider program anymore?

  • Well, I didn’t mean to drum up any spite against Rare. I only wondered which they preferred to use and respond on. I know they keep a good eye on these forums. The mod letting us know that they can’t say anything major on an official source because of legalities makes complete sense. But, I only asked the question because Rare only gave a humorous response to a player in a reddit sub. Nothing official, only fun. I’d never seen that on here so I assumed there was a reason for them doing it on Reddit and not here.

Rare does good work. All in all I can say i’m happy they are responding somewhere.

  • Still looks like reddit keeps on getting replies from the devs while official forum almost never. Very odd.

  • @dekeita my thoughts exactly.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Are you kidding me? Term "white knights" is an offense? Sorry, mate but you deckhands are overdoing it. Reddit, here I come.

  • Reddit seems like a much more accessible medium, particularly as the "top" comments are the first thing you see which provides instant gratification for the most interesting stuff. Kind of like the comics section being on the front page of a newspaper.
