Loot Division

  • With the upcoming alliance feature being added I think it’s a great time for the development team to address the loot values.

It makes no sense to have a chest sell for 4x the price simply because there are 4x as many hands in the cookie jar. Each item should have a base value that is then divided amoung the crew. With an alliance it should be divided between the crew members of multiple crews.

Many of us have taken advantage of this, and I for one have stood at a tavern, holding a chest of legends while our crew of 3 tried to find a forth friend to share in the wealth... but it’s really silly that this situation exists.

I have to agree with this. The math just doesn't add up. It would make the "hard mode" of solo slooping worth it as you'd get the full value being the sole member of your crew. Maybe exaggerate the loot share a bit (a 1000g captains chest nets 500g per crew of four instead of 250g) but still not have it so everyone gets the face value.

I'll admit the values of turn ins would have to be increased to compensate but that would just make it MORE worthwhile for us solo sailors!

XP gains should be equal across the board however.

  • Sea of Thieves is a team game. So ofc there is a certain incentive in place to favor team play.

Threads like this probably make Rare very sad.

  • @omnipotence13 It's an interesting predicament because we want to incentivize playing together since the game is based heavily on a crew. I definitely get where you're coming from with the loot value being split. I would prefer it this way myself. The hard part comes in when balancing the efficiency of a crew verse a solo. We don't want people to only revert to solo play so that they get more value for their loot. We also don't want crew play to be so vastly more efficient in obtaining loot that solo sloop is completely useless.

I really don't know how they are going to handle this alliance thing. The last thing I want is for people to just make server wide alliances and farm voyages till the sun goes down amassing more loot more quickly and getting gold from other people's haul.

  • Working together and dividing loot doesn’t mean less loot. I am actually looking at this and thinking Athena’s. Would three ships (assuming equal skill and experience) be able to farm 3 quests in under a third of the time that one ship completes 1?

Doing them cooperatively and region based instead of covering the whole map as a single crew could in fact increase rewards. This is counting a system which divides the loot evenly.

An alliance simply by removing competition and reducing PvP is going to be able to accumulate more per vessel. This could be of further benefit to those who are organized. I don’t see loot as a lack of “team” dynamics.

  • And as said before it just doesn’t make sense. If you offer $20 to a kid to mow your lawn, and he invites 7 friends and says you now owe them $160 for that 1 lawn.... would you pay?

Maybe objective is to give incentive to not play solo, because that's what the game is about? Just random thoughts.

I definitely agree with you that there needs to be a downside to the alliance feature in the form limiting the number of people in the alliance but also crews only getting a certain cut of the loot. I think it the loot should be slightly more than half, like 60/60 for two crews or something.

However I disagree that they should make solo play worth more than crew play as the whole game is based around playing with a crew. They even released a video in which they explained that in their view a sloop is a nice stepping stone to get to know the game and work your way up to a full crew galleon. Punishing people for having a full crew by lowering their loot would give the wrong signal in my opinion.

  • @omnipotence13 hello mate, I don't think it will be to split the value.
They talked about sharing among the alliance.
So I'm seeing all gaining the total amount of gold and reputation.

Captain chest giving 700g(total it's value) to everyone

It's a huge benefit to easy grind I see. But I think it wouldn't be that easy to create fairly and trusty alliances.
Mostly because we're doing that with total strangers and let's be fair, we're all pirates.

If there's no disadvantage to alliances, then my guess is that most people will not break the alliance, except for a few "trolls" that will just break them for laughs.

  • The point is, what will be the reason to create an alliance?

To fight against strong enemies, retrieve loot and share it equal with those who helped you, share voyages with people who you liked to meet in that session.

Well we cannot discuss here how it actually works, but I can see some problems from how it works. And people not wanting to be part on this.

  • I can see people resisting this. Intentionally targeting a system you don’t feel should have been added doesn’t make you a troll.

If they don’t balance the alliance system, then I don’t think it makes me a troll to open fire on anyone with an alliance/alliance request flag. I hope others who think it’s a terrible move do the same
