Hey,
do you consider every game, that has a dlc to be unfinished?
because in that case, it's almost every game out there... also a good example of unfinished games releases would be all episodic titles. Everything from Telltale or Life is Strange etc.
I've never seen a game (small indie titles excluded), that didn't have to cut some content to make a reasonable release date. And if you read through some interviews, devs usualy have no problem with admitting it. At some point you just have to stop adding and changing things and focus on testing and polishing. Otherwise you'd end up with another Duke Nukem Forever or Daikatana.
And since you've mentioned books, how does Game of Thrones end again?
I once had a discussion with someone of how the gaming industry changed. Back in the day games had to be near perfect before they could be released. And ofcourse there were bug (wich now lead to awesome speedruns xD) and in some region you have different bugs cause they got release later and were given a more polished version.
When the internet became more regular in every household and games became more active on the internet and the possibility of patching arrived Company's started to release games earlier (alpha's - Beta's - And the well knows Early Access) to test them wich as i see t is a very powerful tool maby the game starts out as not so great but the feedback they got during those periods helped them with the game they are currently working on and future projects.
And i came to the statement that back then you had a "finished" game but you could not adjust anything if there was a game breaking bug in there you were ruined and had to hope your next project does not fail. And games like Warframe, Inquisitor Martyr, Ark and also Sea of thieves should be happy they released around this time cause back then it would have failed. Now some games can completely turn around when released earlyer to the public.
