Rude swearing name calling pirates. Please play to pirate code.

  • I had the dubious experience to come across some bullying rude pirate legends and I was playing in a party with a friend and his early teen son, and my wife.

Now pirates are generally crass low life types in history but in the game, I don't think we should have to hear...

"We have your galleon so [Mod edited]"
"How do you like that [Mod edited]" to my wife
"[Mod edited] we own you now."

We took game clips and reported them to Rare so hoping they get banned and we logged out and back in and were put on a server with no further incidents.

I think there are limits to how to play your pirate character in-game, be aware children play too and just because your online you are not hidden from view, its not okay behaviour, If it happens again I won't be afraid to report you and I would also say if I watch gameplay videos on Sea of Thieves and hear bullying I will also not hesitate to report the videos to Rare. Of course, I can tolerate swearing in videos but not bullying or racist or belittling verbal barrages.

I urge other players to read the pirate code, adhere to it, play respectfully as young ears are listening and play responsibly.

It really soured are evening gameplay and so we had to leave and come back in to shake off the sick feeling we all had that our friends son had to hear such rudeness.

Adding to this post I watched the Official Sea of Thieves New York Comic Con 2017 Panel re the Pirate Code (26:06m into the video):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYXUR7v8AsU&feature=youtu.be&t=1566

"Don't be a [Mod edited] in Sea Of Thieves" is what I take from the video.

  • @robtinbc There is no excuse for it, especially when they obviously won the battle.

Sure you can feel sorrow and even angry when defeated but to swear and curse like that when you win is just beyond me. Just imagine if they were sunk, the language would be ten fold.
Good on you for recording it and following through with the report ticket.
Everybody should record every game session.

  • Far too many people lose all human decency when they can be mostly anonymous. It blows. Don't forget you're on the internet and in a multi-player game. Things are going to be said because people know not much is going to be done about it. The kid is going to be exposed to it sooner or later if hes playing games online anyway. No one is really accountable for what they say or do anymore. That trash talk you described is kinda tame really. There wasn't anything threatening or racist about it, just vulgar really. I think Xbox is who you should report that to. I believe Rare can only pass it on to Xbox to take action for that sort of thing.

  • Online competitive play has largely ruined gamers. I love Sea of Thieves and its community, its a shame when some let the pvp of this game be a vent for the type of toxic trash you see in more common online games.

  • Yeah.. There are apparently ppl who manages to be that horrible even in a happy and social game like SoT.

It doesn't happen often but I came across a sloop the other day while doing a fort and there was this guy on it who was constantly taunting me in voice chat. They were 2v1 and played well so i couldn't do much and he was saying things like "you're garbage", "kill yourself", "worst pirate legend i've seen".. And those are just the things that i can write here hehe.. he sure liked to mention i was PL a lot.

I've played games all my life so I'm used to stuff like that, but still sometimes it gets to me and it really ruins the experience :/

  • @gutterangel I hear you but Rare in the Con video I added basically say they won't stand for it, don't be a [Mod edited] in the game to others beyond the boundaries of being a pirate.

As a player in a multiplayer environment where any age can be playing be aware that you are accountable for your actions, people are listening and Rare and most of the game playing community in Sea Of Thieves should not and will not stand for such comments, I tamed it down in my post, they said more and worse and the malice in the voice, the affliction in the words and how they said them, it was sickening.

I ran into a 7-year-old on a sloop and we had 5 sloops taking out a Galleon who had been terrorizing the seas, it was a blast, no one was rude or hateful, crews from all vessels even joked when on the ship of the damned with each other, it was a great adventure.

Rare has the videos I believe and they will deal with it accordingly I am sure but I think the general community in-game will not stand for it and should and will report it.

  • @robtinbc Please refrain from swearing on our forums, as it is a violation of our Forum rules. This does include quoting others who were swearing, and the proper course of action is always to raise a support ticket for assistance. We have edited your posts accordingly.

    Obscene and Vulgar Language
Swearing is not permitted on the Forums and a profanity filter is in place to block it. Attempts to bypass the profanity filter will result in a temporary ban from the Forums and a final warning. If the action continues, a permanent ban from the Forums will be issued.

  • Does anyone know how to share screenshots with rare? I took on the other day on the ferry when someone wrote the f-bomb over text chat. I want to send him the picture while also adding that I sent it to rare so he can kindly follow his own words.

P.s. I had no other encounters with this guy

  • @hmittons send a support ticket here https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

depending on the category you choose it will give you the option of attaching a screenshot

  • @triheadedmonkey thanks! I'll check into it.

To add more to the discussion, always make sure to stop fellow crew members if they being swearing on game chat. I've had to do that a few times and being proactive only makes a better player base

  • Let us know who to avoid! I know we can't mention GTs but it would be handy. Rodl, why is she so handy? Meh. Quick shanty ref there.

  • @hmittons no worries, if you select 'I wish to report a toxic player' (wording may vary) it will give you the option of adding a screenshot.

if you know their Gamertag you can also visit their profile (either on Xbox or the Xbox app for Windows or via the Xbox.com website) and report them from there specifically for the in-game text.

EDIT: clarification...I'm not asking for the Gamertag, but if you know it you can use it to report via their profile

  • @triheadedmonkey got it submitted. I had the screenshot so I have their username and will also report them on Xbox. In the end I think he'll receive his own message ;)

  • @hmittons Nice. If people detrimental to the game can be kicked? Yum.

  • How are they speaking to you if you're in a party?

  • I had a look at that game clip, I have to admit it was a little hard finding it because somebody else recorded it, but it was worth it, I’m my self a huge fan of those types of clips, I really enjoyed those 5 minutes laughing at those pirate “legends” saying “we are now the owners of this ship, surrender because we are pirate legends so you can’t deal with us”, an immature way for those adults to feel superior.

  • Sorry this happened to you, reporting them was the right thing to do. Sadly you must expect this kind of behaviour when playing online games or engaging in any online activity. No matter what game you play, as long as it's online there will always be some toxic people who feel safe in saying whatever they want behind a monitor.

  • I think my crew can attest that every other word out of my mouth is some vulgarity or other. Not malicious, just the way I talk.

People kicking your butt and taunting is crass though. I reserve that for when they fire on us first.

  • I don't think swearing should be a bannable offense at all. Personally, I think the idea of "swear words" is ridiculous. Some combination of sounds are offensive to some people regardless of the context. Also, some people like to trash talk. Competitive banter can add value to games for people. Sometimes it gets out of hand and of course some people are just terrible people. However, maybe you should just ignore it and not take it so personally. It probably sounds more vicious to you when you are on the receiving end of the butt-whooping and taunting but again, try not to take it personally. Another consideration is that they simply don't know you are playing with a child. You may not like your child exposed to swear words, but to expect the entire world to share your stance on swear words and forcibly imposing your will on others is pretty vindictive.

I talk a little smack sometimes, but it is usually very tame unless an opponent is flaming hard. When I get spanked and someone talks some smack I can't help but smile and think "dang, he got me! "

As a disclaimer, I'm not siding with the people who were rude to you, just offering additional perspective.

  • Pirates weren't the friendliest bunch. You're in a game where stealing is literally in the title, a game where PvPing is quite frankly one of the only things to do. You're in a game where there is a sense of competitive nature and people generally don't like to die or be set back in progress (Losing ship and booty.) so it is quite obvious words will be slung during all this taking place.

Seems Microsoft is infact against swearing though. Hilarious really, considering one of their most popular game titles in recent memory was the Halo series, which was pretty much built around the idea of t*********g people and yo'mama jokes(Most the time obscene.) Heh, next stop, grabbin hands and standing around the campfire.

(Then there is RARE who polices their own forums by not fixing the auto system and a word like Tel-l-ing is censored.) hah

  • @kzoo-kid
Aye. Probably the best assessment in the thread.

  • @robtinbc Some people just dont know how to handle themselves smh 🤦🏻‍♂️ Where as our group of legends does stuff like this: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/67428/new-interesting-ways-the-things-4-pirate-legends-get-up-to-while-vandalising-statues/2
Its a shame u guys didnt run into us last night, we were having a blast giving away prizes to other ships

  • @lady-aijou Sorry, I was quoting a Rare employee. :) won't happen again.

  • @kzoo-kid Sometimes we all swear (well I am sure some people never do ;) ), it's not the words or the sounds, it's the intent in the use of.

Swearing because you crash the boat into a rock is a cursing due to a mistake and I have done it but really try to keep that in check. Swearing at someone and calling them a bleeping bleep bleep is what this thread is talking about.

  • Mama says that if you don't have anything nice to say, Say nothing at all.

  • If I play open crew which is seldom and some oink comes on and is swearing every other word I will give them a chance to keep it in check and if it goes on I will lock them in the brig and explain that it's not ok behavior if you want to be in this crew with me, if they keep on I will report them.

    Simple as that.

Actually found that using XBOX chat either through the App on WIN10 or on the XBOX is good if I am making a live broadcast or a video of youtube channel. (SpectrumGamer ET or SGDad on youtube) Or if I am playing in a group during the day and my 6-year-old is home as he is now due to summer school break.

    Microsoft would disagree.

Also, some people like to trash talk. Competitive banter can add value to games for people.

It should never be personal, and for the most part unless you know the other person keep it toned down.

Sometimes it gets out of hand and of course some people are just terrible people. However, maybe you should just ignore it and not take it so personally. It probably sounds more vicious to you when you are on the receiving end of the butt-whooping and taunting but again, try not to take it personally.

It's not an issue of that. It's inappropriate, shouldn't happen. No reason for the victims of it to have to turn a cheek.

Another consideration is that they simply don't know you are playing with a child.

Irrelevant, they have no idea who is playing behind an avatar and should remain appropriate regardless.

You may not like your child exposed to swear words, but to expect the entire world to share your stance on swear words and forcibly imposing your will on others is pretty vindictive.

Maybe not, but sure sounds like you make excuses for them.

  • @el-dunco Dosh Darn that just swells by golly.

Can I say golly? Not sure if its a racist slur used in this context?

If I ever make it to pirate legend status I think I will become a newbie seeker and give out spoils to all those who deserve it by their actions!

Actually, the wife and I played on a sloop the other night, doing quite well and then a galleon came after us and sunk us but not after we killed some, on the ship of the dead, they said, oh you seem like nice people having a family game night, sorry guys!

It was pretty funny and we shrugged it off as part and parcel of the game.

  • @dragonsire2016 you sound pretty salty and I respectfully disagree with you. You didn't really counter any of the points I made, except to call them irrelevant or that Microsoft disagrees (as if I don't know that). Of course, any sane company would align against vulgarity. If they didn't say anything against it, people assume they support it. And there's no good way to "limit swearing to a reasonable level" because it's too subjective. Logically, the only solution is to be against it entirely.

That doesn't mean I can't disagree. I don't defend people for being terrible people, but I also would consider you a terrible person if you just go around reporting everyone who says something you don't like. Really, it doesn't do anything to you unless you let it. It's just words. So yes, turn the other cheek.

Think of the whole idea like speed limits in traffic. No sane law enforcement agency would say it's okay to speed. Average people don't go around saying "you should speed" because everyone knows it's wrong. However, in reality, most people speed and most people don't care. Imagine if someone went around calling the cops and filing reports on everyone who went over the speed limit. That would be pretty ridiculous and most people would hate that guy, don't you agree?

  • No excuse for it period! there has been too much of this toxic garbage since launch and needs to handled. Especially from a PL that shouldn't be at all cause that's what the end game is. Everyone gets heated but should still remain respectful especially if you come out on top at that point they need to drop the ban hammer.
