The Location of the Gateway to the Devil's Roar (In-depth Theory)

  • Hello there, I have a creative theory about the Forsaken Shores. I would like to say that this theory is mainly about the location of the so-called gateway to the area of the map. Now we all know that the main addition in this update will be the new map location called Devil's Roar. Now I think we can all agree that that this new addition to the map will be somewhere in the current Red Sea. Now I would assume that this gateway to the new area would be in a corner of the current map as this area should be out of the way and nearly impossible to enter by accident due to its dangerous nature. So let's take a look at the four corners of the map: #1, Sailor's Bounty, this corner is the only other corner that I would see as a possible gateway to Devil's Roar because I feel as if this corner of the map is the most void of any sort of action and could use this opportunity to be a more noticeable area of the map. #2, Marauder's Arch, I feel like the Wilds won't house the gateway to this new area because both areas are dangerous and it would be kind of lame and defeat the purpose for the two darker areas to be right next to each other. #3, Shark Bait Cove, this would be a nice place to put the gateway in but this island has already received a lot of attention from the Hungering Deep campaign. #4, Devil's Ridge, This is the one! Now the most solid detail I have is also the most obvious: They seem connected based on their names: Devil's Roar=Devil's Ridge. However, this is not the only thing that supports Devil's Ridge as being the location of the gateway.
Like I proved before it's right on the edge of the map and is (as preferred) on a corner of the map. On a more subtle note, if you take a look in the caves you can see that some unfortunate folks meet their demise here and the ancients who lived on this island were worshiping something (possibly from the Devil's Roar?). The last thing I want to bring up is that the boar was a large part of this island culture and was shown in many depictions from paintings to a shrine for the boar. This shrine is important to talk about as it is in the caves (it was also part of the Gold Hoarder's riddle for the E3 2017 gameplay trailer). This could be some sort of deity for the ancients on this island. This ties in to the theory because the boar has historically been a very aggressive animal which is just like the actual environment in the Devil's Roar! This is the foreshadowing that I think Rare has put in to tell us that the gateway to the Devil's Roar is Devil's Ridge. Thank you for taking the time to read through this huge article and comment with your thoughts. May I see you on the Sea of Thieves!

  • I too have a theory on the "gateway". At this point I am sure that many players have noticed a rather peculiar triangular sea arch towards the center of the map. I believe that could possible be the location as it already appears to be a gateway. Previously my friends and I have see it as SoT's Devil's Triangle, mainly due to our strategy we would use there, that being dropping powder kegs into the archway as we race through it to evade other ships. The other ships, not wishing to drop anchor and turn often run into it leading to a quick and painful demise.

  • @sargent-sully Great idea! I'll be using that one in the future

  • Well, expanding the map is out of the question, so a gateway could be the answer Rare seeks.

  • @sgt-palooggoo ??

  • @retribution213
Oh sorry, I just mean with how the map is currently set up, an expansion to the world means the coordinates of the map are no longer accurate. The Coordinates being the 24 numbers and letters systems

  • Hmmm.

In the Tales of Sea of Thieves book it talks of the Devil's Shroud expanding to reveal new lands, and contracting to conceal previously accseible places. And this seems like a pretty conscious game/lore decision to allow for a reason that there'd be new lands added just to the main map.

But, I suppose the point about the coordinate system is somewhat interesting. Although there's really nothing stopping them from changing it everytime there's a new land added.

  • @dekeita
It will be interesting to see how Rare plays this

  • @dekeita Hey I'm already thinking about a revised theory and you make an awesome point. Could I include your detail in it?

  • Should be a rift through the arch in the middle of the map.

  • @sgt-palooggoo

Surely they could work with the coordinate system in place, perhaps going with a double letter (AA-27 and so on) or even just color coding may be more elegant, such as using red letters or something

  • @retribution213

On the map close to devils ridge you will see some wave markings with a skull. Its the only one on the entire map

  • @retribution213 The gateway is for obvious reasons going to be on the outposts, not in the existing map. For the very same reason as the pirate legend hideout is accessible from every outpost, camping.
