It would be nice to be able to measure the ships speed. It would help ensure your in the best line or identify any issues with your speed, like a sail not all the way down or the ship isn't at a complete stop. what is every ones thoughts?

I’ve seen this request before and think it’s a great idea that would align both thematically and historically,
Knowing what sail angle provides maximum speed would add an engaging and new depth to ship maneuvers in combat.
It would also allow us to see what, if any, speed loss occurs when sailing in choppy water or against (perpendicular to) waves.
Such a device could also be used as part of a cartography system to build maps for unknown areas, giving some purpose to exploration.
For example, we could start at a known island traveling towards an uncharted area. To uncover a part of the new map, the log would need to be dropped at intervals within each map square, after which that map square would be drawn on our main ship table.
Developing these maps could provide reputation with a cartography faction that could increase the level of detail in your maps based on reputation.
In addition, maps of lower detail could be sold to players within a player driven economy, while locking the higher detail maps behind faction progression as a perk to those that put in the time and effort to specialize.
@Hynieth I believe those were called, ships common log, but unfortunately those are a two man tool to use, one had to measure time in a hour glass and the other had to measure how many knots came out the reel. It could probably work in the game, but would have to be simplified for game use.
@ItsPorkchopFu it could definitely give you an advantage if your the type to record cause and effect. Like for instance, at (x) speed your turn radius is (x), or for our best battle speed is (x). Something like that.
@ItsPorkchopFu it could even create a new faction "explorer" and get rewards for discovering new places.
