Carrack - 8 man Ship - Concept Drawings

  • I think it would have to be extremely slow, or have some other disadvantage, because something of this size and strength would be very widely used and abused.

  • @cheatingpirate

The ship I sailed two years on, the modern reconstruction of the full-rigged ship-of-the-line HMS Rose once did 12 1/2 knots in absolutely perfect conditions with all of our 17 sails trimmed spot on. The Golden Hind would have been ecstatic to beat 8 knots with an average of 4-5 being more the norm, which was a little faster than most carracks, though the hind was also longer than most carracks, especially at the water line.

"As a very general rule the maximum speed of any displacement hull--commonly called its hull speed--is governed by a simple formula: hull speed in knots equals 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length in feet (HS = 1.34 x √LWL). Thus, for example, if you have a 35-foot boat with a waterline length of 28 feet, its hull speed works out to a little over 7 knots (1.34 x √28 = 7.09)."

I'll begin by saying I like this thread a lot!

Make sure each decks ceiling height is scaled correctly in the next iteration. Everything below top deck Now looks to be around the height of a man's belly button! Also make sure masts are adequately "based", you might have one that's the tallest, attached to the keel. Could be an idea to make the hull if the ship somewhat taller in order to make room for the extra deck.

More suggestions: • Primary gun deck guns are bigger than standard ines, making them different somehow, or maybe all guns are.
    • Water pump on bottom deck! Takes two to use.
    • Capstan also needs at least two men, because of the heavy anchor.

Fun to see your next sketch/concept.

  • @llamcryf Oh wow, that's rather cool of you having to sail these tall ships! Have you sailed San Salvador yet? She's a galleon specialist I wonder how fast she goes.

@HannesFury yeah I messed up on how thick the lines are and how it looks. But in my mind... they're above head height, with the massive cannon fort being much taller than the decks below it. Due to the cannons needing a bigger area to swivel around that is.

@hannesfury said in Carrack - 8 man Ship - Concept Drawings:

    • Water pump on bottom deck! Takes two to use.

While bilge pumps would be truly awesome, I think they might be an advantage over the buckets we currently have as you would remove the need to run up/down two decks in order to throw your water over the side.

  • @cheatingpirate Your design for a new 8 man carrack is a good idea. Personally I'd prefer something different more like that of a clipper or whaling ship. This would also help improve content for the game as I believe whales would be a great addition to the overall mechanics of 'sea of theives'. Now you might ask yourself but what is the point of including whales, well you could collect oil from their blubber which you could sell to merchants as well as setting fire to it causing damage to ships, by throwing barrels of oil overboard before shooting them to cause the flames. These are of course ideas I have for the game and would love to hear your thoughts upon them.

  • @hurr1c4n3-b0r1s Don't sharks and octopuses have resources too? Like shark oil and kraken ink?

  • If it were to be implemented, I believe they should have a dedicated server. The server could be for Carracks, Galleons and maybe Brigantines. But just imagine the fights that would occur in a server full of Galleons and Carrracks.
