What light be from undersea?

  • OK so let me start off by saying I've only been playing SoT for about 3 days now so I'm ready to believe that what I've been experiencing is nothing more than some common knowledge. Stating that I've scoured reddit and the SoT forums heavily with no results.

So onto the mystery, it all started the second time I fired the game up (Xbox One if it matters). Was playing with a friend who was showing me the ropes for a couple hours when he got offline. I continued sailing the seas alone deciding to use all that I'd learned to try to make a pittance, you all know how that goes. As I was sailing from one island to another the sea around me began to glow with a peculiar bright blueish green color. Very similar in color to the mermaid's torch. At first I thought nothing of it, figured it may have just been a trick of the moon's light. Then the sea moaned. Like a ghostly wail. I'm not talking like what the leaves sounds like and it didn't sound like whatever happens at 3, 3:15, and 3:30. I mean a straight up single ghostly moan. Needless to say, I searched desperately everywhere I could for the source of the ghostly wail and light only to find nothing.

After a good 30 minutes of searching I give up and decide to go sell my treasure. A good hour of pirating and no ghostly wails or glowing sea to speak of. It had been at least a few in game nights at that point so the insurance was at that point not a major concern. Only it happened again. This time somewhere different. The whole space between Old Faithful Isle, Blind Man's Lagoon, Shark Fun Camp, and Black Sand Atoll appeared to be lit this time. Not massively but noticeably. Again the solitary ghostly moan hit me. This time the sound most definitely came from the sea. I was in full investigation mode at that point. With nothing to go off of (no internet source, no shared knowledge between friends, literally nothing but my own experiences) I take note of everything I can and I'll share with you all that I know. The source, whatever it may be seems to be steeming from the water. Underwater color is a very subtle yet notable color change. More green and slightly blueish but not too similar in shades as what you can find elsewhere (yes, underwater color tests became a thing and let me tell you how tedious that was.) No matter how long that light stays in the sea, the moan only happens once and it's usually near the beginning. One final thing has become clear, it's occurring at a much more frequent rate. I just barely logged on tonight and every ingame night it happens to me. I'm going to investigate this further and will post my findings. If any want to help me investigate this let me know and we'll exchange gamertags.

Does anyone have any info on what this could be? It'd be exciting to know if I've stumbled upon something undiscovered but I'd rather see if anyone has discovered this before I get too in depth with this.

  • That ghostly wail the sea made is the kraken, it cries a few times around 3-4am everyday (game time) @AnalAbundance

  • @analabundance I would be very curious to see a recording of this!

  • @apollolegacy01 the moaning is the kraken, not sure what the glow is tho...

  • @simplybutta I figure that's still a very real possibility. I don't usually ever play at 3 or 4, I'm either asleep or working at those times. Saying that still possible.

I mean 3-4am game time, not real time lol, theres a clock in game, its on ur wheel of items

  • @apollolegacy01 Working on that as we speak! Currently waiting for in game nighttime

  • @simplybutta loool I don't know why I never figured in-game time

  • @analabundance 🤣🤣🤣

  • @apollolegacy01 Currently having issues with OneDrive uploads. Not sure why it has to be a chore to upload to youtube from xbox now, used to be easy. Anyways until I can figure that out I've got a video posted my profile. My ign is the same as my name here

  • @analabundance on my xbox profile, I mean to say

The moan is most definitely the Kraken. However, I once saw a green glow similar to a villainous skull's (but on a larger scale) coming from shallow water off Devil's Ridge. This was during the beginning of the Skeleton Throne event, so I had initially thought it was a submerged throne (I had not seen one yet, so I had no idea what I was looking for). I investigated but found nothing out of the ordinary. When I resurfaced, the glow was gone. I don't know if was a glitch or the grog playing tricks on me again, but I believe I saw something.

  • @analabundance Glowing sea?
Here's a quick video. Glow can be spotted after about 20 to 30 seconds in. At first I thought it may have been the a tricl of the moon's light. I guess that's still possible but the glow will cut off at certain areas. I'm not sure if that's due to graphical reasons or otherwise though. Gonna try to take more videos and edit out all the unnoteworthy parts.

After watching your video, I believe that is the moonlight refracting as the water swells. Still, it's best to keep your eyes open out on the Sea of Thieves. Strange things are bound to happen...
