What is the value of a ship?

  • Does anyone think that the actual ships in the game should hold some kind of value? I don’t like that they are basically disposable right now. A fresh one is just a moment away at all times.

Really, a ship would be worth keeping and selling versus sinking if at all possible. Since players loose their ship anyways, there should be a feature to commandeer another ship by force, and sell it back at an outpost.

  • While it’s a neat idea it would clash with other mechanics. You can’t really steal a ship when they can use a mermaid or spawn back

  • There's been lots of talk in the past, of taking the flag down via a rope at the bottom of the mast and that doing so would make that ship your crew's new spawn point and removing the original crew's ability to spawn back on it. They could still take it back technically, but it would be hard, though taking a ship in this fashion could be hard as well. Mostly what I've seen is people saying one person has to interact with the rope at all times for 60 seconds. Being damaged would have the flag shoot up the rope, back to the top, in a tenth of the time it takes to come down (6 seconds from the very bottom).

As for the original post, I'd say a fair implementation would be that if you don't sink, every hour of gameplay would equal out to 150 gold by talking to the shipwright. Now as to how this would be explained? I can't think of a reason the shipwright would reward you for said ship, especially since you are kinda just gonna spawn a new one next time you get on.

  • @loopct and @Sandmanbakery

To take ownership of another vessel opens a whole new can of worms.
What is to stop that crew from inviting more friends to man the newly acquired ship, then another and another? Before long the whole server could become the one fleet of friends.
All it takes is one random to invite you back to that ship's crew and hey presto, a new guild is born among established friends.

  • @admiral-rrrsole I think you misunderstand. You don't own both ships. you simply move your respawn from the previous ship to the new one. The other crew gets to respawn their same ship as if they had sunk. You don't have two ships you only have the captured one now. Maybe your original would auto scuttle after 2 minutes. This could give you time to transport resources over.

  • @sandmanbakery Oh, Ok. Sorry I was way off track.

  • @Admiral-RRRSole @Sandmanbakery @Omnipotence13

It doesn’t need to clash with anything else, if you perform some action on the other ship to take control of it, then it would have the same effect as if the ship sank for that crew... they would just spawn to a new one.

This wouldn’t mean you can invite other players, or expand your own crew to fill another vessel. If anything, it might be a hassle to sail two ships with the same number of crew you have. Just like carrying a chest of sorrows adds a challenge if you know what I mean.
If you sail the extra ship to an outpost, it could be sold for a decent profit.

Conversely, if you return to an outpost after a long play session with the same ship as you started, perhaps that also could be recognized for some reward, showing you took care of it well.

I think little things like this add additional layers of strategy and motivation for players.

Instead of immediately thinking “this breaks the current mechanics” it just takes a little creativity to see what it would take to make it work well... we need solutions...not objections! Those come easy.

  • Sorry if my reply came across as being objective purely for the sake of being objective. When I understand the intent of a suggestion I try to expand on it and encourage the possibility of bouncing ideas back and forth.

So, this time only re-reading your posts in this thread, I see that you aren't suggesting "keeping" the acquired vessel, despite it being in your OP.

Providing that, as your second post states, that you could not use the second vessel to expand your crew, then I see no harm in it. This could add to a new "villainous" rep which would have been more suited to becoming a "pirate legend" than chasing pigs and chickens.

Would there be a time limit in selling the ship? If so, how long would it take before being considered as keeping the ship outright?
Would this second ship break apart after a certain time like in the red sea?

Returning to an outpost with the same ship you started with after whatever is considered a lengthy game session could be an idea for a commendation.
The more battles your ship endured could give higher praise although that might be further cause to PvP every newby in sight which will drive away a large portion of the current playerbase.

It's like walking a tight-rope and balancing the pros and cons. We can't just think about the feather in our left hand when we have a brick in our right hand. lol :o)

  • Considering I can pillage every ship in sight for an entire day using less than 50 planks a majority of the time and a crate of planks is about 300-350gp id say less than 300gp.

  • @admiral-rrrsole

No worries mate! I find we usually see eye to eye on most topics.

A time limit would probably need to be in place, otherwise since the losing pirates would get a new ship after you acquired their original, the server could end up with more and more ships accumulating if people tried to abuse the system😂 “Sea of ships” we’d have to call it

That we do my friend. :o)

😂 “Sea of ships” we’d have to call it

How about "Honest Admiral's" ship yard and dry dock? lol
"100pct barnacle free" in that we don't charge extra for the barnacles. ;o)

  • @loopct I've thought about this for awhile and now that they've got flags they could pull this off. If you board another ship you should be able to swap their flag with yours and claim the ship for yourself but it should take time, like twice as much time as it takes to raise an anchor.

    Just my two cents

  • I get what ya mean about the ship's having no value.
    Sink it....who cares.
    Crash it....who cares.
Unless there's an amount of loot on board, ships have no meaning or value.

I thought of an idea that would quickly shift the value dramatically.....if you sink your ship, a new one won't spawn til the same time tomorrow (in game time of course)....or several days later.

Being marooned would/could finally happen. Having to find your way back to an outpost would become your primary goal.

Adventurers would swim from island to island trying to find and repair a row boat or build one from a large number of boards....like 30 or 40.

But I'm sure that most would just quit out or server hop or commit suicide to get their ship back.
In that case, the system would still keep track of the time that you've waited and prevent the ship from spawning until the 24 hrs (or whatevs would make a real impact) had expired.

I don't mean to derail any current ideas...just including this to show why, I feel, ships have no value.

  • @sandmanbakery love the idea, but i dont think you should be able to take the flag down with a rope at the bottom, i think you should have to climb up there and get it

  • @twiztedkarrtoon I think being at the bottom of the main mast is better, if only because putting two people up in the crow's nest makes it nearly impossible to attack it. one taking the flag down, and the other guarding the ladder. At the bottom of the main mast, the one taking the flag down is in open view of everyone, can be easily seen/attacked, and has to have someone else guarding them for the duration of the flag capture

  • I'll start the bid....... ' 1 dollar '... do I hear any higher than 1 dollar...

  • Last night a crew bought my sloop for two fine skulls shrugs

  • @sandmanbakery right or just be sneaky, but harder is better easy just plain sucks

  • The value of the ship is easy:

When you join a random crew it is as follows:

15 Cannon Balls per barrel = Worthless

50 or More Cannon Balls in top Barrel = worth talking to the crew and seeing if they are idiots

100 + Cannon Balls = priceless - good crew get ready for some fun!
