Suggestion () Whirlpools And Other Random Occurrences

  • I was thinking, Sailing around the Sea of Thieves to a distant island can be quite time consuming and with nothing to do on the way there except entertain yourself with music or be unlucky enough to run into a Kraken.. That possibly random occurrences that could happen whilst your sailing may be rather interesting. This brought me to the idea that Whirlpools and other different things could be rather fun to be added to the Sea of Thieves. Ones of different sizes and strengths that need great skill to sail out of would add another interesting aspect to the game!

I know this could be a long shot but I do think it would be fun, please let me know what you think i'm open to any opinions even negative ones. :)

  • What do you suggest would be the range for the event of a maelstrom? Would it be limited to one coordinate block? And how would a ship be able to fight its way out? Do you suggest that some small tools be utilized or perhaps to limit the danger of the event for different types of ships? I ask to open up some suggestions to the design process of this potential event.

  • Slooping it up last night and randomly having a Megalodon appear off the starboard bow and nearly crash into our boat was THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO ME IN THIS GAME IN MANY DAYS!

I am in full agreement we need as many cool, scary, interesting random instances as we can get.

  • @rocketman011 I agree, I just thought of the Idea and wanted the community to add to It, I do think that it would have to be 1 co-ordinate block big at most. However I would need some help thinking about how to get out, just possibly having strong currents in the Whirlpools that you would have to either break with something or dodge them if in a sloop.

  • Hard turn out of the whirlpool, also rogue waves, if ur facing them head on u can go over it but if ur sideways itll capsize u

  • @colicemperor53 So with the size determined, I've been thinking about the event working on the ships attempt to escape. The galleon would have the disadvantage of being heavier, and the sloop would have the disadvantage of not getting as much wind to pull up and out. As for the maelstrom, the escape could use currents leading out, and seeing it within the foam on the swirl of the water. I suggest three tiers for getting out, and it takes from 3-10 minutes to get out. This is dependent on the crew. If you don't make it up and hit the foam part, like a storm, it will damage your ship, and if you make it up a tier, then the process gets a bit easier. These are suggestions and open to counters and alternatives.

  • @rocketman011 Awesome, I think everything about your idea makes perfect sense. I hope this gets more focus and looked at. Thanks you so much for helping out ! :)

  • Yeah, the mechanics would be tricky, but possible.

I think the winds would be key. Inside the whirlpool the winds would be constantly moving in the direction of the swirl. You would need to keep the sails at full billow in order to keep from being pulled into the center and destroyed. When they break in the direction of the edge, you have to be immediately ready to angle the sails and crank the wheel. Do it just right and you could break free in one try, otherwise you might need to do this multiple times before breaking free.

Meanwhile there's debris of wrecked ships swirling with you. When they hit the hull they cause holes that have to be patched!

  • @captain-arcanic I also think the part of broken ships would be an interesting feature for the biggest of big whirlpools !!

  • @captain-arcanic Wind is a good suggestion as it would keep the crew at an alert for that window of escape. Would having to check wind hinder actually looking at the event? This game has a tendency to create striking and intense visual scenes to provide a response, most players remember their first kraken by its distinct visuals. Also, the shipwreck bit could work, if we assume that the ships were sunk by a previous maelstrom, or if they are pulled in as the event goes on. All around good suggestion, thanks.

  • Yeah. Broken ships floating by. If you're daring, you could jump on them and loot them. jumping back aboard your ship on the next pass.

  • More than one ship in a whirlpool could cause horrible ramming incidents! Epic!

  • Firing broadside cannons across the center!

  • @captain-arcanic Im so glad this has opened such a discussion and a good one too! Thanks so much for contributing guys, I hope this gets a deep think about being added!

  • @captain-arcanic Would the tilt of the maelstrom affect the cannon angle? This would take time to make, but would be a neat detail. Also, imagine trying to gunpowder another ship whilst escaping.

  • @rocketman011 OR Dropping the gunpowder barrel into the whirlpool! this would cause it to spin and hit another ship! or possibly your own!!!!! EPIC

  • @colicemperor53 Exactly, or if it reaches the center it would explode to create an intense visual. I was also thinking about the loot, how does one obtain stuff from ships that sink from this event? Also, would a skeleton ship from cursed sails be able to get caught up in this event. I could see a number of opportunities this could provide.

  • @rocketman011 Possibly It could occour in storm conditions, In the moment all of the ships that sink would add wreckage and have there loot dropped into the sea and swirled into the middle. Once the storm passes. Say 10 - 15 minutes, the Whirlpool dies down and you can go collect your floating loot.

On the skeleton ship basis. Maybe in the DLC World we could have skeletal pirate ships launch out from the middle like in the new pirates of the Caribbean. This would add good game play and an intense visual.

Im sorry for the slow replies can only do one every 120 seconds

  • @colicemperor53 What would be the true incentive for the crew to stick around after escaping? I'm trying to think of ways to it being like when the kraken shows up and you slowly sail through it. If perhaps there was a cursed or event chest attached to the event as well, or something along the lines of like the ship debris that @Captain-Arcanic was discussing where extra loot could be found.

  • @rocketman011 Yes! an event chest would be good for this. possibly a title reward for surviving and handing in the goodies! Also having a kind of... Wall of wind to stop other ships from firing into the Whirlpool from safety. This turns it into a almost. Survival of the fittest in a swirling competitivness

  • @colicemperor53 I completely forgot about titles, and other potential cosmetics. Like a swirl sails, or something along the storm design for a livery. The introduction of the event would make a great follow up to forsaken shores, feeding into the environment being a threat vibe.

  • @rocketman011 Mhm, I think this would be a great addition to the normal world but another adaptation to the DLC's

  • @colicemperor53 I think it would be an addition outside of dlc updates, but I am trying to imagine the timeline to be considered and with all the features discussed, it would fit perfectly for a release around forsaken shores. Just from a development standpoint and considering the gratification of players.

  • Imagine the Meg getting caught in the whirlpool with you. And then the Kraken showing up in the center. And then your head explodes!
