Chat wheel

  • Just a very minor addition that would be beneficial to at least some... Generally if I play with open crews, or solo I dont wear a headset... I can get by with the chat wheel just fine. The only downside that I come across is I always feel bad when I need to leave... Please add an option on the wheel to at least say bye! I stand there and wave for a bit, but there's no guarantee they know what I'm saying... There's an ahoy, but no bye..

  • @gu1tarpunk41 Would also appreciate a "Skull Fort?" option.

  • they should add text chat to xbox. other games have had text chat in their games and it's unfair that PC players have that advantage over xbox users. they could even make it so you needed the chat pad. I'm sure players would buy it. I don't see why it's not in the game already.

Xbox users can't say "skull fort." and "need help with weekly event." or "brig." "event." "I see a galleon/sloop" when i ask which ship they spot. It's annoying that i have to leave the wheel and look in the direction they are shouting. and i could be here all day listing things they can't say so I'll stop here. but the most annoying thing when I'm not playing with my regular crew on mics is when I'm in a storm with randoms and they are spamming west, west, WEST! when my compass is spinning and I'm asking for directions.. I can't see where west is. -.- ... I need left or right directions.

    Generally it feels so much easier playing with PC players because they'll tell me things on text chat like "shore under water." which will let me know not to get too close to the island and "rock ahead." "Sunken ship." there's been so many times players have had me drop the anchor for barrels. ;-;

grab a piece of wood, open the chat wheel and you will see a "time to bail" follow up with a "thanks"

It's sad that xbox users have to switch to so many different tools to say simple things when rares all about trying to promote friendly interactions and isn't giving the player base the means to do so.

  • @ath3na-cr33d

its true, but since ive been playing more often ive actually connected my mic, first game ive done that for. i would like to see an option to say which island we should head to other that just east\west kind of thing. i know ive been on the helm and i keep getting "west, west, west" and I'm thinking i know but there is an island in my way lol

  • @gu1tarpunk41

More options are always good, and some kind of "goodbye" option is a must. I'm hoping they'll keep adding to the chat wheel and emotes as time goes on.

I play on mic too but I find it difficult to communicate with most players. I'll say something simple like "is that ship still at the outpost or is it gone?" and I'll either receive no answer at all as many players don't use mics and can't hear me or I'll receive an "aye." and I'm thinking. "Aye it's there or it isn't?" and I know it's my fault and I should say "is the ship still there." but when I'm playing I don't want to have to analyze everything I'm saying.

I'm surprised there aren't forums asking for text chat. for me that's far more important that being able to close a door on a galleon or adding badges for how many ships you've sunk. like the most recent threads are requesting.

  • it would be a much easier/fun experience being able to interact with players that can actually type to you when they can't use their mic. there's no reason they shouldn't be able to if other games have done this for years.

  • @ath3na-cr33d

provided they have a key pad, would take forever with and onscreen keyboard

  • "Time to move!"
    "Sorry"
    "Cheers"
    waves

Well that could be the players option. I think it should be available without the keypad because even ROBLOX can do this and it wouldn't be fair to exclude the players that can't buy one for whatever reason. but would be beneficial to have a keypad.

  • @norloc

What would be cool is if you could type out your own words and short phrases and save them in a seperate text chat menu. That might be asking a bit much though.

I finally replaced my mic so I can use voice chat, but my low-level social anxiety still sometimes tempts me to stick with the chat wheel.

  • @v**a-hombre

yea a 10 option menu of your choosing is cool. i typically don't like the garbage people say, but this game hinges on it, team work is essential and the game moves very fast in the thick of it, and makes life so much easier

  • @gu1tarpunk41
    Only 2 options i see.

    1. Plug your mic in and talk to your crew like you should.
    2. Rare adds a whole new auto chat window w/ the options you're asking for.
Now what one do you think makes more sense...
Gonna be honest here. If you have a mic and you're not using it while in a crew. Its not rares fault it's yours.. The problem with Text chat for xbox there is only 3 non keybinded keys on an xbox controller. you would lose 1 of those to add text chat. when you hit text chat (even on pc) it stops all movement in game until you're done using the text chat. This mechanic on xbox would be worse speed wise. So yet another thing xbox players would then complain about not being fair w/ pc.
      Plug your mic in.
  • You would imagine text chat would have been in the game at launch. I use a mic with my crew and rarely play with randoms but when I do, nobody has a mic. I don't blame them tbh, I would prefer not to the talk whilst playing but having at least text would make sure everyone in your crew could see as opposed to hoping they can hear. Having a custom chat wheel with messages you've created would be super userful. Some I feel are needed are "brig gamertag", "event?" And "Hold fire". There's been a few times where I've seen a player dropping our loot oveeboard and I've said in the game chat to brig them but nobody votes. I usually have to message them and by that time, half our loots gone.

  • @n3ro-cr33d
    throw the anchor

  • we need text speak on xbox. it would fix all these issues people have. I play with a mic 90% of the time and its so infuriating when you realise there is no easy way to communicate with another player or crew whos in party chat.

The odd occasions when i'm not using a mic (because of the time and having to be quiet etc) its just as infuriating that i can't simply type. Just the other day doing the skeleton forts it was a nightmare without text chat. literally, there was no way to simply type "marauders throne" as an example. Some one asked me if my sails were lvl 50 GH or OoS? i couldn't respond. the presets dont cut it. They are fine for most of the time but i'd love to just press T on my chat pad or use a usb keyboard.

    @TEDDY-25

  • @hudson-rl
Pretty sure i watched a video where rare said they wanted crews to use their voice chat as the primary communication with a possibility of future search preference of crews based on voice chat crew and text chat crew. Anyone can buy a set of skullcandy or apple iphone in ear headphones w/ mic built into the cord for $10-$15 plug right into controller and it works. (I've done it) Imo the text chat is fine as is and rares time needs to be spent doing better stuff then adding text chat for xbox that imo wouldn't be used because of how inconvenient it is and losing 1 of 3 unmapped keys to add text chat.

  • Maybe utilise the Xbox app, so being able to type with a tablet or phone. If the game can recognise a chat pad is connected you can just use that, rather than having an intrusive virtual keyboard pop up.
I generally play at night so try not to use voice chat too much.
Also having two cycles on the basic chat wheel is not enough as once you got accustomed to it you can quickly find phrases. I could quickly cycle theee menus of the basic chat wheel as well as the item chat wheel.

Gonna be honest here, what if someone can't speak or hear? They wouldn't be able to use the headset "like they should". Or if someone gets paired on your crew that speaks a different language. I personally ran into that when trying to get a crew together for the hungering deep. No matter what I said in the mic, they couldn't understand, but we were able to communicate using the chat wheel.
Also, they added colorblind mode to assist people with vision. Why not make it easier for people with speech?

The main reason I personally choose not to use the headset all the time is simply because of 2 reasons:

    1. It can be noisy in the house (kids playing, loud music, people visiting). My freinds would understand the background noise, strangers most likely wouldn't.
    2. I currently have 2 different turtle beach headsets (one was close to 200 bucks), and 3 cheap ones from Amazon. The reason I have so many is because after a few hours they start to make my ears soar. Maybe I just have odd shaped ears, Idk.

Nowhere did I say it was Rares fault. I simply said it would be a good option to have one of the preset chat options be a way of saying goodbye, especially considering they already have ahoy as one of the options.

Lastly there is a 3rd option that makes more sense than both the choices you mentioned to solve the communication issues. When you have the chat wheel open, you already have to press x to get to "more"... Why not simply make it so if you select "more" a second time it gives you more options? It should be minimal effort to add something like that. If they didn't want people to use the chat as a form of communication they wouldn't have even made it an option...

  • to many functions with not enough buttons i think

  • @gu1tarpunk41
    1.The magic of a mute button (;
    2. Those in ear earbuds may work better for your ears. $10-$15
3.at what point would you expect rare to stop adding to the chat wheel you ask for a 3rd page now. what after that a 4th and 5th page? Na just use your mic especially since you have one.....
    4. About someone speaking a different language. sorry but i would just leave the game right away. find a server where the crew can communicate with you as that is the most important thing for a good crew and quality of gameplay.

  • @gu1tarpunk41 I use both a mic and chat wheel. A few things they are missing:

    • a response to 'FRIEND or FOE?!'
    • Chat wheel while holding a skull fort key ( haven't checked recently but this not being in the game from the beginning was odd ). I mentioned it before but I think adding 'I lost the skull fort key' would be an awesome option... because It would have to be in your hand. Just hearing people bite and say 'what?!' Would make it so worth it
  • all xbox consoles come with a headset. some just don't want to use it for many reasons; some real like social anxiety. while the mainstay of the game is open voice chat, some just cant.

  • games have implemented the text feature for years. I'm unsure if i can name other gameing titles in the forum otherwise I would name the ones familiar with.

if PC users have it. I don't see why xbox users can't have it. and I can think of plenty of binding keys they could use if that's the issue some of you are claiming, other games have chat and have been doing so for years. SOT has no excuse other than their own unwillingness to add it.

mic should NOT be the only option if it's not the only option for the ALL platforms.

if voice chat is how they wanted players to communicate then that should mean all players not a certain portion.

that is what is called an unfair advantage/favoring

care to tell me what bindings will work for text chat? I use banana and bucket on d pad and planks on stick. removing any of those would drastically slow down my repair times on console (; just saying.

    EDIT:
if they add elite controller rear paddle support so i can set bucket banana plank ext to the paddles individually instead of it just being an extra button to an already mapped button this could work.

If you would rather equip an item you can already equip in the game by using other keybindings and lock yourself out of communication? thats on YOU because you chose to bind those keys. NOT RARE. so if they were to use those keys, YOU chose to lock yourself from communication. otherwise players could say, "I don't want Y to equip my sword! rare that means this feature can't be added because Y would slow me down when I want Y to read my map." - see how stupid that sounds?

Key bindings. - LB and RB pushed together. (Other titles use this method)

And I'm not a developer. I'm sure RARE would be better at implementing this feature than I am but I fail to believe they are the only gaming company to have the issue of "not enough keys." (Edited because I felt I came across mean O:)

Its marginally faster w/ keybindings and far less chance of a misclick (cant tell you how many times i sword lunge while trying to eat a banana on console using the wheel) I personally think if you want text chat convert to pc.. otherwise buck up and use a mic. That is what xbox players on all other games on its platform use to communicate am i right or am i right? Rare could put their time to better use then xbox text chat...
