Chest Of Sorrow Is Worth Less Than A Golden Chicken*?

  • (*with a Merchant Alliance voyage)

I was doing a load of MA voyages with a buddy when we stumbled upon a Chest Of Sorrow. It was worth just over 1K gold.

One of the voyages had 3 golden chickens, for which we got 1,500-1,700 each.

I just found this kind of odd for such a rare chest... and I will from now on refer to anything that sells for less than 1,500 as "worth less than a golden chicken"

  • Golden chickens are the bomb.

  • I don't know what the Colonel does to 'em, but he sure loves his chickens...

  • They can be awesome if you get the right voyage, yeah... I've been grinding MA so much the last few days that it has gone from my weakest faction by a mile to now the highest one I have. It went from 19 to 30 since Saturday.

  • @realstyli Yeah, as the only treasure that can sink you it should be more valuable.

  • @realstyli
Doesn’t make any sense, does it? Smh.

But yes, MA is so easy to rank up quickly (with a sloop) and the payout is great!

  • Let us compare:

    Golden Chicken -
Can be killed (explosive barrel, cannon fire, drowning, reckless crew mates, enemies)
Needs to be turned in on a time limit
Needs to be turned in at a specific outpost

    Chest of Sorrow -
Occasionally cries filling your ship with water.

Yeah, I think that pretty much summarizes the reason behind the payout.

  • I think most of the things you can sell, the sell price should be a lot higher. I once sold a Captains for 600 Gold. Expecting 1200.

  • @wizensquire1113 If they increase the payout, the next thing is raising prices.

  • Yesterday we sold Chest of Sorrow for +-730 gold, it's less than Captain's chest or spices or lot's of skulls.
It's rare, it's hard to transport, and it worth nothing...bad balance!

  • @symbioto Sold a Captain's chest for 565 Gold. So no, it's not necessarily less ...

  • Bad RNG, once I sell a chest of sorrows for 1500

  • @personalc0ffee Or we could have everything for free. Eliminate the grind. Grind is not fun.

Doesn't matter, won't happen. It's all about the stick length and carrot size.
Considering there is nothing but cosmetics to spend money on, that they already increased the chance for better booty on higher tier voyages and the current number of cosmetics … Nope, I don't see them increasing the payout without raising prices. And they wont do that easily either, cause it means inflation, which in turn means robbing off those who saved their coins.

Pretty much wrong...the trick in SoT is time managment. Chickens dont do anything...never has one been killed unless someone of my crew made a mistake. They dont even get stolen due to way lower payout if your not doing the specific MA voyage.

A chest of sorrow on the other hand takes 1 player out of your crew's time managment. You either put him on the ladder with it (still works) or you let him keep your ship dry. Having 1 player less in your crew can be a death sentence in the wrong moment.

If you have chickens on board, you can continue your voyage...if you have a chest of sorrow you will want to head to the next outpost = time consuming.

But then..chickens are not the fun...have you ever boarded a sloop with a chest of sorrow and droped it on their ship after killing them? Sinking ships without punching holes - awesome. If you have one onboard and are being pursued...just drop it, the enemy team will pick it up (they cant resist) and then you start the fight with them and see them get stressed by the screwed time managment. After the fight, you simply collect the chest again.

They aren't going to eliminate the grind, why would they do that? Why would they just let you have everything at once?

You'd be removing the point of playing the game and progressing.

I do know that in the past, it never had a progression system. I am unsure how the community would respond if they just removed their carrot and stick.

Thank you for explaining my point to me.

Special note about this stupid statement I keep seeing and hearing "nothing worth spending your money on, it's just cosmetics."

Literal game is built solely on this principle. Now if you want to argue that the cosmetics aren't good enough right now, that's fine.

But they aren't going to be giving you advantage, stats, or upgrades on the items.

It's time to start accepting it.

Yeah...no standing around in shiny armor in front of the bank over night you silly WoW players. Ha !

  • I think prices are down for some reason. Did alot of voyages today and a skullfort, where the stronghold chest made us only 1615 coins richer and the strongholdskull just above 2k. Even captain's chest below 600 coins! gold chickens and snakes do pay-out the best for now, sold those today at a price of 1500-1700 coins.

Anyways, the voyages remain cool and thers shiny things on beaches again :)

  • @ant-heuser-kush I agree cursed chests should be worth more, and so should villainous skulls since there are no 'cursed skulls.' I'm just saying that the payout makes sense for golden animals. These companies have always been highly unbalanced tbh.

@kustho This ain't an MMO and it sure the heck isn't WoW. This is an RPG in the truest sense of the word. You role play a pirate and you make your own adventure.

Nah, I play as a middle aged guy from the midwest.

Rare likes to stealth nerf everthing. It's getting out of hand really.

  • I could understand price fluctuations if they were somehow game-enhancing... Like if there were market trends in the game.

Maybe have little hints at outposts to let players know what's on the up and what's losing value.

Maybe a newspaper in the taverns with headlines about the price of chickens or something like that. I think that could be cool.

  • I can't believe you got over 1K for a chest of sorrows. I usually only get 872.

This is an excellent rebuttal IMO. Good job :)

  • @realstyli Yep, the chest of sorrows cries cause it knows you want to sell it, but you're the one crying after you have to sell your 3 chickens (Kentuchy, Fried and Ernesto) to the Merchant... Even harder when they were your crew's pets and all of you had a real bond you know...? That's why the merchant pays you so much...

It's one of the few issues I have with this game, and I've posted on other threads that the Chest of Sorrow ought to be worth more, say a couple thousand or something.

  • They sell for like 1000-2500, you just got unlucky and hit the lower end of the spectrum for that chest.

  • Doesn't matter, the XP are always the same...

  • @personalc0ffee But the RNG should not be so huge. I don't mind a chest being worth 800-900g or something like that. However when a chest can sell for 550-1100 is a bit silly.

I remember there were times when these chests gave 2000+....good times. Now I get 600 from captains chest if I'm lucky. Sold the sorrows one yesterday for around 700. I was alone so transporting it was a challenge.

man I really need to stop dragging my feet on that one I've been dreading it because of the perishable cargo. I just need to dedicate some time to chickens I think, MA is tougher to do solo though if friends don't want to.

  • @realstyli for some reason they made all chests alot more worthless, yet increases chances of finding better worthless chest now, and that is the funnest part of the game, idk.......seems the captains should be around 1200, and the rare ones up to 2000 kinda like spices and gold animals. Steange why they would do this.

Gold is nice and all, but I want to see the grog and sorrow chests have a massive boost to their faction rep gains as well.

  • I'm fine with this. In my world, animals are greater than material things.

  • @melbufrauma I think I've turned one in for 800+. I wasn't too thrilled with it after bailing half the way to the outpost.
