I play solo a lot. I was stopping by an Outpost and saw a mermaid. I only had some loot from a shipwreck and was about to quit playing so I decided to just stop and risk it. I jump out and head to drop off the chest. 4 guys come out, saying they are taking my ship. They shoot me once but I drop my chest and start dancing. They don't kill me. So I just kind of watch them, they say thanks, they are taking my ship. Main question is this, what is the point of this and if I quit, wouldn't my ship go too? What happens if I wanted to keep playing, would the game give me a new ship or spawn me back onto that ship?
Explain stealing a ship
@smc64 Yes, if you quit, ship goes. If you hit your mermaid, you spawn back to that ship they took - cue spawn killing. You essentially have option to fight, or scuttle/respawn.
@smc64 in this particular case, there wasn't much point in them taking your boat as you were just about to leave.
But!! If you weren't logging off, you could have offered up your boat to them and work as tgeir faithful man-servent and sail the open oceans together as a team. Sure you may not get much treasure (but maybe... just maybe they would! I know in my experiences they usually do). I think of Sea of Thieves like improv comedy, always say, "Yes and." You would be surprised how cool people are after they get to know you, even when they have you hostage.
My suggestion is... if ever you are in this position again, is to just run with it because you may make some lifelong game friends or at least, have an adventure for a lifetime.
@smc64 they might've been hoping you'd tag along or something.
but I'll share a tale of a time a friend and myself hijacked a ship.
We were at Shipwreck Bay, grabbing some treasure, when we see a sloop SLAM in to the beach. They're not attacking, we finish our business and head out. My buddy offers a very evil offer. I accept. We pass close and I sail off like any normal sloop would. I anchor in the middle of the sea somewhere and wait as my friend brings their sloop to me. He anchors next to me and we start the transfer of treasures lol. What we didn't expect was for them to notice so quickly. They spawn in on their ship and we end up having to sink them. The spawns weren't distanced yet, so they chased us for probably half an hour on their new ship, but we eventually cashed it in, unharmed.
Still my favorite moment ❤
Another reason to steal a boat is to ensure someone does not respawn nearby to harass you. If you land at an occupied outpost to unload, another member of your crew could jump on the other boat and sail it away while you kill anyone on the island. Otherwise they may just respawn on the boat, kill you, then turn in your treasure. Even better if you sail thier boat into and island or rock to cause a lot of damage so they sink and respawn far enough away that you do not have to deal with them again. I’ve sailed someone’s boat off the map for attempting to harass me. They kept respawning on the boat just to die again, but they refused to scuttle.
You don't respawn far enough away that you can't find someone and enact revenge if they do that though
Being friendly is far more beneficial. I've found it a few times and being able to go about my business while another crew goes about theirs nearby.
I even "gave" my sloop to a galleon at the end of a session once because they were nice, by friending one of them and inviting them to my game.
I think if you quit your ship would stay in the game whilst someone is on it. I say this because one time I found a sloop on an island all alone when I hopped off a galleon to drop chests back. I took the sloop on my own and sailed for about 20 minutes or so. The guy never came back to the boat and it only sank when I cannoned myself across to an island as I was a distance from the ship?

@ghostpaw I get that and that makes sense... but all 4 of what I assume was a galleon crew.
I'm not sure what you are getting at. Could you help me understand?
@smc64 next time it happens matey, just let them take it, watch them go just far enough from the shore, then scuttle so they have to swim back. Simple!
@ghostpaw I understand the tactic of taking a ship away from the outpost to safely unload. I was trying to say all 4 people were there already waiting so that wasn't what they were doing. I do appreciate the comment though. It is a good tactic. I haven't used it myself but seen it done in videos.
