Sailing West / Compass drift

  • I've noticed that in my sloop when I lock my steering due west, the ship drifts off course. Other directions on the compass don't do this and you can let go of the wheel for minutes at a time. How does everyone else cope? Any good tips?

  • I noticed too...
Ive just been correcting by going 1-3 pegs the opposite way leaving it there and it keeps the vessel straighter longer....
And a second variable can be to adjust your sails left and right it will compensate drift.

  • It happens with the Galleon also. Almost sailed my crew into the red sea last night because of it... I've just been steering more to the right to correct for the pull to the left.

  • This is caused by waves front of you. They're moving North-West to South-East. When your ship land between 2 waves, it always moves a bit. So like someone said, don't let your helm just straight, try to adjust with the right angle !

  • Indeed, the drift happens, when you break a wave, fall and hit the water with a splash. The direction of the drift is caused by your sails moved to one side, because the ship is slightly tilted. The tilt decreases in the air (as it properly should) and when you hit the water, the tilt comes back and pulls your ship to the side. It's absolutely normal and actually should work like this. Compensate on the wheel and check your map or compass from time to time.

  • I noticed this, seems to have been added recently.

I know it probably sounds odd but I kind of like it, it adds a bit more challenge and realism to sailing. You have to keep an eye on your course a lot more.

I didn't realise it was just in one direction that it happens though.
