  • @shibby-544 I've been interested in what is going to happen with Meg after the campaign. The creature will persist in the world, but how? Random attacks like the Kraken? Not sure if that would work from a balance perspective. I think a random boss fight needs to be harder than the Kraken currently is. Meg would be too difficult as a random encounter as a sloop has very little chance (other than just running) and even a 4 man crew will struggle unless they have good supplies. So if Meg attacks randomly in the current state, if you're in a sloop or not well stocked you will just have to run. That changes the random encounter from being challenging and fun to annoying. And Rare, PLEASE add a reward for defeating the Kraken or Meg. There needs to be LOOT! I figure head is great, but I've got one of those, I don't need another.

  • @shibby-544 I'm curious to see what happens as well. Random encounter would be fun, but like you said, difficult for smaller ships or solo crews. Really want to see the Meg and kraken go at it if you can trigger the two together.

  • @purefender73
I agree that the Megalodon would be too difficult for random encounters as it currently is, but that's why I think it should be reduced a lot both in size and difficulty. I think the Megalodon we fight in the HD campaign should be an exceptionally large and legendary Meg, with the normal Megs being smaller, small enough to be an appropriate challenge for a sloop...if that makes any sense.

  • so what if the meg is too difficult for sloops? i'd still really like the chance to encounter both it and the kraken as a sloop, if nothing else the tale of how i ran away from it would surely be hilarious!

  • I hope it is just as difficult as a random encounter. I also hope that the sloop will be able to activate it. Currently sloops need a galleon to activate the kraken first. Considering it is easy to escape the kraken even on a sloop it should activate on a sloop.
I want to EXPECT to lose my ship when one of the legendary beasts attacks me. Or at least barely survive. It should be hard. It should be a risk to sail in open waters away from islands. This would also make ship chases more interesting.

  • @shibby-544
Smaller size, smaller hitbox, harder to hit.

  • I've said it a few times, but I don't think it should just be a kraken like random encounter. Rare created something kind of brilliant here in getting people to work together and it should remain that way, giving you some kind of bounty every time you defeat it. It should be like a raid that randomly appears on the map once a day. Making it just a pointless random encounter in my opinion would be a huge missed opportunity and would squander the great momentum they have with the new mechanics.

Also if it's random, imagine running into it alone. They'd have to tone it down massively to make it even possible to beat it. I'm surprised though people here actually want it to be smaller? It's a megalodon.......

  • @shibby-544

I think the Megalodon is great as is.

I don't think it should be a random encounter, but should be able to be summoned anywhere on the sea (outside of the "announcement" radius if any island) by any five players stupid enough to summon it with the Shanty.

It would fall more in line with the mythos of the world that way.

As a player who typically plays solo sloop, being attacked by giant sharks at random doesn't entice me (unless outrunning them at full sail is an option). Avoiding the loss of my loot to a random galleon is stressful enough without adding a overpowered NPC to the mix...

  • @purefender73 Monetize the Meg! maybe there should be an area where it is easier to find it or a way to attract it like chum you could buy from one of the NPCs.

This would allow brave fisihing pirates to seek it out, hunt it and bathe in glory and gold! Gold being the the keyword here

Could be fun if you can summon it everywhere. Just imagine doing a skull fort with 5 people on your galleon almost losing to another galleon and then summoning the Megalodon to doom you both.

  • Has anyone from Rare actually stated what WILL happen to Meg when the event is over? Asked this a couple of times to no avail.

I know they have told us that Merrick, the unique drum, speaking trumpet, tattoos and scar will go, whilst the ship stuff stays, but what about Meg??
Hate to think she is gone for good, otherwise all that is left for us in gameplay terms is more cosmetics, not more gameplay options which, surely is the whole point of these DLC releases??

  • @shibby-544
I think that in way we need some unbalanced danger in the sea. As of right now the sea needs to be fleshed out some more and I think adding a giant shark in the water, as a random event, would be great. Yes, it would be unbalanced, but I think that would make the fear and excitement more prevalent when out at sea. To be honest I like how the Meg is now and see it as a good addition to the sea monster roster.

  • @sshteeve
The Drum, Trumpet, Tattoos, And Scars, plus the new AI threat (Meg) will be staying in the game. The developers just added a camping quest to show off the new items and enemy threat in the game. It was a little confusing the way it was stated when they did their weekly video updates, but all of this content will be staying in the game.

  • @bcdbrandon01 Thought that the Hungering Deep page made out that the trumpet and drum would be replaced by more generic, non-limited time versions?

Here it says The Hungering Deep offers time-limited campaign items such as a special figurehead, unique drum variant and speaking trumpet, plus the Hungering Tattoo Set and some scars perfect for born survivors, which surely means that those items are gone following the event?

  • @sshteeve
It means that particular set of tattoo (The shark tattoo and the shark scar) As for the drum and trumpet, that's talking about the trumpet and drum skin we currently have now (It's like the accordion skins or pistol skins) The items and concepts themselves will be in the game.

  • @bcdbrandon01 that's what i was saying before lol!
Hence me saying the trumpet and drum would be replaced by more generic, non-limited time versions? i.e. generic skins.

  • @tedakin 100% agreed on all counts. Structuring the mission to encourage cooperation worked so well it changed the entire tone of the sea.

Early GTAO freemode was basically just one big killzone because there was nothing to else interesting to do and no incentive to cooperate. Now that there are tons of heists, jobs, activities to do, and businesses to run, the game is much less violent in freemode. Not entirely un-violent, of course. But random trolls are so much less frequent than they used to be that it's almost an entirely different experience.

That is to say that pvp is fun, but as more content gets added to the game pvp will be less necessary to keep it interesting and keep people engaged.

Meg and Merrick are a great example of this. It was very well executed and Rare should take a long look a why and how they can repeat that success.

  • Me and my friend were a bit delayed in getting to do this dlc. We hung around for four hours or so this evening and couldn't find anyone to do it with. Really sad as I wanted a chance to record us killing the beast. I hope the mega stays in the game as a major threat but that's easier to summon. One galleon / two sloops maybe should be enough. Making you find a fifth player has just made the whole experience a pain for us, especially with the complete lack of there being anyway to find other people in game due to the server thing.

  • I think that shark bait cove would work well for the encounter post hungering deep. The meg guarding the island, so if you dare get close the meg will spawn, doesn't have to be all the time, will add to the suspense of it if you have a quest from there and have to risk going there, a treasure on the altar as reward for beating megaladon if it spawned. As far as other random encounters, could just have it that the meg will just surface outa ocean take a bite or ram you doing damage than vanishing beneath the waves. Build up a wariness of the ocean anywhere on the map

  • I feel it would be best as a random encounter anywhere on the map more so around ancient isles and give Athena's rep. This would be plenty incentive to get everyone to join in and help if they see a ship trying to escape or fight the beast alone.

Also a thread here where we're collecting ideas and suggestions -

  • Yes it is a random encounter, my boyfriend and I just ran into the thing while doing the throne event and turning in loot. I am uploading my video on youtube now.

  • we met the new meg yesterday

  • Random Encounter:

So me and a friend are in a lobby rn and the craziest event just happened, we were just about to get to an island to turn our treasure in when suddenly the Megalodon came out of nowhere and attacked us. Does anyone have information on this, is this ranfom encounter/ event or something else. It happened to another sloop right as we were leaving.

  • I question just how "random" the Meg mechanic is. Last night, on the way to an outpost, Meg showed up and swam around our boat. The night before, Meg showed up and followed us all the way across the map, including through a storm. Three nights before, she showed up and swam around us for almost an hour.

It seems that at some point during every session I'm in, Meg shows up and follows us for awhile. We get close to shore and she leaves, only to return when we get far enough away from shore.

  • I can attest that playing a solo crew on sloop the Meg definitely needs to have a mission tied to it and not just a random encounter, ended up losing all my progress just because I chose to play solo and I had about 4 skull bounties on me

  • What i would like to know is considering we are currently on the foresaken shores update if after defeating the megladon and skeleton crews if we still get the rewards for doing so even though both hungering deep and cursed sails have already ended
