The Hungering One! not a Megalodon

  • This is a fantasy setting with fantasy creatures, yet everyone is using the term megalodon to refer to a creature that the devs have never called a megalodon, only vaguely resembles what we believe megalodon's looked like, and has it's own name "The Hungering One".
    {Edit: Aparently the devs have reffered to it as the megalodon on twitter and their most recent youtube video title, although it's never reffered to as that in the in-game lore.}

As far as I know Megalodon's did not have 4 eyes or near so many fins. This is a shark based fantasy creature, and it breaks the air of mystery and delight to call merricks tale of the ancient "Hungering One" a megalodon. The idea here is that it is a single creature of legend, just like the kraken(not a kraken), I understand though that this might not mesh well with fighting it multiple times or different people on different servers.

I just want to encourage people to get into the lore here, a simple story of a great and powerful terror that stirs up the sea and attacks ships in the night, the hungering one.

  • Simplicity

  • people are lazy and like easy labels lol.

  • No, the Meg did not have that many eyes or fins xD but if people want to call it such, I can't see the proplem. Just enjoy the game and not worry about what people want to call this awesome beast. :-)

  • The Devs called it a Megalodon in their latest tweet

  • This game also has the Kraken and Merfolk, among other things. It wasn't supposed to be realistic to begin with.

If it was, we'd have people complaining through the roof over how the Meg is just an upscaled version of sharks already in the game.

  • @puzzlepiece197
The devs called it that in a tweet? Well now I'm not sure what to do.

Maybe the devs are wrong lol :P

Anyways, I'm going to keep calling it the hungering one but I guess it's fine to call it the megalodon but I still feel that calling it that is not in line with the lore or design.

  • @thelagmage I agree that it is not accurate but it is easier to call it that. Especially if they are acknowledging it.

  • @thelagmage Whole heartily agree with you, never was on board with calling it a megalodon as all the in-game references I've seen call it the Hungering One, but then I saw this:

    https://youtu.be/9dG0DVnB0do

Still won't call it a megalodon but don't really have much weight behind convincing others to follow suit.

  • @thelagmage The creature's design is clearly based on the Megalodon so I have no problem calling it that.

  • @thelagmage I call it Big Sardine... Is that okay with you? 😁

  • Who cares.

  • Case solved...

  • The thing is, people keep referring to him as "Meg".....

To me.... he is " The Don "... :-)

  • If you threw lipstick on a pig she’s still a pig eh??

Call it whatever. It represents a megladon. A real shark that lived many many millions of years ago. In fact they have done an excellent job and repping the Meg. It’s a HUGE shark. We got a movie about one too coming out.

Anyhoot. The named Megladon is “the hungering one” according to lore .... I can get behind something like that.

  • @shambow

I agree... now I am hungry, not just for the deep.. :-)

  • I just hate hearing people calling it "she" and naming it Meg.

Already has a name. Shut up Meg.

  • @thelagmage Actually, on the Sea of Thieves YouTube channel, the song they released is called "Summon the Megaladon"

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dG0DVnB0do

  • I call her Meggy.

  • @thelagmage
For the record science doesnt know what a meg looked like as we only have the teeth. They could have had 4 eyes and extra fins. Highly unlikely, but im just saiyan
