Now that's done there's no need to do it again. THD Yawn

  • After weeks of build-up is there any need to do The Hungering Deep again except maybe to help a mate get the achievement, scar and tattoos? Oops, I almost forgot about the rehashed shark figurehead.
Dang, they took these duplicates out of the game when people wised up and called them out on the cheap-a**e color change of eyes being the ONLY difference. So now they've put them back in thinking that we're all stupid and won't notice?

It was good to see the server full of friendly folk but how long with that last?
Once people have completed THD, it's business as usual.
With each passing hour it's going to get harder to find a friendly crew willing enough to not only refrain from firing upon you but to take you through to the end.

We invited two guys on a sloop to join our three man galleon. They said that they have NEVER met a friendly crew in the game before. That's a shame.

The megalodon was cool but now it's done and can only reappear when summoned by at least five players, I doubt that many will bother with it again.
Although my regular crew mate and his son completed THD before I woke up, they did it again for my benefit and we'll all do it again in a couple of hours when his wife joins us from her workplace.
I dare say the servers would be far less friendly by that time.

Even if we find people on these forums who would like (or need) to do it, due to the lack of server options we can never possibly team up together unless by total chance.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but all of the work gone into it was for an hour or so of peaceful interactions between two crews. It gives even less enthusiasm for the next two major events.

Get in and have fun while it lasts.... if you're not already too late.

  • in other words, don't go back to disappointing us, community. embrace the crazy fun that is racing ships and shooting bodies back and forth. it can go further than that. you can show treasure maps to each other and help that way. shanties and grog for everyone!

    gets shot

  • The quest is not what is important, this is an event, the purpose is to introduce a new mechanic of the game in a fun way for players to be engaged in.

Of course we would want next time to have a more engaging quest that has more interactivity and challenge beyond "Go to A, find B, Go to C, Find D", to improve on replayability, I mean why wouldn''t I want to replay the quest if its super fun to do, right? Especially with newbie crews.

In the end this was the Meg patch, where the new ai threat was introduced into the game along with flags, drums, megaphone and new cosmetics.

  • I think that the dynamics have now changed - it’s palpable - it’s exciting, it’s new, it’s intuitive, it’s unique and it’s something you can feel and hear.

It changes how we move through the game, people. A lot of you are missing some major points entirely.

It’s not ‘an hour’ or ‘an existing artifact’ or ‘a small dlc’ - it is a new way of playing.

99% of people are only worried today about burning through the experience - not thinking about the need for supplies, the tactical and psychological twists that present themselves, the risks, the alliances... everything.

Among all of the tactics and observations we have all made and perfected since launch - all of the complaints stopped for a while in game, peace was achieved. A new way to play is born... and it’s a heckuvalot of fun if you ask me.

And what I’ve witnessed organically, is that people let their guard down, joined up. Experienced it.

Now think... anytime, anywhere - people can be doing different things with different intentions. Always.

Supply runs, shipwrecks, gold, skull or merchant missions - they could be supplying or prepping for a skull fort run - they could be looking to eliminate you as a threat to their treasure on board, or the treasure they’re after - they could be looking to team up for megalodon, but with your guard down could sink and swim.

Any combination of these events are now in play. Many different mechanics, tactics and outcomes.

This is not a small thing - remember this.

  • @baconwrappedsac beautifully written. i didn't think it was boring because i didn't look up any of it (have yet to fight the beast). i threw my mind at it and it was the most fun since the promotional golden bananas stuff. total goonies vibe lol i can't explain it, but the trumpet makes me all giddy like a kid again and i find it hilarious when we're shouting to others. this sparked something new for me and I can't wait to sail again.

  • @urihamrayne and @BaconWrappedSAC
Valid points but as time progresses, it will be harder for others to find an accommodating crew to do it with. Then what of blood thirsty PvPers who will come only to crash the fun?
It already happens sometimes when caught by the kraken, a ship (usually the untouchable sloop) will park next to a tentacle and fire upon your ship in it's vulnerable state.
I've already heard about people camping on Shark Bait Cove just to grief others attempting to get THD achievement. The saddest part of that is we're not even 24 hours into this event.
Gawd help those who can't play until the weekend.

I don't despise PvP, it does make things more interesting, but as @Maquark pointed out, it would be a welcome breath of fresh air if others respected that area by letting people do what they want and have "their fun" too.

  • @admiral-rrrsole i do have to point out some of the sloppy partss of this questing system.

You are supposed to read dialogue from a character that says some very cryptic nonsense and then the player has to make a good interpretation of that because the npc wont repeat himself, all the while he has to be on the lookout for players that may or may not kill him while he does that? Thats silly. The quest should work like any other quest in this game, on a "paper" that progresses with your actions, so you can check on it and take your time.

Hopefully next time the npcs are a little bit more spread out and unique but with points of interest that aren't dialogue heavy and just require an action to be peformed or a challenge to be triumphed, sso that the player can be interrupted without any sort of irrverssible damage.

  • @maquark I have no problem with running it again!! Look me up!

  • sadly, agree with you. Ill probably run it a few more times to help friends and my girl. Passed that bit, its back to grinding to legend. There are no benefits so it is a waste of my time.

  • @satansenpai Perhaps not entirely a complete waste of time. It did offer new instruments and tattoos. If that's what you want. Defeating the kraken should have at least offered those.
I can also see why there shouldn't be rewards in the form of treasure as alliances would most like break and you could stand to lose the lot.

It was a welcomed break from the usual grind.

No arguments there mate. Why it couldn't have been done by Merrick handing you a riddle is beyond me.
Or, we tear out the page of each book which are placed on our radial. Only the current clue visible. Go to the next book location and tear out that page. Until all clues lead you to the beast.

Hopefully next time the npcs are a little bit more spread out and unique but with points of interest that aren't dialogue heavy and just require an action to be peformed or a challenge to be triumphed, sso that the player can be interrupted without any sort of irrverssible damage.

Yep, it would help prevent campers, even though skeletons approached as I tried to read it all. So that one shot at getting the message has to be dropped completely.

I don't believe that Rare put enough thought into their actions. They need experienced players and noobs to ask "what if?"

I'm just wondering if the Rare crew that tested this event were actually told where to go for the next clue or told what to do next, or if they were just thrown into the deep end like us? I have my suspicions that they never encountered anyone interrupting them or else the Merrick dialogue would not be a one-of chance to solve it all.

  • @admiral-rrrsole they probably playtested on a full crew, so interruptions from enemy ai would be negligible for them, but that isn't much of an excuse to ignore solo scenarios

  • @urihamrayne THANK YOU someone said it, they say to check back with the guy in the bar for new events..

  • Now that this thread has been posted eleven-million times on this forum, there is no need to post it again.

  • i love this game as it is, but having said that im done, pirate legend and have bought 90% of the cosmetics, i completed this when it launched with a 4 sloop fleet in about 2 hours, it really just didnt feel like enough, like they haven't planned enough to keep its players busy, i love sinking ships and fleeting but in a week when im done buying everything, its gonna be grief central, its all that will be left is sinking boats

  • @admiral-rrrsole I didnt mean to say the event was a waste of time. I enjoyed It. I meant to say I think replaying it is a waste of time.

  • @aod-fluid I'm sorry and realize how annoying it can be.
At the time I posted this thread I saw 2 other threads related to THD and neither of them mentioned the points I wanted to draw attention to.

I tend to not scroll through pages of listed threads therefore only seeing what's visible on the top half of the "recent" list. Even though that changes rapidly.

I don't have control over anyone that posts new threads of the same topic after I have posted mine but you can choose not to read them all.
Brace yourself for the next few weeks as more and more threads of THD will appear.

  • Hey Admiral, did Blood tell you of our journey and the jerks we encountered doing the megaladon just before you guys crewed up? The truth of the matter is that this is less of an issue with the event. I had fun. Got cool loot, enjoyed showing others what to do and organizing damn near the entire server under one flag to wreck the beast. While yes, the campaign is slim, I say wait it out. It's been less than a day since we could fight ol' Meg, and since we got our new toys. And in that time I saw what I had wanted to see since day one on this game, an entire server trashing the bar at an outpost, playing music, getting drunk and having fun. I've seen the community come together. Now, I have also seen the a******s who start s**t for no reason camp the quest giver, and make false truce just to stab you in the back for no reason, but I have to say, today, the community really rallied together and showed me that there is honor among thieves, and that my dreams of a fleet rolling through islands and amassing the largest treasure imaginable while stomping out those who dared fire a shot our way could one day happen, and spawned the new dream of a clown car sloop with multiple crews piling out to wreck a fort.

  • @djtlite No he didn't tell of everything that you've mentioned. But he was tired and walked us through it, as well as the sloop duo, very patiently.

Griff must have dropped the tune or not picked up the correct one so we sailed there and back for nothing, the first time. lol

When Dawn joins us tonight I might actually pay more attention to the clues instead of speed reading so as not to hold them up knowing Blood was getting tired.

Fair winds and happy sailing. :o)

  • I need to do it

  • A reminder to anyone reading or thinking you won't find other crews to run THD with later on. This campaign is only temporary. The shark will be removed later on or it's spawning will change so it doesn't require the quest. These are events. Maybe Rare plans on adding them back later on to kinda keep a mix up with things.

  • @abandonedtitan7 yeah if In remember correctly the shark wil later on turn into a kraken like thing. So after this event. It Will show up randomly. Anders only now you van een the figurehead.

  • I really wish there were a few things done differently with THD additions. For one, I wish that there was a reason to kill this massive, awesome boss type creature over and over again. I had hoped that it would slowly unlock rewards the more you killed it, such as the hull, sails, and figureheads. I didn't want to just hop into the game and see these awesome new ship cosmetics immediately available for purchase, I actually wanted to work towards them. I wanted to have a goal at the end of this whole thing and I just feel like it's a one and done sort of situation. Sure, if someone needs help I'm always willing, but there's just not really a point to running it more than once.

If they had some sort of a system in place where you needed to kill the meg, lets say, 5 times in order to unlock everything, that would have been awesome! But instead, you run around figuring out a riddle, which was pretty cool, and then you team up with a large crew and go fight this awesome boss and have this really great experience. But before you know it, it's over, and you've gained all there is to gain from it.

I didn't want to have to grind something out for the next week or two, but I did want at least a little more incentive to go out and slay this beast a few more times besides just having the experience again of doing it. The experience was fun, don't get me wrong, but when there's things to unlock and gold to be gained I'm probably not going to spend the time to find a large enough crew to slay this thing over and over when I could be smashing forts and slaying Athena voyages.

All in all, I give it a 7/10. Looking forward to the next DLC!

Would be fun if a couple of teeth get stuck on your ship after attacks which you could sell...make it worthwhile doing it several times.

  • @admiral-rrrsole He was on for quite a while so I'm not surprised. I had been dealing with a sinus headache all day so I understand. Long story short, we had some guys camp the quest giver at one point, server hopped, then began recruiting every ship we found while we made the trip for the journals and showed them where to go, then he hit up a skelly fort and asked the guys there to join, I even helped them finish the wave they were on and told them of our lack of interest for the fort and told them we could meet up later to do the Meg fight and the guy i spoke to seemed to agree (no mic so i was going off of emotes and the fact that he had ample opportunity to kill me). I hadn't mentioned where we were headed and wasn't going to until we were ready to leave. I see our ship getting hit by a tower trying to get into a position to park while we help so I run up thinking it was just skellies and it turns out it was one of their crew. So i called him on it, took a swing or two, but being low on health from helping on the wave of skellies earlier ended up on the ferry and our ship ended up sunk. We came back, took the fort from them, got paid and then went after Ol' Meg. That fort galleon was the only ship we had seen that wasn't there and we all got rewarded and had a laugh about it after.
