Player Stats and Rankings

  • Pirate Statistics and Rankings

    Player Stats Overview

There's no real way to tell what a pirate is made of. If only there was some sort of stat system on a players pirate card to look at that would have their stats with the games core mechanics like: navigating, gunning, carpentry, sailing, ranged combat, melee combat.
This would help immensely on giving people purpose while sailing and certain roles could be filled a lot easier when grouping.

To score the different stats they could take into account stuff like cannon accuracy, shots fired, shots hit. Sails for example could be how much and often are they aligning the sails for optimal speed/performance. Etc...

    Rankings/Stats

At each of the Inn's there should be a ranking button showing the top 100 players in each of the games core mechanics.

Two sets of rank will be used: One called "Experience" for how much someone has done a certain station/role. The other called "Performance" is how well they perform at a station/role.
The ranks in "Experience" will only go up after the player has spent a certain amount of time on that specific station and this rank cannot go down.
The ranks in "Performance" will go up or down depending on how well the player has just performed at the station they were at. (NOT WHILE USING THE STATION) Sessions that are under a certain amount of time are not scored to prevent a random demotion.

Experience ranks could be along the lines of:
    Newbie
    Novice
    Experienced
    Expert
    Legendary

Performance ranks could be different for each stat and be along the lines of:

Sword fighting - Newbie, Fencer, Duelist, Grand-Duelist, Blade master
Gunning - Newbie, Rifleman, Marksmen/Markswoman, Sharp-shooter, Master Gunner
Cannons - Newbie, Soldier, Cannoneer, Veteran Cannoneer, Artillery Master
Sailing - Newbie, Seafarer, Shipmate, Veteran Seafarer, Wind rider
Carpentry - Newbie, Craftsperson, Laborer, Ship Mason, Ship Artisan
Bilging - Newbie, Bilge Mouse, Bilge Rat, Bilger, Bilge Master
Navigating - Newbie, Helmsman, Navigator, Veteran Helmsman, Master Navigator
Battle Navigation - Newbie, Experienced, Conqueror, Warmonger, Vanquisher

    Player Portrait

Players could visit an easel at an outpost to customize their pirate card's portrait. They could choose to alter their stance, change face expression, choose what weapon/item to hold, choose what to wear, choose a pet, and finally choose a background.

  • @wajuwanmekill not bad ideas at all im in!

  • @wajuwanmekill this may be a bit complicated and cause some issues with the social aspects of the game. A ranking system may bring some benefits and immersion to the game but one such as this could be problematic as it may isolate some players and cause simple dislike from others because of how convoluted it would be having a ranking for every game mechanic. Perhaps if a few of the features you suggested were bundled up it would be easier to follow.

  • @dcr-lt-kanada Yes that's very true. I don't think SoT will run into that too often cause of the built in mic feature and also it depends on what the average stat is that everyone achieves... But think about this if your going on some end game voyage. Are you gonna want to take the rank 50 pirate legend who is ranked newbie is all his stats or the Expert/Ship Artisan who could be of great use on any of your voyages and future voyages. Now I personally would even add someone like this because he is a great carpenter and would be of great use. Yes it could cause some people to shoo off others with bad or low stats but that's why most of us play games to have fun, get better, watch yourself improve overtime. This could be a great way to show how much better you've gotten rather than the current this is how much you grinded to pirate legend. Lastly do you honestly want someone giving you orders if he's much worse than you or if someone steering your ship is not the best and there's someone that's much much more qualified on the ship.

  • @wajuwanmekill Usually after playing for a few minutes you can instantly tell whether or not you'll want to take order from someone or not due to their sailing skills or lack there of. A ranking system may work in the game just not that particular one. It needs to be more balanced and less punishing. Especially since some of the working of the ship or a team effort, how would that be calculated? Would a master navigator lose rank because he smashes into a rock due to someone putting the sail in his face? or maybe his controller just dies. A system where a ranking of experience that's tied to achieving certain goals or accomplishing specific task would be better. Maybe you go up in rank after gaining a certain level and then taking a test where you demonstrate what a pirate at that level should know. I've given it some thought so I don't have a definite answer yet on how a good ranking system would fit in the game but I'll post when I do. I just know the one you're suggestion just needs a little work if it's going to fit the kinda game SOT is. It's not a bad idea though.

These tiring "who-has-the-greatest" competitions... not interesting at all, not interested at all.
    They would destroy the game.

No... they wouldn't. How dramatic. Players that want them can enjoy them and players like me can ignore them.

My gut is that it becomes almost impossible to ignore stats. When I started playing world of tanks, for instance, I was purely interested in shooting and killing other tanks. Then I noticed the vast array of stats and it draws you in. It’s a stat tracking Goliath. It’s all the game is about.

Stats are great... but I wouldn’t want them, as you don’t it seems, in SOT. It’s what sets the game apart. The sense of freedom and not chasing anything is wonderful. But if you start adding stats - people will start to track them, and I believe the game will lose more than it gains.

  • It would be interesting if it pertained to the server you were currently one and all the players currently on it.

  • @tyburn-ketch I am a competitive person at heart and a total achievement junkie. The current "stats" that the game shows on the Xbox such as miles traveled and chests cashed in will compare you to your friend's list and I've hit #1 on each category besides the merchant one. If they added in other stats in game, it would be a whole new level of competition.

People like me would thoroughly enjoy it, but I can see how it would be a deterrent for others. Especially for those just starting out.

    yes, it would.

    Thoughtful necro.
