The trumpet and current Voice Chat

  • This is a bit of a suggestion (Though perhaps also already an unknown feature from Hungering Deep), but also a question.

I love the idea of the Voice Trumpet as a mean to broadcast to other players... But:

    • Since I've started player the game, I have been on the game's voice chat perhaps once or twice. I always keep a Push to Talk key available just in case, but most of the people I play with do not.

And so I wonder, is this the same for others? I mostly use discord with PC players, or XBOX party chat otherwise. Being in the local game chat is simply to big of a disadvantage against crew who aren't. And so I wonder...

    • Do you use in game chat which can be heard by others?
    • Will the arrival of the trumpet mean that in game chat will become private to the crew, while the Trumpet is used to broadcast to other crew?
    • If so, would you switch over to in game chat?
    • If not, will you remain in your own discord / Party chat?

I know I would make the switch. If it wasn't for the strategic advantage, I would have no issue being in the game local chat, and would love to use the new item to talk with other crew.

But if it otherwise remains as is, I'll stick to discord, as I do not want other crews to have the upper hand on me due to private chat.

  • @verminpup My biggest reason to why I use Xbox Party chat and not in-game chat is.. in-game voice chat is just bad at the current moment. Half the time, my crewmates sound choppy, very low, breaking in and out, etc. But once we all jump into xbox party chat, all of those problems are gone.

Another reason, like you mentioned earlier, the opposing crew can hear me, at all times. I am telling my crew when I'm boarding the other ship, where I am, telling my crew to fire the cannons, or stop and repair. All the information that would hurt us if the other crew could hear us.

If the speaker-trumpet made it so the other crew could not hear me unless I used it.. it would encourage me to possibly use in-game voice chat more often.

I WANT to be able to communicate with other crews, I want to.. but the trade-off is just to great for them to be able to hear us mid-fight at the current moment.

  • This is how I see it.

Proximity chat is still the primary. If you within proximity of other players, they can hear you. Your crew will hear you no matter where you are.

My guess is the trumpet will either:
    A. Expand the current proximity chat to a wider radius, or...
    B. When using the trumpet, your voice is broadcast server wide.

I really hope it just expands the proximity radius, because pirates could abuse a server wide broadcast and there would be nothing other crews could do except mute all other crews indiscriminately.

This is what I hope does not happen. Proximity chat is just not a very good way of handling this.

In a world where people cannot use private chat, sure, it would be interesting if we'd have to be careful what we say. This just isn't the case though, and as such, all of the incentive to use private chat are there.

Also, if the goal was immersion:

    • why can a crew hear me while I'm under water about to blow up their ship.
    • Why can my own crew still hear me if I'm away?
    • Why can I hear people on another ship while on mine?

I really hope this is changed to:

    • Voice chat: Private and only your crew can hear you anywhere.
    • Trumpet: Voice is broadcasted on a reasonable distance so that you may speak with other crew for fun, but also with other ships for tactical and diplomatic reasons.

I can't really come up with any argument that would make me want things otherwise.

  • I am usually in teamspeak, no matter what game I'm playing. I have the advantage of being on PC, so I can do both in game and TS without issue. I don't think any changes to the in game chat would change the way I do this. I just prefer to have a channel out of game to chat in most of the time, especially if another friend pops in but maybe isn't playing the game we are.

  • The shouting trumpet just extends the range of proxy chat, so other nearby ship will be able to more easily hear you while you're using it.

Your voice won't be broadcast server-wide; but it will make communicating with other ships that are reasonably close by much easier.

  • @blam320 So what I usually do, if in a larger galleon crew is be in party chat with them, mute them in game and use the proximity chat when dealing with the outside world, which I do constantly. This way we don't get an echo when our crew talks in proximity and we can still plan and scheme behind the scenes.

I am insanely excited for the horn so that I can communicate with ships I see in the distance and be heard a bit more clearly. This is great when I am in the mood to be friendly and help out, or to be crazy and let my insane intentions be known.

  • Everyone assuming the trumpet is actually for YOUR voice.

What if the trumpet just gives you a new context chat wheel which has a wider ranges than typical chat wheels.

Personally I'd prefer that as I don't need anyone yelling BS at me from across the sea.
