Initiating Combat with your Crew

  • The point of this topic is below the story.
I usually fight with strategy. Most people that PVP i find, button mash. I keep myself steady unless they are using a blunderbuss (Huge respect to those who try fighting without the blunderbuss)

I love when i meet someone who uses strategy like me. I once met someone at Daggertooth, we were civilized, passed in our loot. Drank and played some shanties. Then he wanted to initiate a proper sword duel, noticed he hit the block button several times and took a swing in the air.

I did the same, the fight was not button mashing rage. We were careful, he was very good and I could keep up. Dodging while blocking, swinging and hearing the ''ching!'' rather then an empty swing through the air or constant swinging from both sides.

It was like one of those epic coordinated sword fights from Pirates of the Caribbean. Won the duel and set sail to find some treasure.

Later that day I encountered that same person. This time we used our pistols but it wasn't just a wild shootout, since his crew mate had a mic, we set up one of those old fashioned pistol duels. Standing back to back we took 10 steps away from each other, turned when given the word and shot, one shot aloud. I haven't touched up on my skills using a pistol much, but after he hit me, we continued the same way. He killed me afterwards, pretty darn good he was.

After that I didn't see those pirates anymore. It got me thinking, it would be pretty cool if we could initiate PvP with our own crew?

There could be a menu where your crews usernames are listed, you want to challenge the Captain and take over, and give orders? Select him in the menu and request to challenge your crew mate. Being in the same crew and communicating with each other before the match could make for some amazing duels. Of course the person challenged can accept or deny the challenge.

You could train your crew to get better at fighting with swords and aiming with pistols. Blunderbuss is pretty much straight forward, I think that's the go to weapon for people boarding. But training amongst your crew? That could be a lot of fun!

As i mentioned in the story, people like that are pretty rare to come by. They were respectful and fun to interact with. Not only do I think requesting combat from amongst your crew would be fun, but I think it would encourage more players over time to have awesome duels with people they meet on the Sea, rather then button mashing.

Keep in mind: This does not effect open PVP with other Pirates. That should always remain as it is now.

So when it comes to Pistols. I think maybe the pistols could be one shot kill for a head shot, or two shots. Amongst the crew anything can be organized to have fun, it can be controlled amongst the crew.

Amongst friends, it would just be a fun duel. Role play wise, it would be a challenge, maybe to take the position of anothers role as Captain, or hell, if you love role play, whoever wins gets a promotion from deck hand to first mate. First mate could end up later challenging the Captain. That's just a thought for you really if you like role play which i think is a big part of this game.

As for being defeated in the duel? Yeah for any PVP you would end up on the flying dutchman but I think after our screen goes black, you end up in the brig of your ship. It would be like you lost the challenge and that's where they drag you after (not literally dragging.) So they just release you after the duel.

I think this could be a lot of fun. If you have anything to add on to it, be my guest. I don't consider any idea 'stupid'. There's good and bad ideas, but I like hearing them all. Fire away!

  • Could also go to your knees and plead like after a duel in WoW.

Really good idea to train your crew if you have tips and tricks and it would improve the community overall.

Most people not confident in PvP (re: all the solo sloops that complain about wanting a PVE server) will avoid PVP and never improve the ability to defend themselves.

This would add another angle to the game, encourage more player interaction and give you something to do with your crew on long voyages that's not playing one of 4 "shanties".

  • Definitely think the game can use a "challenge" feature. It would help players gain valuable PvP combat experience and would also give players something to do when sailing from one island to the next as it can get pretty boring when on a low populated server.

  • @wizensquire1113 Yes. Yes yes. Yes yes yes yes.

IDC how they do it, borderlands style, how you mentioned, it doesn't matter, I really really want a duel mechanic for crew mates :D

  • to me this would work well with the Tortuga concept. a pre server clearing house, ala destiny's main planet, where pirates could initiate duels, join in drinking (and dueling) contests, hone their swordplay, and much more.

  • @squallycircle7 I'm not to familiar with how Destiny works, but it does sound nice though if I could have more strategy based duels with people outside the crew as well. Unsure what you meant by the pre server clearing house?

Personally, I don't want to see any location on the map closed off to openly free PvP. Nor would the duel requested to another crew mate protect the crew from other Pirates attacking, but I don't think that would be a problem, it would just be wise not to initiate a duel with an incoming pirate.

  • destiny used a large common area where players would log into prior to joining into their particular pvp or pve servers. at this location you are free to purchase weapons, accessories, missions, or just work on your dance moves. in our case it would also serve as a place for random crewmates to meet, where they could then set sail together. this would allow them to team up with players looking for the same experience (ie pvp, forts, or missions for a particular faction), and to find others to hone their fighting skills against in practice areas. once your crew was set, or designated as random, you would set sail into your server.
