Getting chased when you don't have loot...

  • Seems to be a common complaint.
" Galleon chased me for almost an hour and i didn't even have loot"

Well what better time to learn how to take down a Galleon then when you don't have much to lose?
Line him up behind you, jump off your boat, board theirs and drop their anchor. Zig zag and take some shots. Drop a powder keg behind you. Head into some rocks where it's hard to follow. Pull your own anchor if they are catching you and head the other way as they go by. If it's a really skilled Galleon crew then none of this may work but if it's some randoms it could be enough to get them off your back.

Practice repairing, shooting and sailing. Try something. Anything. You never know what might work. I have a couple other tactics that I use that I don't want to share but just be creative. Running is not the answer. Teaching them a lesson is.

  • l**o 100% agreed. Most of the complaints here make no sense in context of anyone who has played SoT more than 40 hr.

  • If we get followed we drop all the [Mod edited] loot in the sea behind us with a powder keg, it works every time those idiots buy it and sail right into it. While they panic trying to fix my buddy gets on there ship and cuts them to pieces. End of following ship.

  • Predators don't like prey that fights back. Sometimes if you show you can be aggressive they will back off. Worst case scenario is you get sunk but learn something in the process.

  • Agreed! It's when you get chased with loot that you need to worry, and even then it's sometimes a judgement call - is it worth trying to escape, or shall we just turn and face them? When we're actually fired on the red mist descends and we have to fight - often unsuccessfully, but you make steady improvements. But sailing empty is when you can throw caution to the wind and try out new ta tics. There is literally nothing to lose, but a lot of experience to be gained, even 1v4.

    Running is not the answer.

    Oh, I don't know.

It's been workin' great for me.

  • They don't know that you don't have loot, and honestly, if someone runs or goes hard in fighting, it will make them think that you have loot and they may very well play more aggressive, the only reason they'll turn away is if they have loot or they aren't stupid and realise they'll never catch you... But what they said is true, no better time than when you have nothing to lose to practice getting people off your tail

  • @trickrtreat01 Please tell me the tactics you don't want to share. Please tell me your secret!

    I promise I won't tell anyone! :)

  • How those who complain about being chased fail to see this opportunity is beyond me. Like everything, getting better at pvp and at least defending yourself requires practice.

  • When I am getting chased when I have no loot then its just time to toy with whoever is chasing me lol. I try to have fun with it.

  • This. All day, this. My personal favorite is to ram while solo, or have your teammate cannonball them while you camp the galleon's bottom level. You don't even have to be winning, just distracting enough until it's too late for them. And trust me, every galleon deserves it and will not hesitate to 4v1 camp you. They're bullies, tear them apart.

  • @trickrtreat01 I have to agree with your OP.
We are usually placid and laid back but when chased we lure them into cutting corners to catch up and in-line behind us almost in our wake (water trail) if the game actually showed a ship's wake.
Sometimes we even have to resort to making deliberate "mistakes" with sail adjustments. lol
All the while the helmsman quietly says "that's it, fall in behind us" like a spider coaxing the fly into it's web.
Then one of us discretely jumps into the water (either with or without a powder keg) with the intention to either explode their hull or drop their anchor.

It may not always work, we've been spotted in the water and avoided before but it's always worth a shot.

Another tactic is to partially go around a large island until the ship is out of view then quickly turn back and face them head on. Of course this method is best when you have a fair lead on them but not enough for them to cut to the other side of the island ahead of you.

  • Thanks to closed crews, if your being chased in a sloop solo and have that second spot open shoot me an invite! I eat pursuing pirates for breakfast haha!

Serious note, if you have no loot fight. Even sinking is better than wasting time running. A new spawn and boat in a new area is a win plus you get the thrill of trying to fight! I honestly never start fights, but if I have little to no loot and you chase me, it will not be worth your time ;)

  • I play completely non-confrontational. Shoot when being shot at. Run when being attacked. I can and do fight back for practice sake but usually i'm not interested in it and much more interested in finding a way to troll my predator.

"Waste my time and I'll be sure that you don't get the experience you were after" - unless you are really after chicken cages and one round of supplies...

Some people are just in for the kill. Most of the time I think its personal satisfaction at the engagement which is fine. I make sure that I get the best out of it too. Its good practice.

@combatxkitty I like to toy around with people too. I'm never attached to my loot so I'll red sea my loot and put it on display as I sail in if the chaser is an idiot.

I shouldn't have to learn how to grief to deal with griefers. If someone doesn't want to fight you should mind your own business and leave them be. Fighting someone who doesn't want to fight is griefing buddy. You only chase them because you know they don't want to fight therefore its an easy win, but you'd probably run once they fight back.

  • @trickrtreat01 Amen. Happens to me as well. I find running like you have treasure helps lure them in. After that. Harass them till they scuttle or you send them off with cannon fire. My practice has come from galleons shooting first. Then it's on. If I think I'll sink I start tossing loot overboard. Make em work harder. Argh

  • @captcrunchbeard pick your fights carefully. Usually the ones starting fights are noobs. That's when the hunter becomes the hunted. All pirates should know how to handle ocean battles. After all it's part of being a pirate.

  • Hit your anchor, vote to scuttle your ship and everyone dive really deep until you die. They will be confused, lost and won't even having the satisfaction of battle. then you all spawn elsewhere with a new ship.

  • Of course, that is only when I have nothing. If I do have any type of treasure, then I will fight to the last breath and send them to see Davy Jones!

  • @captcrunchbeard I have the feeling you do not really grasp the core concept of the game try to get loot anyway you can, either pve or pvp.

I get enjoyment out of both however if i know a ship has no loot (just left an outpost for instance) i wont even approach them, however when i think they do that loot is not theirs just yet until they sold it and it is up to me And if not solo my crew to do what we can to get a hold of that treasure you are transporting.

I wont keep following you and if i think it is not a worthwile effort (time vs reward) ill just head my merry way.

I think this post has a reasonable outlook on the situation, try to get better at every aspect of the game and youll be a legend in no time, just because you are able to get more loot or able to defend your loot more efficiently.

Now and then i get sunk with loot and the only thing i get salty about is when the game decides to keep me in a loading screen for ages while respawning or if me and my crew make stupid mistakes that make us lose said loot.

  • I agree with a lot of the comments, if you have nothing to loose have a go or attempt to make friends. Sometimes it turns into a positive experience.

  • On being attacked I think I am on 96% getting killed 4% win, for now. Its a game and a new one to me. If I won all the time I would soon get bored. Every Encounter I learn by mine and their mistakes. I do probably 70% loner on a Sloop and believe me, never miss a chance of picking up a powder keg. I have only one suggestion and zero complaints, the Barpersons looks should change the more you Drink!, Just like real life.

You poor lost soul. You should be sinking ( them) instead of sulking.

  • I see plenty of people complain about being chased when they have no loot.

Here is my take, my crew and I will chase you, we want easy loot. The problem is, people run, they run away doing all of these kind of maneuvers making it LOOK like to us, that yes, they definitely have loot and are trying their hardest to not get sunk.

Only to sink them, and think "wow.. they really wanted to waste 40 min of their time running, when they had nothing to protect"

Half the time, when we are fighting a ship, when we board a ship and notice no loot to steal, we'll just leave, we won't continue fighting, and then you'll be on your merry way.

However, if you make us chase you for 30min and you had NOTHING, we will sink you and mercilessly kill you repeatedly.

In the end... don't want to get chased? Don't make it look like you are doing everything to protect loot you have.

  • @BamBam-BM
I hope we meet on the open seas.

You would be chasing me for a couple of hours (until you gave up) or I'd scuttle and exit to leave you with an empty pig cage.

I'm pretty much a pirate legend, I am creating my own minigames :)

He says this with regards to a pirate game. Interesting.

You respond with ad hominem attacks? Really? If I pursue a ship it is because I want to take their treasure. Is my conception of pirating inconvenient for you? I'm under no obligation to "mind my own business." If you wish me to not take your treasure, stop me. In fact when I chase a ship I hope they turn around. I hope it is an epic battle. I hope it is intense. I hope my wins are hard fought. Because even if I lose, that treasure will be that much more valuable to the victor. Me run away once a ship fights back? Don't count on it.

  • I don't plan on changing the original look of my ship.

Originally I had made a Pirate, reached 30 even but wanted to change up the look. I know the real grind is 40-50 so now I'm back to 30 even with an appearance I like. Though I like to keep the look of my ship, I have a lot of experience and Galleons or sloops who see the plain look as I'm sailing think me as an easy target.

One time I had a Galleon on my tail, I raised my own sails but didn't drop the anchor since I had enough time and space between my ship and the Galleon to jump off my ship with an explosive barrel and swim, dropped it in the water. Made it onto their latter just moments before the front of their ship impacted with the barrel. Killed the captain, grabbed a captains chest from the captains quarters and jumped off. Luckily I don't think the Captain was using a mic so their reaction wasn't instantaneous.

I dropped their anchor before I jumped off with the chest of course. Didn't take long until they were rushing to the anchor after boarding up the damage, and by the time I dropped their anchor i was in safe swimming distance to my ship. Then I sailed away.

One of my favourite tactics, more people then you think would try and chase a ship with no cosmetics while they already have loot.

You, sir, are a devious and cunning scallywag. My respects to you and your crew. ;)

  • @ardent-38 thank you, I just don’t like being followed
