If we ever get to name out ships I would like it to be that when you create yours no one else in the game can have that name like a gamer tag or the infinite pirate generator and b/c all four people on the ship would have there own names they could vote for which one that they want to use so people could gain notoriety, plus customizable flags would help with this. You could see a ship in the distance notice there flag and that it’s a dangerous pirate and if that doesn’t tell you the nameplate would when you get on board. This was just one of the thoughts I had that I would really like to see in the game.

I doubt this will happen. I could not even name my Pirate really.

And rolling the dice over and over until you don't have the power left to care anymore I dunno if you can call that true choice. ;)It is also not helping to think about how you are not seeing your character outside of emotion-animations. ;)

or " Antifa on the Seas "and otherwise untasteful b******t that would hurt the immersion even more. ^_^
Naming your ships would also obligate the Developers to invent another namingsystem that randomly shuffles stuff together.

With ship captaincy this could easily be a thing, ship captaincy is on the way but has been delayed due to the upcoming content updates.
Maybe like in Monster Hunter titles. By doing some events you can unlock adjectives or names (and have basic prepositions) so you can combine them.
For example, every milestone of every faction can give you one, and you can get some by reaching certain goals (number of skelletons killed, skull fort keys used...)
So you can make your own name using 2 or 3 words. So your ship's name won't be unique, but you can customize it.
And even, there might be temporary events with their own lore that reward you with special words related to them...

I'm scared for captaincy, I hope its not one step forward 2 steps back. There was talk that only the captain will be able to customize the boat so the host. This will suck for us that all bought different customization options and like to mix it up.
@ve111a There certainly is a lot to be ironed out but I believe it was supposed to just default to the "captains" last customizations with the option to change out once a session has started.
But nothing concrete has been announced yet. I personally am looking forward to it since I always forget to customize (mainly because of the effort it takes to remember)

Its more likely that they will add a naming system for ships that uses pre-existing words that you can mix and match to make your own ship name for the session. Example:
Colour:
- Black
- White
- Red
World:
- Sea
- Island
- Reef
- Deep
- Ocean
- Moon
Objects:
- Sword
- Tree
- Crate
- Rock
Concepts:
- Dread
- Fear
- Glory
- Conquest
- Destruction
Picking some of these terms and forming the: The Dreaded Red Moon.
I'm not exactly sure how it should be implemented. Maybe just like the colors for the boat. And you can apply it at the ship customization chest. People don't seem to fight a lot over the paintjob so whatever. You just have to buy the placard (they can be themed like the hull and sail) and your name has to be submitted to be, y'know, checked for profanity and offensiveness. But I think you should be able to decide your own name. They don't have to be unique or anything. Who cares if there's 546 "Enterprise"s or "The Queen Ann's Re-Revenge"s
I've sailed with so many Sailor aoprejgqs and Mystic Captain XxMLGN00BSL4Y3Rs I don't think it would really break immersion MORE to just see the nameplate over the door read "USS DUMB PUNCHER" or "Sweet Mama's Chilli" or "Onewordshipname"
