NPC Voice Acting

  • Be I the only one that thinks Rare wandered around their office and plucked random employees to voice their NPCs? The quality (in terms o' talent) be absolutely terrible.

Voice acting is a skill. It no be enough to just stick someone in front o' a microphone an' say 'read these lines'.

While not a priority, I sincerely hope we get new voice talent at some point.

  • Voice acting can take a number. We need content

  • After enduring 50 snake bites on Crooked Masts, I really, really, want to hurl a bucket of snakes over that Merchant Alliance girl at Daggertooth :')

  • @awesomecoreusa I actually think it's kinda cool that the studio decided to use their own staff who worked on the game. Considering there is no actual cinematic or extended speech from the NPC characters, I don't really think it's an issue.

Maybe if they add some kind of story mission or larger speaking parts for the NPCs down the line, but while all the say is "Hello my lovely" or "You look familiar" I don't think it matters, no?

  • Meh. I never really noticed. I mean it didn't come off fancy but to be honest the voice acted parts are so minimal I didn't really focus in on it. I'm used to playing games with no voice acting so doesn't really jump out at me.

  • Better (and more) voice acting is desperately needed in SoT.

Additionally, NPC characters need more expressive animations. Everything feels far too static. Merchants/NPCs feel like glorified vending machines rather than actual people that populate the game world.

  • @williamherschel if you played other MMOs (besides Destiny) then most NPCs are like that. Barely say anything or react.

  • @thewolfman321 It's not an 'issue', no. It's not something that ruins an otherwise perfect game. [hah] but I find it a staggeringly bad decisions from a professional games company.

It jumps out at me e'ery time I play an' I find myself thinking 'why would you do this?'

  • I agree with this it just seems like blah liners. pretty annoying but that voice acting for the hungering deep is a different story, loved it

  • @thewolfman321

In my opinion, even the NPCs in Destiny are a little too static. It’s definitely a trope/characteristic of modern games that have RPG elements, but it just seems like such an obvious deficit, especially in games like SoT where your supposed to feel a sense of place, history, and context.

  • @awesomecoreusa That's fair enough I guess man. Just never bothered me. Want more content first though aha.

@WilliamHerschel yeah that's fair enough I guess. I have yet to play an MMO that has dynamic actions and voices. Even immersive games like Skyrim miss this mark, with NPCs tending to look and sound bored and upset that they were included in the game. Maybe that's just how voice acting works now xD

  • @williamherschel
I don't care if there is voice acting or not though I get that is the way of things now. Not missing it but wouldn't complain if it showed up.

While I agree with the rest of your statement I almost wonder if this was sort of by design. A lot of things they want to do/have done seem to indicate their desire that we the player are the world population. Let the npc's sit in the background while we stand out as the 'living' element.

Not saying it necessarily works that way as of yet(could be argued either way) but just a theory.

  • I think they're fine, you can't really expect them to hire professional talent for a few brief lines of dialogue.

  • Agreed! It would eat too much into a budget... and Rare have previous experience and have always pulled off in-house efforts for voice and sound effects.

  • @thewolfman321 oh sweet Triton no.... I don't want better voice acting over a new 3 man ship or more variety to the game. But if Rare want to throw it in there, like the change to the health meter or the ability to pass bananas... I, for one, would appreciate not having to hear "you like chickens?" e'er again... I swear I am going to cannon that jetty back to the stone-age...

  • @prodigy-burns / @Musicmee

I can, and do, expect Rare (a Microsoft Company) to hire professional voice talent for a few brief lines of dialogue.

I'm not saying e'ery voice needs to be a unique talent. An' ye don't need to cast celebrities in the roles. But hire a half dozen talented voice actors an' have them churn out multiple characters each.

Is it not obvious that budget is an issue with this game? I know Microsoft are Goliaths - I’m not so sure Rare are.

Trust me. Voice actors make a fortune! :)

And in all honesty I’ve heard much, much worse than that dude in the ‘teaser’.

  • @awesomecoreusa I honestly don't see much that can be achieved by a change in voice talent given how brief the lines of dialogue are. It's just not something I think many will notice or care about imo.

  • @tyburn-ketch dude in the teaser be fine.

It's the quest givers an' shop keepers I be talking about. They be just terrible...

I honestly don’t mind those much either. They serve their purpose.

  • @awesomecoreusa

Voice acting is great imo, lovely british accents.

  • @xixxo123 as someone who also has a British (Scottish) accent... I envy you for being able to enjoy them.

  • @awesomecoreusa

Still beats fables "Chicken chaser" haha

  • @clumsy-george Lots o' games take lots o' time to develop. An' it's not like we're talking 'bout some indie studio trying to scrape by an' the best they could do was to ask their friends to lend their voices.

A big budget game from a big budget studio should not be giving the voice casting to their staff in recognition. That's what the credits (an' pay cheques) are for. An' it no be like the easter eggs scattered around the game that actually add to the experience by makin' the world feel lived in. The bad vocal acting detracts from the game (in my opinion, I grant thee).

  • Wait.... what voice acting? Serious question.

  • @rdizz voyage givers an' shop keepers all say something when ye first engage them, an when ye leave.

More like sound bytes than acting really....

  • I do agree.
Some of it is okay, but I think at least having fully voiced dialogue would add to the immersion.
Obviously though I don't think it should take priority over everything.

Hell though, I don't mind taking a train to go record some lines, if they're really low on people to do it!
