Why can't it be both. the original finding of dinosaur fossils lead to the idea of dragons, and the when they found the jaws of megalodons they attributed it to a leviathan (not sourced. is speculation) i have no problem with the leviathan being just a bigger, scarier shark with some added mechanics (summoning, sacrifice, etc.) But in the end the creature will at least be shark like. I mean all the shark bites on the guy, his tattoo, the almost certainty that the shark cosmetics for the ships will now be added back in...
