Anybody know how to get the in game chat to recognise and use my Shure SM57 AUX microphone?

  • I've tried everything I can think of and I can't get it to work.

I have a Creative Sound Blaster ZXR soundcard and a good Shure SM57 plugged into it via the AUX sockets. I've set my Windows 10 sound settings to use it, I've set the Xbox app to use it. I ticked yes when the game asked me to use the default microphone. I've gone into 'privacy settings' like the support article suggest and ticked the appropriate boxes, and it still doesn't work in game.

I also have a stick microphone plugged into the normal mic socket of the sound card and I can't get this to work in game either.

The only mic the game seems to recognise is the one on my Turtle Beach headset via Bluetooth and this one is rubbish. Not only does it not sound great but it is also very quiet and I can't turn it up in Windows settings like I can the other mics.

Idealy I'd really like to use my SM57 via the AUX input as I do on Discord as this is a great sounding mic and I can adjust the volume on it.

Any help and/or suggestions on how to fix it would be great. If nobody can help then I guess I'll send a support ticket request for help but I am sceptical if they will give me a working solution.

Somebody that is good with PCs, PLEASE help me?! :*(

  • Try changing it on the xbox app and also change the default microphone to that wanted microphone.

  • @themuckypaw do you also have onboard soundcard? did you try if it works pluged into that one? and also if you do have that onboard sound, do you have it dissabled in bios?

    edit:
also enabling crystal voice seems to work for some people with sound blaster mic problems.

  • @sir-lotus I'm not sure if my onboard sound is disabled in bios, it probably is, but I'd rather not use this as the Sound Blaster is a good card and it works with everything else. I can record guitar and vocal with it on other software and it works fine with Discord. I'm pretty sure it's the game that's not recognising it for some reason, and it doesn't want to recognise the stick mic plugged into the normal mic socket on the sound card either. It's really frustrating. :(

I will double check my bios settings but I doubt that's the issue. Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • @mad-jack-ketch Done both of those already. :(

  • @themuckypaw np, hope some of it helps. Also not sure if you've seen it, but i've edited the post with one more suggestion about crystal voice.

  • @sir-lotus Yea, I'd read that already somewhere and I have it turned on but again the game doesn't want to work with the 'normal' mic, i.e the stick mic plugged into the normal mic socket of the sound card or the AUX mic. It's driving me crazy that I can't get either to work and that the game only recognises the Turtle Beach mic via Bluetooth.

  • @themuckypaw damn. i have no idea then. Sorry. Maybe someone smarter has a better idea?

Or perhaps it's time to submit a support ticket. Hopefuly they'll help.

  • @themuckypaw
Have you tried unplugging it & plugging it back in?

  • @sir-lotus You just gave an idea to try something. I went and checked my bios and my HD audio was 'enabled' which I think means the onboard audio, so I've disabled this as I am wondering if the game is looking at this as the default mic and not seeing my Sound Blaster card because of it. Now that I've booted my PC back up Xbox app is not showing anything for mic or speakers, which is a bit odd, as if it doesn't see my Sound Blaster card. I'll test a few variations and see what happens.

  • @logansdadtoo lol, sorry for laughing but I guess you work in IT support?! ;)

  • @sir-lotus Oh, I haven't done anything, but all of a sudden Xbox app is showing mic and speaker options again, so fingers crossed, I'll test it and see.

  • @themuckypaw
    Was being serious!
It's a well known solution to a lot of audio/mic issues in SOT & Xbox App.
Start app, disconnect/reconnect headset & mic & try again.

  • @sir-lotus Partial success, the game now recognises the ordinary mic that is plugged into my Sound Blaster, and at least I can adjust the volume on this one so people can hear me. The quality isn't great but it's better than the Turtle Beach headset one. Now I'm going to play about with the settings to see if I can get it to recognise my better AUX mic.

Thanks for the input @Sir-Lotus, if you hadn't suggested the bios settings I would never have thought of it. :)

  • @themuckypaw np, I'm really happy it helped at least partially. :D Hope you'll figure out the rest of it.

  • hmm Aux I/P's on sound cards are not designed or intended to work with mics (without another bit of equ
ipment inbetween) You basically need a preamp

  • @chalkyhotdog he said he's using it in discord already, so i assume he has an amp.

  • @sir-lotus experience has taught me never to asume anything lol

  • @sir-lotus I did it, the AUX mic is now working. I'm so happy to finaly be able to use my good mic. :))

I can't thank you enough. In fact if you're not Pirate Legend yet and want a Legendary voyage, add me on the xbox app, send me a message and I'll drop a voyage for you and your crew to do. :)

My xbox name is same as in the forum 'themuckypaw'

  • @themuckypaw that's really awesome to hear. And thanks for offer, i'm not a legend yet, but my xbox died, so i'm offline for at least one more week. :D

  • @sir-lotus Sorry to hear that, but I'll leave the offer open. When you get your xbox fixed, add me, message me, and I'll do it then. Cheers. :)

  • @logansdadtoo Sorry, I didn't mean to sound cheeky, but if you have ever watched one of my favourite TV shows "The IT crowd" you'd understand the humour. Plus it's also a line from an old IT joke too. I am quite good with tech stuff so yea, it was one of the first things I tried. I as getting very frustrated by the whole thing. It never occurred to me that it could be a bios issue until Sir-Lotus suggested it. I've never had an problem with any other audio software but obviously the Xbox app was seeing my onboard card and thinking that it was the main sound card when it clearly wasn't, which is a bit ironic considering it's Microsoft software. Anyhoo, thankfully it's now fixed, and thanks for the suggestion.

  • @chalkyhotdog Only just noticed your comment, sorry. Sir-Lotus's assumption was correct. :)
