Spent 3 DAYS in character creation

  • I have spent 3 whole days just trying to find a pirate that tickles my fancy, but I still haven't found one. Sure, there was a few that seemed alright but I know if I chose them I would eventually get tired and go through the process of finding a pirate again.
It's really frustrating that I even have to do this.
Why can't we just choose how we look with sliders? Because Rare doesn't want us to all look alike.. or what?
It just doesn't make sense to me. It's especially strange to me because it only makes sense to allow people to make what they want to look like on such a cosmetic heavy game. What's the point if I don't even like how my pirate looks?
What is now a 3 day process for me should have only taken 20 minutes. R.I.P.

Edit: It's been 4 days now and I would pay money to be able to change my pirate to how I want. I'm going crazy if I wasn't already lol.

  • You sir have issues. Just gonna put it out there before anyone will tell u otherwise. Iam sorry i came to this conclusion goodluck tho!

  • @phanera

Because Rare wanted to create every pirate.

If you gave people the character creator it would cause too much similarity..

You will eventually find your magnum opus.

  • You see yourself in the game for about 1 minute per session.
2 minutes if you're picking out cosmetics.

    Other than that....

  • @phanera yes, this is definitely a bane for certain personality types. Not a huge fan myself. I like the idea but feel they should give you at least 1 filter or if not, the engine should notice the types that you are holding onto as a candidate and shift new results towards those

  • @sloompie why though? He's not the only one who's taken a while. The system around the IPG needs work, just like a great many things in Sea of Thieves...

You sir, do not have issues, please disregard what the person above has said. I took eons choosing my pirate as well, and the infinite pirate generator needs and continues to need work. It doesn't bother me anymore since I've already picked my pirate, but I understand how frustrating it can be to not find one character that represents you best.

I've suggested a system of filters before. Male/female, fat/average/skinny, etc, doesn't have to be anything crazy, but whatever, people will adopt irrational positions sometimes and say there's nothing wrong and to keep it the way it is. Take your time. Be the pirate you want to be (some people forget that headline). For now, this is all we have, so we must make do.

  • @assassinsking98 Oh absolutely! Even just a male/female filter would save me hours.
And to the others who think I'm crazy, sorry not sorry I want to look good!
It wouldn't be so bad if I was looking for a male character. I think males look better with more exaggerated features, females however should look more delicate in my opinion... or at least that's how I want to look.

  • @xixxo123 I disagree. If you have ever played a game Black Desert Online or anything that has an in depth character creator you don't get many people who look the same in game.
It just feels to me like Rare doesn't trust us to create our own pirates how we want and it feels a little unfair.

It just bothers me because if I don't like how my character looks, then what's the point of getting any cosmetic items anyways? Maybe if there was something to cover my face, but that's about it.

  • well, ive seen black desert online, and thank god they didnt allow you to create the pirate, i dont wanna see pirates look like this http://s2.n4g.com/news/1855890_0.jpg

  • @mgbeares to be honest I haven't seen much different in the pirate generator haha

Are you kidding?! I would absolutely love to see characters that look like that haha

  • I spent about 6 hours rerolling my pirate before having to just settle, and I thought that was a lot. Totally agree, it does not have to be a fully fleshed out character creator, but please give us some filters in the IPG at least. At this point, even Skyrim's character creator would be faster.

  • I personally would not tell the forums this type of thing....this is troll bait if I've ever seen it.

Ok, let's say they gave you sliders. You'd spend an hour making your pirate, and then you'd still get tired of it after a while by the way you're talking. Then what?

  • I want the SPORE creature designer instead.

  • The IPG is great because it ensures that characters look piratey and fit to the artstyle of the game.
If there was a run of the mill character creator, 99% of players would run around looking like this:

Or, even worse, it could be like in Ark:

It's already noticable that a majority of players dress up in rather fancy outfits that don't feel very piratey to me. Of course, it's Rares fault for designing these items, but still. I feel like I'm often the only one looking like an actual pirate. The IPG maintains visual integrity by ensuring that characters fit the artstyle and look imperfect.

  • @nebenkuh That's true, but filters wouldn't take away from the piratey look and would help people who are trying to look for a specific character type. Even if the filter was just male/female it would have probably saved me half the time since about half the characters are male every refresh.

  • @rumham636 Lol I don't mind, just trying to voice my opinion to Rare, that's all.

  • @sir-rhavi Not necessarily. The point is I create a character that I like to begin with rather than settling with something that's just ok.
If I do happen to get bored of it at least I wont have to spend another 3 days to reroll a new character.

  • Now you get to spend countless hours dressing him up like a barby doll and you endlessly do fetch quests to buy other clothes for your doll.

    Fun times!

  • @mudweller If only, unfortunately I'm still stuck in the endless hell of choosing my character. :P

  • I spent 30 minutes and settled on a pirate I’m not entirely happy with. Would love them to allow us to re-roll our character at least once without the fear of losing stats and progress.

Monster hunter world gave us a single use ticket post launch which allowed us to re-roll our character but also keep our stats. I’d love for Rare to incorporate something similar. @Rare-Employee

  • @hudson-rl It would be nice to be able to check out the other characters before you commit to a new one. Like be able to find one and when you finally do, select it and be asked if you want to replace the pirate you have already.

  • Just make peace with not having full control with regard to how you look. Like in real life.

There's only so many faces, skin tones, makeup, ink, and body types in the game. If you've spent 3 days on it, you've certainly seen all of the options.

Just highlight the ones you like for a while and rotate the ones you don't. When you have a few favorite, make a pick.

With sliders, ever male would look like either a tough black beard, or a Johnny depp, and every female would have mode "delicate" features, which clearly is what RARE didn't want.

Now I get crews with all kinds of body types and age and it is great.

You get to change your hair style and clothes after anyway.

  • next week when you finally picked your character make sure to post a picture here (:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/38048/ahoy-my-name-is-insert-pirate-name-picture/106?page=4

  • @cpt-peach-beard haha will do, thank you!

  • @xixxo123 Except that's nonsense. If you give people a character creator they'll try to make something that looks like themselves (or something crazy), which will result in far more variation that any random generator could ever hope for. The only reason for the IPG is because rare wanted characters with exaggerated features that fit their provious visual style. Any other reason is blowing smoke up our afts.

  • @verminpup So they should have a random starting point and only let sliders tweak what's there within a certain threshold. Bingo, done, people are happy.

  • @verminpup I have made peace with that, I know for a fact I will end up settling and I knew that from the beginning. I have also seen most of the character options in the game.
All I have been doing is waiting for a cute face and a non broad shouldered female which apparently is rare to find, which is unfortunate. Sounds like it should be easy but nope, every female I have seen thus far has some weird parrot nose, long face or old.

All I'm really asking for at this point is a female/male filter which shouldn't be hard to do. It would just save me a ton of time that I wouldn't have to waste looking through male characters that I'm not going to choose.

  • Srsly dude, that's life you can't always get what you want and you probably passed by some amazing looking pirates.

You just have a decision making problem, so don't blame Rare for that.

My pirate looks like an ugly old man with a nose bigger than it's face yet I found another way to have fun in dressing him accordingly to the image it projects.

You will eventually find your magnum opus.

Except the allegedly IPG seems to be selecting pirates from ten families of seemingly endless identical siblings with different scars and tattoos.

  • @wturok It's not life, its another dumb excuse to have control over something that is one of the main parts of the game, which isn't fair.
Sorry not sorry I don't want to dress up some old fat lady in clothes unless its a bag over her head. I'm not going to spend time playing the game to earn gold for the only reason of dressing my ugly character. It's like another rust (though that's an exaggeration) where you can't choose your gender for some dumb political nonsense.

I understand why they made it this way but it doesn't make sense for a game that's all about cosmetics.

  • @phanera I'm with you on this. The argument that the IPG prevents pirates from looking the same is absurd, especially when so many of those created by the IPG look almost identical anyway.

  • @mr-spiderhead Exactly, every 30 pirates who look equally as ugly I find only 1 "maybe". Maybe my standards are too high for a pirate but how is a cute pirate less realistic than eating a banana whole?

  • After looking at another post, I came across this picture.
For all of you who think I'm crazy for not being able to find a pirate or too picky. This is exactly the type of character that I'm having trouble trying to find.
    IT IS POSSIBLE
    but only just almost.
