Land exploration, similar to ship wrecks.

  • I feel like this would add SOOOO much to SoT. Most of the time I don't even bother with voyages.... (I know I'm a glutton for punishment) but imagine if there were PoI's just like shipwrecks but on land. This would add so much to sot. I'm not talking about the random message or item on an island. But abandoned camps, shipwrecks on land, just about anything ancient relics ect ect. That would spawn 3 or so loot items. Basically work just like the shipwrecks but on land. What I hate the most is "exploring" only for screen shot fodder.... I absolutely hate that. Caves are mostly empty in fact always empty? Never found anything in a cave. Areas of interest on island like campfires and what not are normally void of anything. I'm not trying to obsolete voyages but I feel like giving a reason to just follow the wind in sot would really start to open things up.

  • @rdizz Unless this was changes with a patch, you have a chance to find loot, including skulls and chests, on random islands. I like to explore the islands too and got lucky a couple of times to make some money with it.

Oh ya I'm aware of the random loot. What I'm trying to explain is something similar to ship wrecks, but on islands. As of now occasionally you find 1 chest or random item. But I'm talking about actual points of interest that are explorable with loot spawn similar to how ship wrecks work, but you know on land. Could be an abandoned building an old dock, a camp, graveyard I mean the list can keep going. Feel like that would be way more engaging then just seeing a chest on a shoreline.

  • @rdizz Actually that's already how it works.
You have occasionally stuff on the shores, sure.
But there are a couple of other specific places where you can find loot, and these are special places.
On Smuggler Bay for example the cave is always worth a look, the bridge above the bay and the cliffs around thsi bridge too.
I can't remember the names of all islands right now, but some ruins, campfires and broken rowboats should also be checked in some places.

I dont know, I have not once found any loot what so ever on anything like that only ship wrecks and on shorelines. Everything else just seems like decoration. Its funny because what you are describing is what im looking for. But I've been playing since alpha days almost every day.... and never not once have I come across what you speak of. I guess I'm that unlucky?

  • @Rdizz I get what you're saying

The best thing about ship wrecks is they can be spotted from distance, and they sometimes have ready good items inside (up to 4 or 5), so always worth a detour to check out.

Currently beach items are pretty infrequent and you can't spot them unless you are really really close, so often not worth diverting from the critical path to beach scan every island.

If birds where more reliable in signifying that an island may have something hidden away on it, that might work. I can't actually think of many landmarks/POIs that would make sense on the islands though, it would have to be something temporary. Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is beached ships, but that's not very imaginative.

  • I like the idea of more random encounters and being to find treasure more organically. They touched on adding to this in one of their latest videos I believe.

To add to this I present the idea of beached galleons as another random loot encounter. Beached galleons could spawn randomly on beaches and be defended by skeletons aboard and on shore.

    Yes yes yes

Imagine a skeleton holding a shovel with a half buried chest you could loot.

Or 2 skeletons both with pistols in hand lying next to each other one of them has a key in hand that opens a door on the island or even a trinket in his hand. The encounter will tell it's own story a treacherous tale at that.

  • Aye, some kind of visible signal like the shipwrecks would be nice. It is always nice to run across random objects on a beach, so I don't want to see those go. Perhaps turn the many cave systems into an equiv o' the wrecks, maybe ye find some good plunder, maybe ye find nowt but an empty cave (cure ye empty wrecks!!!) but would encourage random stops at islands.

    This satisfies my hungering deep.
