Well, when I don't use my mic I go through all the options of text chat that I can to get my point. For example, "I see a ship (spy-glass) north(compass) man cannons (cannon). I go around to the different things that I can use and I use the chat that way. One of the reasons that I don't chat (most of the time) is because of the annoying, toxic, and unnecessarily crude players that there are. That is how I use deal with my "mic-less disposition".
You there without a mic, yes you guess what, we found a way to deal with this

I spent an hour , an hour looking for a crew , any crew with a mic. I understand the problems but its not fair to those of us with mics. How you play wihthout a mic is beyond us. Now, when I land on someones vessel without a mic being that we are all pirates, I wait till your not looking and take off with your ship and somehow it sinks. Guess I am not the sailor I thought I was. No, I don't really but that is how irritating it is. For the love of God those without mics really should be sailing alone. We cant ask you to get on the cannon, or bail, or set anchor and when you say i see a ship do realize how useless that statement is. Where is the ship? Are they coming this way? Big ship or small ship? Oh yeah , I am suppose to get off the wheel follow you and look where your pointing while our ship spins. Please,if you don't have a mic sail solo. The rest of us don't want to waste an hour looking for someone that has a mic. That is two days in a row that I quit playing without doing a quest cause all my time was taken up looking for someone with a mic.. There that is my two cents.
Well, instead of you ruining their game by being you...Use the forums or discord channels to find crews that use mic. Fact is that not all players own a mic so its not for you to ruin their game for that reason.
Grow up "pirates"
PS: I use a mic.. so no issue for me.. just saying.

@xklix if you read my post right you would see i said i don;t really sink their ship just feel like it. So perhaps you should read a bit more carefully.
I agree i missread you. so i appologise for that :) But il just leave my comment there anyway cause there are other people there that missread it as i do and probably would agree with that way of dealing with it ;)
Im pretty sure there are alot of people actualy dealing with it the way that you "feel" to do and i cant see any good coming from it ;)
Hopefully the invite only crews and stuff will work in the future.. maby adding mic only invites or something like that ;)
@captmarti
First of all, you did say you'd think their ship.
Second of all, as someone who has a mic and would happily communicate with people if not for the damned thing not working, I can confirm that using text chat is more than sufficient.
More often than not things go better with people using text chat, since they tend to be less arrogant :)I am of the opinion that if you have trouble playing with a mic-less crewmate are you really that good? I can understand issues with people not communicating but that is different than just being without a mic. Once you know the ins and outs of the game, having a mic is more of a quality of life type thing vs something essential at this point.
My main issue with using a mic, is the game doesn't recognise my good mic. I have a Shure SM57 mic, which is a music industry standard for vocals and is really clear and crisp but the stupid game won't recognise it. It may be something to do with it using an AUX input to my sound card, but it shouldn't be an issue as every other game and voice programme I use works with it. And yes I have configured the Xbox app to use it but the game still refuses to use it. Instead I have to use the rubbish mic on my headphones which doesn't sound anywhere as good and doesn't allow me to adjust the input volume, resulting in people telling me it's too quiet.
I will use the headset mic if I really feel like I have to but more often than not I just use text to communicate with people which generally works okay, although it can be a disadvantage when it comes to PvP type situations when quick comms are needed.
I really wish Rare would fix this and allow me to use my good Shure mic. Sigh.

Maybe you should read a bit more carefully because the text wheel is pretty easy to use to communicate in-game.
i normally use a mic, and most of my conversations with random people are far from toxic. sometimes though i just want to chill on the couch and sail, and i have no mic on that console. i find the chat wheel options to be pretty handy. they could fine tune them for us, but i can get by. "i see a shipwreck", and "i see a galleon/sloop" would be the 1st 2 i'd add. it would be nice if they'd bind the compass call outs on the "more" option of the spyglass, so i don't have to change equipment to give direction. if i ever get used to using my xbox hot keys i could make it easier. anyways the wheel can do for most situations, although i'd want a mic at forts. start by asking your crewmate for an "aye" if they can hear you. if you can relay commands to them you're half way there.
I have an answer, I'm inviting you to my discord, for those looking for people with a mic and want to play Sea of Thieves. I play daily and ranks are G.H. 40, O.o.S 35, Merch 35. New discord channel and looking for active people who love Sea of Theives. Even if you have no mic. We'll do our best to hook you up.

@lifewcoke You might want to look at my profile before you question how good I am. I don't and wont ever brag about it. It was simply my job and you brought it up. I still respect your opinion though.
@captmarti I do not need to look at your profile. This quote right here tells me a lot:
How you play wihthout a mic is beyond us.
I have a Shure SM57 mic
That's not really a vocal mic. It can get some clear vocals, but it's more designed for picking up instruments. I have 5 of them for a drum kit.
If you want a solid vocal mic, you want the 55SH Series II. Beautiful dynamic vocal pickup. Works great in studio and on stage.
I have a mic...sorta falling apart at this point but it works. I don't use it mainly cause I solo most of the time but also because I try to be respectful of my wife and 3 year old and the times when I could get away running with a crew are times when I try not to make more noise than I need to.
I generally avoid matchmaking for these sort of 'mic elitist' stances on the issue. Hopefully that term doesn't offend anyone just seemed like the easiest way to refer to these topics. I truly understand and agree that a mic is a big benefit to this game so I don't mean it negatively.
I think as a playerbase it is more important to strive for communicating clearly versus pushing for everyone to have a mic. I have heard a lot of people over their mics and it's hard to understand them and I've run into people with no mic and no chat beyond 'ahoy' and I understood their intent perfectly.
I think so long as a person can communicate in some way and be understood than there shouldn't be a problem. In the end everyone will still have their preferences but...it's a nice thought.
@captmarti the title said you had 'found a way to deal with this'....yet was just a rant about how people without mics should not ruin 'your' game.
some people have mics and choose not to use them or even can't use them for whatever reason. even if they don't have a mic, they still have as much right to play as you do.
if you want to play with people with mics, use the looking for groups feature or the official discord
just don't think you are better than or have any more right to play than someone that has paid for the game. mic or not.
Ahoy!
Just wanted to let you know we have had to removed your profanity from your comment as it is in breach of our Pirate Code.
Please be sure to review The Pirate Code for more information.Thank you for being understanding!
@captmarti I know it can be very frustrating as this game relies on crews working together with team work which involves precise communications.
I have tried unplugging then re-plug the mic back into my PC. But that would mute myself out of the game session recording.
I used to server hop until at least someone could hear and reply to me although there is sometimes a few minutes delay between me saying something and them replying to it. A form of lag.I have found in most cases that it isn't a case of them not having a mic but rather the in-game chat that is at fault.
We have often thought that a random may not have a mic then suddenly they have fixed the issue by turning audio features on and off. Whether we suggest it or they discover it for themselves.
"Push to talk" is a major one that often leads to working when toggled on and off. Sometimes it take a couple of attempts. There is also the Xbox app party chat feature which is even better as others in game can't hear your crew's plans.
I had multiple great experiences with people who had a mic and others who don't. The contextual chat is also a really good way to communicate with people who speak different languages. I use it everytime and english or other players understand better what I quickly want to say like that.
If you don't want to get off the wheel just ask them if it's a sloop and they could say yes or no, simple as it is. They're not ruining your experience of the game, you're doing it by yourself.
Rare is working on a optimized matchmaking where we will be able to chose our crew by their mic status. In the meantime, you, play solo, drink a grog and kill some skellies to calm down.
Lately I've been noticing random galleon crews are getting more proficient. Sure I'll end up with my share of idiot randoms, but the better players know how to play. With or without a mic.
I remember a ship of mutes, one pirate would pull his shovel out and bang on the floor next to the captain's desk to get people to vote. That's effective communication. This crew would have a great cruise, completing several voyages, fending off several attackers.
It was 4am and my wife did not wake up and scream S**U.@subaqueousreach From the Shure website ...
"Cardioid dynamic instrument microphone offers clean reproduction of amplified and acoustic instruments. Features include contoured frequency response for rich vocal pickup, background noise reduction, and a pneumatic shock mount system"
If it's good enough for Mark Knoplfer and David Gilmour then it's good enough for me. I dare you to tell them it's not a vocal mic. :P
