A change with treasure maps is needed.

  • I like to suggest something about the handheld treasure maps. Can you guys make it so it's possible to zoom in or look closer at the treasure maps that we carry around? Sometimes it is quite hard to determine where treasure is on some larger and more complicated islands such as Old Faithful.

  • I agree, it doesn't have to be a big zoom but just a bit so we can see the rocks and plants better.

I often zoom into the ship map first before going onto and island as this can help, but it would be nice to see a bit more detail on the ones we carry.

  • @themuckypaw @Makin-D-Bacon
I know it's not ideal, but you can sort of zoom in on your treasure map by putting the FOV slider to min & then checking it. Like i said, not ideal but works.
Just remember to switch it back to your usual setting when you're done with the map. ;)

  • @logansdadtoo that's actually not that bad of an idea lol

  • @logansdadtoo Yea, I guess that might help but it's a bit of a laborious way of doing it.

  • Isn't the entire challenge trying to find them on a large island?

If you want easy chests, just cycle missions until you get small islands.

It's not that, you already know exactly where the chest is because of the map. But you cant look closer so it just becomes annoying at times.

If you knew exactly where it was, then you wouldn't need to zoom in. Your problem is that don't know exactly where it is, only roughly where it is.

I believe that part of the fun/challenge of larger island treasure maps is using those few points of reference to actually find the treasure. If you could zoom in, you're trivialising it.

We know exactly where it is. It's where the red X on the map is. I can already "zoom" in by walking up to my TV I dont want to do that anymore.

  • @rdizz Yes. It's at the X. But apparently you're still having trouble finding it. So you don't know exactly where oh I give up.

I dont have trouble finding them at all. Because I have a map that shows me where to dig. I just really hate walking up to my tv.

    #dontmakemegetup

  • You can zoom in.

Get another player to hold up the map, take out your spyglass, look at map.

I've been using this technique for ages, thought everyone knew about it.

  • Having each map flippable for an island/local view would be useful.

  • The zoom on the ship map is pretty much this. It's not as convenient, but I use it whenever I'm having a difficult time with an X on a large map and it get's me to the right spot every time.

  • @xGODKEVIN
I do occasionally have them ;)

    @boxcar-squidy
Can't do that if solo unfortunately ;)

  • @logansdadtoo yeah, and solo is the worst possible time to be searching a large island for ages trying to find a chest

  • I normally just go to the map desk and zoom in there to get a bigger view before going on the island. helps a little bit at least.

  • @boxcar-squidy
    Very true indeed!
If i get an awkward central 'x' marks the spot map on Old Faithful or Plunder Valley when solo i tend to either cancel the voyage or detour & cash in 1st.
I've been caught out numerous times on those 2 islands searching for my treasure :(

  • @logansdadtoo yeah me too. As a solo it's called Plunder Valley because your ship will get plundered while you're in the valley and it's called Old Faithful because you can rely on another ship sinking yours every time you go to search for a chest there.

  • @boxcar-squidy
    hahahaha :D

  • The entire idea is to make it a tiny bit challenging? Hence they are just a "rough" map to go off and zooming in to see the map would make it far to simple not that its even hard or something to give out about...

Gamers these days do my head wanting everything so easy I'm sure you'd prefer if you just went to the island and the chest was there on the beech dug up and waiting for you... zzzZZZ

It's supposed to be hard lol it's a treasure map. There are tons of clues on the maps use rocks and trees to help. If that fails have a friend hold it up and use your spyglass.

  • I can think of nothing more boring than maps that are easy to follow. Riddles that are easy to solve. And quests that provide even less incentive to do anything but 1. Go to a place. 2. Pick up a thing. 3. Take it back.

As a solo slooper, often the only thing that keeps me entertained is the frustration of scouring a large island for some frustratingly hidden X ... All the while knowing that my ship is bobbing unprotected and several angry Skeletans are trying to get their stolen pig back.

If all I have to do is jump an island with my Age of Sale Satnav system, grab the thing and take it back, the game would feel even less alive than it currently does.

Convenience in a game like SoT is a bad idea. With limited stuff to do, the last thing we need is for it to be streamlined.

  • Slightly ot but my missus was in town the other day and she walked passed a father and daughter.
"Daddy look, buried treasure!" She said pointing to a red X on the pavement (road maintenance etc i guess)
    Ahh haha.

    Exactly that ^^^
Lets not make every game so easy as to give a player an arrow above their character to indicate where to go...
Take away the adventure from an adventure game and what is left?

  • @boxcar-squidy add a magnifying glass to the game!

  • @mindarchitect I should still be able to look closer at a map. I'm not asking for a 200% zoom or anything like that. I'm just asking for the real ability to pull the map a little closer to my face. That's not too much to ask for.

  • @pixelhood It's a map with an X where the treasure is buried. I can lift it up and shove it in someone else's face so they can see it better, but I can't shove it into mine. How can wanting the ability to look at a map a little closer be the same as getting everything easy? If you had a map IRL you can bring it up to your face to get a better look. I mean, isn't that the point of a treasure map? To show where the treasure is to dig up? Fun fact: I once did visit an island an found a chest almost dug up out of the ground. No one around. LOL

  • @makin-d-bacon IRL you can't fire yourself from a cannon and just land on ground, IRL you don't get attacked by skeletons.... this is a game...

Showing others the map I presume is a way of rare trying to get people working together even tho I think its a real pointless function.

The matter of the fact is you have a "rough" scaled treasure map you don't need this function and I can think of probably 100 things they could add or fix in the game without worrying about a really easy map people find hard?...

  • @makin-d-bacon I do know what you mean, many times have I been annoyed by the bigger islands, for sure!
But this is actually the way it should be if you ask me.
I'm pretty sure pirates aren't the best cartographers anyway.. XD
Games are becoming to easy, and this way there is still some "adventure" in finding these treasure chests, even if it brings annoyance as well.
At least you haven't actually dug a hole for over half an hour to an hour before you have to check a new position, takes just a second or 2 in the game. ;)

Edit: Remember the time were videogames actually made you think?! I hardly do these days... Good example could be The Elder Scrolls Morrowind, another good one would be Myst.

  • freaking Myst! and Riven. those were the days lads, those were the days. freaking blue pages

  • Just have one person hold the map out and the other use the spy glass to look at it. You're welcome.

  • @mindarchitect I still want to be able to hold the map closer to my face, simple as that.

@pixelhood It would be working together if only one person got the map. I'm not asking for anything unreasonable in my opinion.
