I could have sworn that there was the option to change the mapping of the buttons on the controller as you like. Specifically to bind certain items to the d-pad or things like that. I went to look at that today and found that I couldn't find it anywhere. Was it removed or am I remembering something that was never in the game?

Yup it's definitely still there. While in game go into settings/controls. It'll show you what your controls currently are, and if you scroll down you'll find the "item shortcuts" section, and by default they are all assigned to "none." There are three buttons on the Xbox controller that are currently unassigned, which are d-pad left and right, as well as the press of the right stick. You can assign three shortcuts to those buttons. I currently have left d-pad as bananas and right d-pad set to the spyglass. I haven't decided what to assign the right stick click to, because often when playing a close quarters battle I will accidentally click the sticks in, which is exactly what you don't want in the heat of battle
