only way to check battery is if the controller is plugged in
at which point it says wired

You need to download the Xbox Accessories app, update it, and if available, your controller and then turn on the controller and select More Options.
It is one of the most asinine things about using an official controller that I have ever seen.
Also while I'm ranting the Buzz feature does not work in the app, so you can not test the vibrate.
the more options is greyed out unless i plug it in and make it wired, useless app

Are you using the official Xbox Wireless adapter?
no, im useing a bluetooth adapter
I tried an official adapter once and to make it work i had to disable my GPU and uninstall steam at which point I couldn't run any games
i recommend you to try the steps some different people told you to in the posts before :
get the app , ,use the original wireless adapter ,update all your stuff ( including windows,graphics drivers ,etc.) and then try again .i had to do all those steps to get my xbox controller working proper ,too . now all works fine . i dont need to uninstall or turn of anything ;)
