So it's happened to me twice in the past week. There is a battle at the skull fort over the key and in the chaos the key holder is eaten by a shark. After much searching no one is able to find it. Do they sink? Is there a time frame before they disappear?
Do skull fort keys sink?

Oh wow! So keep them dry. Don't even risk them on a boat.
Anyone know some good hiding spots?First rule of hiding spots is don't talk about hiding spots

Anyone know some good hiding spots?Yeah i know some good hiding spots :) quite a few actually
@honusdan i thought they sank as well. i put one in the water in some sea weed to hide it from other players after we killed the captain, certain it would stay hidden. after fighting the other crew i returned to find it floating on the surface.
i think they are just buggy.
While in a fort fight a crew member from another Galleon grapped the key and went swimming while we chased him and his friends. Total chaos!
The key was lost to the sea (but we didn't know that - as far as we knew the guy with the key could be swimming to a nearby island). We sunk the enemy Galleon and kept searching for the key on and around the fort (I thought someone was sneaking around with it). The Galleon came back, but it kept circling the fort. We guessed they were looking for the key in the water as they kept patrolling the same stretch of water.
I approached the (spanish) galleon and yelled, where is the key. They bluffed and told me they had it on their ship. I swam back knowing they had lost the key.
In the end, after maybe 30-60 minutes of this stand off and sporadic skirmishes, they sailed away.
We stayed on the fort and talked about the situation, speculating about the key.
I drifted around in our ship where the enemy galleon was earlier and then suddenly I saw something in the water!I found the key in the water maybe 100-200 meters from the fort and it had been in the sea for at least 30 minutes, max 1 hour (lost track of time).
I've never recovered a key from a ship that sank while carrying it. I've heard about some key shenanigans, like one person who claims to have seen a key disappear when placed on the floor of the bottom deck of a sloop filling with water. Another who claims to have seen the key with a friend on the bottom of the ocean, neither could pick it up. One of their other guys saw the key on top of the water and was able to pick it up. There are some crazy key stories in this very topic! One thing is for sure, and that's we're not quite sure what the hell is going to happen when the key sinks or maybe even just touches the water.
