Premium shop? No wonder the content seems to be lacking..

  • So apparently this is a known thing that i just barely found out about.. Premium shop coming in the future? Basically Micro Transactions, but not loot boxes...
So those animal companions that people are hoping for will cost real money instead of being able to blow all the coins you have been saving up because the cosmetic items are a bit lacking...
Anyone know anything about this? Its a HUGE turn off to the game for me, especially those that paid full price. Luckily I game passed it but if the future game content ends up revolving around this store I may end up cancelling.

Anyone know more about this that can put my fears to rest? If you can suddenly just buy coins for in game items no doubt the progression system will be affected in some way as well/loot value will drop

  • Content updates to Sea of Thieves are, and will remain free for all of our players. The only items we have confirmed for microtransactions are pets, which will not impact any user's experience, nor give an in game advantage. You can learn about our upcoming plans for the game here:

  • That was the plan to fund the game, but there has been significantly less talk about micro transactions after they realized people were unhappy with the overall content. In the future, for sure, gotta crank out content in an unfinished game with some dough. Doesn’t really bother me though

  • @shuoink
Rare have confirmed that you will be able to get animals in game without micro-transactions.
It's still annoying as they will probably be super rare... boom boom tsss
But while I hope it isn't super difficult to get them we can only tell with time.

There are no gameplay advantages to anything in the premium shops....so it's not like you will get boosts in any way. If you don't really care about having a pet that does absolutely nothing to give you an edge in the game....then who cares.

The premium shop is fine for those who want to spend cash animal friends, and for those who don't want to spend real money and could care less about pets, we good yo!

Thank you for the information on the content updates. Free content is always nice, but its a scary/slipper slope for some consumers when micro transactions are added in game for anything whether it affects progression or not.
I shouldn't be surprised though as its a profitable business model for a lot of games out there currently. I hope people wont be able to just buy coins in the future as i am sure it will dramatically devalue in game loot. I Suppose we will see what happens and i DO look forward to the future content (that wont cost extra beyond what was paid for already). Initially it can make it seem like some things were left out intentionally only to be added in later for an extra price, but the free content updates are a little re assuring. Thanks again

  • They need to have a way to bring in money. So if it doesn't affect game balance I'm all in. I'd be fine if they let me buy ship looks etc.

  • Can't say I love micro transactions, but I am ok with this format to help fund future updates so long as they're worth it. Look at GTA online. They're still coming up with new content to this day. As long as you know exactly what you are paying for, I am completely fine with it. Now look at any EA title where you're buying loot boxes or packs, not knowing what you'll get and most often being disappointed. Set up to truly take advantage of it's players with an addictive gambling problem. Not only that, but its blatantly obvious that all that extra revenue is never used to better their sorry excuses for games. That form of micro transactions really grinds my gears

  • If you are just now learning about this, that's on you. It's been advertised pretty heavily, talked about quite a bit prior to launch (both in terms of marketing, on Reddit and on forums). Most of us are quite happy about this, as it ensures no power advantages, gives us a non-gambling way to support the game and ensures free content updates.

If you don't like the business model, you're probably in the minority. They are taking everything that sucks about microtransactions out of the equation as far as we can tell so far. The only thing I hope is that the purchase pool of cosmetics are completely different from the in game ones.

  • @drunkpunk138 microtransactions ARE everything that sucks about microtransactions...

  • They mentioned their would be ways to earn or buy them in game without paying for them. But I don't care they can take my money!
