involving community in Anti-Cheat systems

  • As there are quite a few threads open in this forum about possible cheaters, there is a simple question:
    How to identify real cheaters?
I won't even try to sell this as my original idea, i am just thinking of a system like CS:GO Overwatch and if this could be a thing in SoT.

Basically the idea is, that if someone is reported, a couple of community-member help Rare to review the situation from an ingame PoV and vote if and what kind of cheats they certainly identified.
As in CS:GO, not everyone should be alowed to do the reviews, there should be restrictions, like playtime, maybe level, or Rare even handpicks the reviewers.

But i think technically this would be a lot more complex than CS:GO, as SoT provides a very dynamic world with a lot of variables, other than a static map in CS.

Could this be helpful for the game? It would require quite a lot of implementation, but could work over a long term to find cheaters and i'm expecting that there are enough community member who would take the time to review footage.

  • I don't think this game has anywhere near the amount of people cheating as CSGO does and I would guess the majority of cheater reports are likely bogus. Unlike CSGO, pvp interactions can be far a few between. I have played for 10 hours in a single session before now without even spotting another ship, let alone getting into a conflict.

MS has always kept their policing behind closed doors and it should probably remain that way. I cannot see how an overwatch system would work in this game. What we really need is MS writing anti cheat systems to detect unsigned software running while Rare and Unreal work together to fix the vulnerabilities in the engine. Although it would be nice if MS would just write their own closed source engine rather than using Unreal for future titles.

  • @warmedxmints Hopefully we don't have that many cheater here, but it's hard to tell. I for myself did not have any encouters with any obvious cheaters, but seeing some forum threads there seem to be some at least questionable guys out there.
The time between encounters varies a lot, so i guess there could be only an encounter to be reviewed or a certain time around the moment the reporter and the reported one did interact/are close to another. It's even harder to judge if you report someone fro myour own crew.
If this system would work in SoT, is up to the experts. I'm honestly not sure if it will, for now it's just an idea.
They should of course still fix all vulnerabilities, but this is always a race between DEVs and cheaters, the cheaters will come up with new ideas, the DEVs react, so the cheaters are looking for new weak spots again and so it goes on and on.
