@rogueal69 having a whole sandbox to make your own content in is obviously too difficult for some it would seem. Which I suppose for some generations younger than mine who've never had to entertain themselves or experienced the awesomeness that is tabletop roleplaying games it may be difficult!
If you don’t like the game, just leave.
@acid182 thats why sandbox games work for me! I didnt get to buy a new game every 2 weeks like some kids, I got games for Christmas and sometimes my birthday so I had to make them suckers last! This game has thousands of aspects to explore, it seems players get caught up in the idea of an "end game."
Thank you for that insight sir. It is about as deep as a spoonful of sugar. The ultimate goal of any game is to attract players to play, or am I missing something? Well nothing turns a player off more than grinding for loot only to have some a****t jump your ship when questing an island or sunken ship. So begins the pointless and downright r******d cycle of getting killed, respawning to get spawn killed again and again, until you say F it and turn the game off.
Not even going to touch the god awful pvp mech which would only reintegrate the rage one is filled with during this encounter.
Bottom line...no one likes playing a loot based game only to go home empty handed.
But don't worry pal, you will get what your asking for as endgame.
People will get sick of this pointless cycle of events and leave, and you and another couple of asshats can continue fighting each other, if you can find each other as you will be the only ones on the server.
See destiny 2 for confirmation of what I am writing...be careful what you ask for, as you just might get it.@mayo68
that's the thing though the majority of people are not having these issues while playing even when I'm playing alone I barley get boarded and I especially never get boarded doing a shipwreck or hoarder voyage. as I always watch my surrounding and I will always do a 360 spin from the crows nest each and everytime I jump into a shipwreck and if someone does manage to get onto my ships that's on me for being lax with my drills and I deserve to dieI'm very satisfied with SoT, I play almost daily, I haven't been playing anything else. I love the sailing it's great, sea battles are fun. I'm truly annoyed by the amount of negative comments on these forums, constructive criticism is one thing, but what most people are doing isn't even criticism, it's just nasty.
@lord-sphinktus yea I play most the week have a night or 2 on pubg and every fri night on DbD otherwise its just SoT and Man do I love this game its like a online version of sid meier's pirates and I hope it heads more in that direction with future content the ability to attack and conquer ports and strongholds and swap their factions would be great
@nebenkuh I don't include the wild life as part of the enemies. It's not necessary to fight them to complete your mission. Just a matter of perspective I guess. Also, yes, I consider the same skeleton in various forms of dress up one enemy.
EDIT
Regarding the kraken. Its should definitely be complete. The main draw of this game is the water. Did they think players weren't going to go under to see what it looks like?! Not to mention it could have added some depth to the combat by having a hard to get weak spot on the body. The most obvious reason for having it though is because this is full priced game and I want to see fully animated charactersAs far as not being able to climb, crouch etc... I guess you don't try to run and hide from people. The inability to climb forces you to take very predictable paths when dealing with enemies. The inability to crouch makes hiding very limited and gun fights very basic. Bending down is the difference between having cover and taking a bullet to the face. Not to mention, just the feel of even controlling our characters feels EXTREMELY dated. It's like playing a cartoony Doom mod.
Drinking and throwing up ain't gonna cut it. The NPCs might as well be animatronic pirates on kids ride. Because of this the only thing we can do to make this world seem slightly alive is interacting with other players and there NEEDS to be more options to do so. That tavern should be filled with other pirates taking a break between adventures, ya know, like EVERY other pirate movie that has ever existed. In order to encourage that there should be things to do in town OTHER than kill each other.

I try to offer legitimate feedback (unless I'm saying things to be silly) so I hope it's coming across that way. I don't get the need for players to write Dear John letters when they quit. The drop in daily players will speak for itself. That being said, I can see where people are getting frustrated with the state of gaming. This whole "games as a service" movement is pushing devs to release half finished, online only games at full price because they think they can fix it later. What they don't seem to realize is that first impression count and they will lose a bulk of their potential player base with that approach. The ones that will suffer in the long run are the dedicated fans such as yourself as the game bleeds to death from thousands of tiny cuts while the devs try to put Band-Aids everywhere. Instead of just coming out strong right out of the gate.

That's not the issue. The game is too limited to adequately Choose Your Own Adventure. Table top games allowed for damn near limitless role-playing. This game is basically a pop up a book. Pretty to look at but there isn't much going on on the other side. Kinda how they couldn't even bother to finish animating the Kraken. Were we supposed to use our imagination for the rest of it?
@theothervillain whats limiting you?
Kraken having no body is not a limitation in any way. You currently fight the tentacles, the body has no role in it.
@nic727
-Crossplay puts some users at a disadvantage-PVP is fine but a lot of people troll
-ships are fine but its a pirate game and there are only two? nothing different or really customizable other than color.
-teamwork is great, were pirates, but again people are trolls. randoms dont pull their weight
-voyages are basically the same three boring missions over and over with little originality between them. not really even a point to do them. forts are the only efficient way to level.
-you grind for legendary status to get what, a handful more cosmetics and a hideout that you can do what? stand in? thats it? on top of that there is literally nothing to do at any island except just stand on it.
-the snakes are cool, just way to many
-raids would be cool if they offered more than one at a time seeing how its the only efficient way to make money and to separate the people trying to take them all at once
-skeletons are cool and definitely a needed threat (one of the only) but they are way to accurate. They shouldnt line up and complete a 7 pistol execution (through a friggin rock)
-the kraken. could have been awesome. he is weak af, fought him 6 times now, havent died once and he maybe put a total of 3 holes in our ship. I should be terrified to face the kraken. not annoyed.
We complain because we are passionate about this game, and aren't ready to give up on it. We thought it was going to be much more than it is, which I guess is our fault but were definitely lead on.

Based on that the NPCs dont need to have bodies. The skeletons don't need to have clothes. Heck we don't need to have clothes. It's a game and the focus of which, is immersion. Maybe it's the artsy guy in me but I get off on the small details. I remember being excited when they added light effects to 3d games and the first time I saw my character leave footprints on the ground. One of the reasons i picked my SoT character is he had scars on his hand like he had a long history of sword fighting and a story to tell.
The details matter
@deadlock-ganj As far as ship go...I wanted a dinghy. A dingy like the cover of the game. I want to be able to anchor my ship somewhere hidden and take the dinghy to the island without drawing attention. Make the other pirates look for me, make em earn it.
@theothervillain
I don't include the wild life as part of the enemies.
Some could call that moving the goalposts, but whatever.For the kraken, it would be interesting to know their design process. But once they decided the water around the Kraken would be completely black, there was no point to make the body tbh. If I glitch behind the environment in a game, I don't complain that there's nothing there.
Apart from that, I can see a lot of issues arising with having the entire Kraken. The way it works now, the black water appears, then tentacles can spawn anywhere in that water. I've seen the Kraken grab multiple ships at once. So either it would have reaaaaaally long tentacles, or a giant body. But what if the Kraken wants to appear near an island? His body would have to be prevented from glitching into rocks and into ships as well.
I guess a workaround could be to keep the black water, but have the Krakens head surface from time to time to chomp into a ship, kinda like in that Pirates of the Carribean movie.
So as you can see, there might be a lot of issues that people fail to take into account when complaining about the Kraken. But in all honesty, it does seem rushed. I guess they were working on more elaborate Kraken mechanics and also a completey Kraken, but were short on time, so they made the Kraken we got now so we'd at least have something.As for the combat, I don't agree at all. Do you play on Xbox by any chance? On PC, movement feels completely fine and smooth, like in any other FPS game. Cover, crouching and climbing mechanics just don't fit into the style of the game. It's an arcadey adventure game with FPS elements. You can jump and sprint to your hearts content, so I don't think your movement is too limited in any way. Cover, crouching etc. would just unncessarily overcomplicate the system. The only thing I would agree to would be the ability to climb onto land from the water. As it currently stands, because you can't jump in the water, the only way to get on an island is to find a spot that is shallow enough to walk on, and that can be very annoying sometimes.
The NPCs might as well be animatronic pirates
They are. Their purpose is to give you quests and buy your loot. That's it. This game is not an RPG or a simulation. Idk what you'd want the NPCs to do exactly?
As for taverns, with the current server population that's just not gonna happen. We get like 6 ships per server and sometimes it already feels pretty empty. Now if half the server population would hang out in some tavern, the seas would feel even more empty.
I could see some kind of lobby server outside of the actual game, where people could join with their pirates and socialice.@nebenkuh Eh...I dont think it's moving the goal posts regarding enemies. The wildlife is more hazards than enemies. It's like the storms that occur. It's better to avoid it but if you find yourself face to face you have to deal with it. You gain nothing by interacting with it. Like I said, a matter of perspective.
Perhaps the kraken is more complicated but this is a world built bottom up from someones imagination. If there is an issue with the world it's something they created. They are basically God's in this realm. That's what's great about animation and gaming. You aren't limited by the physical rules. If they cant find a better way to implement that it's either lack of imagination or ability.
Yes, I play on XBox. For once I'd argue it doesn't matter what system you play on. The ability to move your character around like an actual person is important. I don't think it complicates things to bend down and climb. That's base level FPS these days. I'm not saying it needs to be Titan Fall style wall running but some basic movement would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I forgot to addess this point. This game is definitely being sold as an RPG/Simulator thing...if not, what is this game? A big PvP battle Royal on ships? That's not what most people signed up for.

@nic727 Ye could have stopped after the title, says all that needs said.
But since ye took the time to write, I took the time to read. I enjoy me time on the seas too, be it searching for gold, sinking attacking ships or just sailing the beautiful seas.
Only part I no be so keen on is the actual pirate vs. pirate combat. Nowt wrong with it, I'm just not very good at it, ne'er was a first person shooter type. But alas, it no be the games fault I can't aim and shoot with a hook fur a hand.
Core mechanic - solid.
Content - thin on the ground but more be coming.
Enjoyment - aye. so much aye.I love that you’re honest with yourself about why you don’t like PvP and don’t blame the game. 👍 if only more people had that mature of a view.
@theothervillain
Yea I don't want to argue about enemy types. Calling them hazards is ok I guess."You aren't limited by the physical rules."
But you are. Even with todays amazing hardware, making games faces a lot of limitations and is a very technical and very difficult endeavour. On top of that, devs are limited by budget, talent and contracts with their publishers. Of course, in theory, anything is possible, but in reality, it could still be extremely hard to achieve and there are many limiting factors.As for movement, maybe it's the difference in devices. I've never had any issue with movement in this game, or any desire to crouch or climb. There are plenty of FPS games where you can't do either. It all depends on the style of the game. SoT simply isn't a game where you go prone in some bushes to snipe enemies. It's an arcade game.
The game is sold as a new kind of multiplayer experience, where you can go on pirate adventures with your friends or sail solo, but you can always meet other crews. It's not sold as RPG or simulator, and it isnt either of those by any stretch. :)
I love this game. Everytime im on it with frirnds I have a blast and when im alone i find it oddly relaxing. Its basically my go to game at the moment. I pre ordered it so i was all in anyways.
Do i want some stuff added? Yes. Do i think some things can be better? Yes. That doesnt mean I dislike the game and should stop playing it.

"The game is sold as a new kinda..." is becoming a common cop out for devs neglecting basic features in a game or not having a defined focus. The same thing happened with Destiny.
If this is supposed to be some kind of multiple player experience we should have multiple ways of interacting with multiple people. Right now its, music, vomit and fighting.
As far as movement it's not a difference in devices. I personally can't think of one FPS made in this generation of consoles that doesn't have crouch or climbing. Once again it reminds me of Destiny. They made the first one with no climbing, they did add it for the sequel (one of the FEW improvements). SoT should have those basic movement options at launch. It's just a quality of life issue.
@theothervillain
"neglecting basic features in a game or not having a defined focus"
Well that's kinda just your opinion.There are multiple ways of interacting. Emotes, music, vomiting, fighting, talking, stealing their stuff, giving them stuff, teaming up.
Where do you even want to climb? What FPS allows you to climb?
Besides, SoT isn't strictly an FPS. It's got FPS elements (the camera and shooting guns) but also many other game mechanics not featured in FPS games. Crouching is pointless too imo, it doesn't fit a game where the majority of time is spent sprinting around. Game simply does not need it.@captainkashus said in If you don’t like the game, just leave.:
@nic727 If I leave, do I get my $60 back?
The frustration on the forums are the result of a simple transaction. We paid for something that we thought was worth $60, when in truth it was actually worth more like $20. I would have been less frustrated if the game lived up to the price one pays for a complete game. This game is not complete. We paid for a complete game.
So to clarify, we can't just leave the game. Our discontent is justified.
EDIT: Missed words.
The problem is the mindset has been changed from buying a complete game at launch to being happy with buying a game then waiting 2 years after its " launch" to be complete.
I wonder how many of SOTs ( PC players at least) bought into star citizen. At least the developers of star citizen are being honest and admitting it's still in alpha stage when players buy it, unlike rare.
Games do not fix without suggestions/constructive criticisms. If you have people saying "I'm done, not playing this anymore." and taking the time to write out why and those same reasons are identical to ones you read before, then there is a problem. People are unhappy with specifics of the game, primarily the content and they should be. The game is standard AAA price tag at A content level, the other A's come later. Forums are also designed for discussion on the game, so someone's unhappiness with it shouldn't bother you as a person and should instead be read by people sharing the same or arguing against it. It should never be "Just leave!" cause it isn't what forums are designed for.
@nebenkuh If you think the interaction is sufficient, fair enough. That's your opinion. I'm not sure what you mean about giving them stuff. If you can trade in this game I must have missed it. Elder Scrolls Online for example you can trade, give items, build clothing items. Red dead redemption you can play cards, dice, horseshoes... that's what I mean about interaction. I've been playing this game from day one and I've yet to see any one interact with a stranger with anything other than hostility or apathy if I'm lucky.
Games that have climbing...I dont mean scale a mountain, i mean not being thwarted by a ledge. Lets see, Destiny 2, Titan Fall, GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Crysis, CoDs, Rainbow Six Siege...
There are plenty of things to climb yo. The world isn't flat. Heck, one of the outpost is a large rock tower. As far as sprinting around we must be playingthe game differently. I usually sneak around to make sure I don't run into people. You can't even sprint while you are a carrying a chest so I don't know where you are running around.
@theothervillain
I've traded skulls for supplies, for example. A solo sloop player gave us a t4 skull as token of good faith, then we did a fort together. It doesnt happen often, but it does happen.
So you mean vaulting, not climbing. I have yet to be in a situation in SoT where I could not overcome an obstacle by simply jumping. In fact, I dislike vaulting animations because it slows you down.
Where would you run into people? You always know when people are around, either because of their ship or their mermaid.@nebenkuh said in If you don’t like the game, just leave.:

Yea, vaulting, clambering... whatever. I've personally missed many a jump just because my character wouldn't grab a ledge. All I'm saying is this is the most limited game in terms of movement I've played in years. I don't expect it to be mirrors edge but I do expect it have the capabilities of an average healthy human. It honestly feels like a first gen FPS and yes, I realize you said it's not "strictly" a FPS but it is an FPS.
Where do I run into people? Large islands where you can't keep an eye on everything.
@theothervillain
Well I guess we do have very different playstyles. I've been playing FPS on PC since Half Life 1 came out. There was no vaulting, no grabbing ledges, no going prone. I guess there was crouching. To me, SoT feels perfectly natural, like any other FPS game. I can see how it might feel strange to someone who's more used to games like Assassins Creed or something.
I admit these things would be cool to have, but to me, they're hardly a priority because the game feels very smooth.On islands.. I guess I'd rather spent less time on the island by sprinting, giving me more time on the ship to scout for threats. :)
Edit:
Trading skulls for supplies happened when my galleon crew encountered a solo sloop player. He was running around an island all confused with a little treasure map, and had no treasure on board. We were low on supplies, but loaded with skulls, so we decided to be nice and trade with him. Then we invited him to discord and now he's part of our galleon. :)@nebenkuh I'm an old school gamer also man. This game reminds me of playing Doom on my 32X when I was a kid. Games evolve and I was quite happy when they did. I felt like I was playing with an actual body and not some weird bot that can only hold items.
That's cool you enjoy it. I'm just giving you a perspective of why some people feel the game is lacking. I already have the game and it ain't worth the money to trade it in so I'm going to see it through till the end but it does seem to have quite a bit of room for improvement.
@theothervillain
I can agree with that.
Just irks me when people completely dismiss the work that's already been done. Regardless of its shortcomings, SoT is one of the most beautiful and technically innovative games of this generation. :)Maybe it's because I work with 3D artists and kinda know how harsh this industry can be. So it makes me sad when people don't appreciate it.
@nebenkuh I get it. It is a beautiful game. They did an excellent job with the lighting effects, water and sailing mechanics. It's a hell of a foundation they built but it's very much missing the certain something to bring it altogether.
I honestly notice and appreciate the small details devs put in a game. It also means I notice when they are missing. I just wish there were more to SoT when it released but I do hope it survives long enough to reach the potential I believe it could be. I know Rare is capable of it because Killer Instinct is one of the most polished fighting games I have ever played. I just want that level of nuance in SoT.
It occurs to me now but I think I was expecting a 3d multiplayer version of Sid Meyer's Pirates with a Tim Burton whimsy. I think that's the best way to explain my feelings.

Oh brother, the c********k logic over this is obnoxious.
-
This game is defined on the store page as a "shared world adventure game". Every sandbox game out there pretty much has more things to do and more tools to play with than Sea of Thieves currently does.
-
Trying to dismissively insult the critics as children in the most passive aggressive manner ever doesn't do you any favors. It just makes you sound even more head-in-the-sand ignorant and like you yourself might as well be mentally immature to resort to such logic.
-
If you like to sit in a sandbox with a single little shovel that you just smack against the sand in three different ways (or smack other children instead) then I'm sure it's great fun for you, but for those of us used to meatier sandboxes or just... y'know, games that don't require us to make up our own 'fun', this game is incredibly lacking. Maybe you're the type of blind devotee who also enjoyed No Man's Sky at launch though, who knows.
Creating your own adventures is fine and all but the game currently lacks enough to properly do so for many, and drowning out the criticism as if everyone complaining are just a bunch of kids that have never had a basic sense of imagination is ridiculous. The only reason people are forced to create their own content in the first place is because of the absence of more compelling content. I didn't come to play Sea of Imagination where I just pretend that the content is there, I came to play Sea of Thieves where I get to play a pirate adventure game in a shared world.
-
@nebenkuh Plenty of people ARE leaving, and that is a problem. Saying you are happy with the game in it's current state does not change that.
Look. I want to like the game. I do like aspects of the game. I do not like companies rushing out overhyped half finished barely functional products.
You can close your eyes, cover your ears, stamp your feet, and scream "LEAVE RARE ALONE!!!!" all you want. Won't help player retention or change the fact that they fumbled the launch. Badly.
We'll be right here with a cattle prod until they get it right.
You fanboys can go into another forum section if seeing these topics hurts your feelings.

"half finished barely functional product"
See, that's just factually wrong.
Do you really expect to be taken seriously when you say things like this?
