Confessions of a Solo Sea of Theives player....

  • Greetings,

So many of a rude nature woill no doubt hurl insults at me if I dare to say I enjoy this game solo. "Its designed to be played with others, stop being so anti-social" etc., well some of us have serious social issues IRL and in games. Gaming is an escape to try and relax and be happy for me. Every time I have logged in seeing other players has been rare and I like that. I greatly enjoy sailing a solo Sloop and grinding the simple fetch quests and lok forward to new content. But eventually other players enter and harass and often make it impossible to do those simple quests. I'm legally Blind, its difficult for me to move and see in a first person perspective all the time let alone read/remember all the greetings etc. I know I'm a minority but I wish there was some kind of offline mode maybe even where u cannot interact with others where u can just sail around and grind the thre factions, maybe include more NPCs.
Its a pipedream I know, I doubt Rare will see let alone realize these issues can arise but I would like to enjoy this game too. Like bears I just like being left alone and being able to enjoy this seafaring fantastical world.

I'd love to hear from anyone else who feels the same way or maybe I'll just get kicked out or ignored but I want to shoot this flare up and see if anyone notices.

  • Hey. I think they maybe should make a soft mode for tutorial purposes for this game where you can play alone and enjoy sea of thieves alone but I am pro PVP and still think that earning gold and levelling up should be disabled in such a game mode.
Obviously I sympathise with you and your condition with your eye sight but at the same time a PVe server allowing the same level up and gold would be unfair on the majority and unfair on how this game was intended to be played.

For what it's worth, I am certain other people would sail with you and be patient.

  • I spend most of my time solo as well. That is mostly because I like to play with people I know, and often our gaming schedules don’t align.

I will say, the gold horder missions are often the easiest to solo, which leads to very uneven character progression.

  • @cmm-solo Aye, I mean I do understand pvp is a major part and always will be and there is a thril of being on your own knowing at any minute someone might come get you and yer goodies and ya gotta high tail it as fast as possible. BUT I would be all for the kind of mode you suggest, I'd totally sacrifice some things, I'd like to be able to still do the quests/missions and buy the cosmetics as there isn't much else.

  • @akasaurusrex

Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the developers decide to do I guess.

  • @akasaurusrex

Lemme just say that i know one or too people playing xbox that dont socialise IRL or in game very often or well too i dont know wether for the very same reasons ... but socialising in a video is somewhat of an easy start to begin socialising with so i guess the inherrent benefits of playing as a well coordinated galleon crew could be just the right motivation to grow unno

  • @akasaurusrex "Like bears I just like being left alone and being able to enjoy this seafaring fantastical world."

You've already misunderstood the game, it's a fantasy pirate game... It's about competitive piracy, making a legend for yourself.

This game has more similarities with Team Fortress 2 than any other game i can think of... I don't claim to know what it's like to be legally blind, i have fortunately been blessed with above average eyesight... But i'm not sure a game like Sea of Thieves, or Team Fortress 2 is the right game type for you.

Sea of Thieves is also a sandbox game, you can play it however you like, but you cannot expect protection from the main premise of the game, Pirates. :)

I also enjoy solo play sometimes, it's relaxing, if you enjoy it, good for you!

  • I hate to be rude too, but could you get to the point first..before your wall of text?

  • @akasaurusrex If you and I are ever in the same server, consider me an ally that will keep enemies off your back so you can do what you enjoy most.

I raise a pint of grog to ye. Yar!

  • @sweltering-nick Good response. I love the sailing aspect and just being in this emerging fantasy world as a means to relax. I've tried to look at it s a positive at times that it is kind of a thrill knowing any ships you see or players will most likely be hostile and try blowing ya out of the water. Heck I was on my way to an outpost with a chest and there was another sloop veering at me and it was a race and I DID manage to get there and sell the chest....just as they blew up me sloop but I managed to complete it so lol

I don't play things like Overwatch because of my vision problems. A lot of the time I don't encounter anyone or just pass em by, just being on the water with the music facing the elements can be enough for me ;p

  • @oneeyed-w1lliam I'd appreciate that be fun to man a two person sloop with yea. As some nasties have described me as a "70 yeard old trying to figure out a new cell phone" I'm rather old school I have steep learning curves to all this fancy tech stuff lol

Feel free to add me to your x box friends if you play console? I believe my tag is what it is here Akasaurus Rex, I got a youtube channel called Reptilians Reflections too if ya feel like subbing or liking a vid be cool too!

Is your x box name oneeyed-wiliam?

  • @akasaurusrex Can't find you're youtube channel searching for Reptilians Reflections. Anyway im sorry to hear about your condition, I hope if we ever meet ingame I get the chance to meet ya and hopefully you will not be in the reciving end off me doing the my pirate thing on your ship.

Tho on topic I can't agree with splitting the playerbase in anyway. Sure it hurts thoes that maybe want to play like you, but have a condition that makes it hard for them to have a level playfield, But I think as someone else said the only way they can make it would be to stop all gold, and rep, in thoes instances so people can't go in to offline mode and farm
It would not be fair, atm the only way to have some sort of achivement and competiveness in the game comes from your gold and to get legendary status. If you could farm gold and xp offline that would take away the only thing we have that we can compare to eachother and even tho its little, its the only thing we can atm messure as progression.

  • The game definitely was made with co-op in mind so the fact that you're solo-ing it, and doing so without being on par with the average player, pretty much means you're quite the b****s.

It would be nice for an offline for practice but no rewards, and hopefully SoT will be like GTAV, more content means people will be distracted with doing stuff longer. GTAV had TONS of trolls when it came out, now it's rare to see them with all the stuff to do, and most of it forces you to be in a public lobby too.

  • @cpt-toothpick Aye, well I would forgive ya or any other for blowing me out of the water or easily killing me I can't see well after all so lol

That is real strange tho, hopefully this link helps https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJY6ELZVA1LLdt2OB72PRtA

My profile pic is a lil blue Dino I made from clay kind of looks like he is from Wallace and Grommit ;p

And yeah I am just throwing out ideas, I am used to being part of the minority. I do believe in democracy, the needs of the many outweigh those of the few, as a certain Vulcan once said and many activists seem not to agree with at times ;p

  • @capn-daxio Thanks for that! I actually have vision problems that make me look piraty in that I see pretty much with one eye tot he point my eye docs have said I might see better if I wore an eye patch, as I have severe ptosis or drooping eye in the bad eye.

Because I am a stubborn, anti social old bull I've actually thought it would be a fun challenge to reach Pirate legend completely solo, without the aid of anyone else. Be cool if they had an acheivement for it ;p

  • @akasaurusrex Remember don't forget to yell Parley, IF it's my crew we honour the pirate code and give a fair departure ^^

I would like to second that. Even if you need some friendly pirate banter......I'll sail with ye laddie!

Yet, sadly, accidental rudeness occurs alarmingly often. -Dumbledore

When the legally blind person takes time to write a lengthy composition, it's perhaps a bit distasteful to say you are too lazy to be bothered reading it.

  • I personally enjoy the solo sailing and questing - it IS good to have a friend or two on board however. A shared experience is all the nicer.
But there's just something about you, your boat and the open seas.
    It's why I'm predominantly a solo sailor.
So I can vaguely understand where you're coming from.
To make it more interesting, maybe some NPC manned ships, and a single player mode?
