Currently, the process includes me logging on, inviting friends to play only to find out there is a game incompatibility. The first time this happened I had no idea what was going on since there is no obvious avenue to updating the product. Finally I stumbled upon just trying to start the game from the app store. This is where I get the White Screen of Updating. There is no indicator of the process or even if there is an update happening. All I know is at some time in the future when I retry to play the game through the app store it actually starts and is updated.

@aliasmask You need to turn on background updates for windows apps through the windows store. Then the game will auto update and you'll never have a problem.
It also lets other windows apps update which is annoying but I guess thats the price of convenience.
Thanks for the clue as to where I can find the updates. My autoupdate is actually on but doesn't happen until I go to the microsoft store and click on the ..., Select Downloads and Updates and then double click Sea of Thieves.
