How can I get back to the starter island/outpost?

  • Hello folks,

Downloaded the game yesterday and am very disappointed with the complete and utter lack of any new player onboarding experience (e.g. tutorials, etc). As it stands, I left the starter outpost without picking up any missions (Voyages, I gather they're called), and on my way back towards the starter outpost I dinged the outer hull of the ship and sunk it. Washed up on an island with several skeletons, who eventually overwhelmed me and I died. Went through the bizarre little ghost ship thing and respawned in the main world, but I have no idea where I am, and no idea where the starter outpost/island is or even what it was called to try and locate it on the map.

I never would have thought that in 2018, I would need to look up a starter guide for a brand new game of this scale and caliber before I even booted it up. All I am trying to do now is figure out how to get back to the beginning island to maybe do some of the supposed "starter voyages" that exist there.

  • @manthas there's no starter island, you start at any outpost and can sail to any other outpost or island

  • @manthas uhhh... never in 2018 did i think a game this simple would require hand holding.

Did you not explore the island you were on like a normal person? You would have found the voyage people and bought some.

Did you not at least scope out your boat before setting sail? You would have noticed u have some oddly marked barrels with "planks" and "bananas" under deck. I wonder what those would be used for?!!?

You jumped into a game and straight up sailed away. Didn't actual try to figure anything out on your own. Rammed into a rock and expect the game screen to flash bright red and say "hello nooblet grab a plank and repair".

I could understand the not knowing controls or how things work but the basic things i just mentioned means you didn't take the time to even explore where u were at or look at a map or get a basic understanding of your surroundings.

  • @manthas there are no tutorials. I presume you are playing solo, which is it for veteran players. It even says so When selecting so low that it is not suggested for new players. The reason for this is is that you can learn things from other players by being a random in a duo or Galleon crew. That being said, at the back of the Sloop which is the Solo or Duo option ship, is a map table. Any Outpost listed on the map has missions you can buy from either the gold Hoarders, order of souls, or Merchants Alliance. You can have three voyages. Proposal voyage on the small table across from the map table. Vote for the mission to begin. Your ship comes with cannonballs, planks, and bananas. Not a lot but enough to keep you alive. You can find more in barrels and crates around the world. You need to pull out a plank from your inventory if you want to repair a hole in your ship. You need to have a cannonball in order to fire one from the cannon and eating bananas will heal you.

The game is pretty self-explanatory. If you have water below deck you need to bucket it out. So equip your bucket. If it's dark equip your Lantern. Practice with sailing and adjusting your sails in order to gain wind and you should be efficient at it in as little as 15 minutes.

  • Hey Buddy!!
First off, let me welcome you to Sea of Thieves. Don't mind the trolls
I was a bit surprised myself at the lack of tutorials, but having seen some YouTube videos, I did have an inkling of what was expected of me; though it did take a bit of experimenting with the controls to figure out where each item was.
One cool tip I can give you though, is you can map your buttons to fit your style in settings. I use Xbox and I changed the Emote and Chat grids on the D-pad to be on the right and left, (instead of up and down) and I assigned bananas to UP and Planks to DOWN. That way I can quickly restore my health while in battle or quickly rush to repair the ship without having to go though the item wheel.

Hope you enjoy the game, there is a lot more to it that what meets the eye, and if you get the chance to join a 4 man crew on a Galleon, I highly recommend it. Especially if they are character and won't stop talking like Pirates. Loads of fun!!!

  • Look me up and i’ll show you around some! Not to worry!

  • @manthas you can also add me as a friend. I play weekdays in the evenings us Mountain Time. I've been playing regularly since the closed betas and can show you some helpful tips and tricks to the game.

  • OK, let's break down just how useless and terrible your response is, here.

I'm glad you find the game so simple. Congratulations. This response has added zero value except to act as an opening salvo of "git gud".

Did you not explore the island you were on like a normal person? You would have found the voyage people and bought some.

    1. Yes, I did explore the island. I spoke to every person on the island that could be interacted with and I talked through many of the story elements with them.
    2. I suspect I did find one or more "voyage people", but the presentation was unclear as to what the player is expected to do.

Did you not at least scope out your boat before setting sail? You would have noticed u have some oddly marked barrels with "planks" and "bananas" under deck. I wonder what those would be used for?!!?

Gee, you like to make an awful lot of assumptions here. Congratulations on being a grade A complete and total tool. Yep, the planks and bananas are pretty obvious what they're for. One of the first things the game has you do as a new player (one of the two only onboarding steps done), is to have you pick up and eat a banana.

You jumped into a game and straight up sailed away. Didn't actual try to figure anything out on your own. Rammed into a rock and expect the game screen to flash bright red and say "hello nooblet grab a plank and repair".

Did I say I rammed in to a rock? No, I did not. You know why I didn't say that? Because that's not what happened. I specifically said that I dinged the outer hull, because the sound level barely registered as I sailed by the outcropping.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do expect a game to provide a way for the player to learn the aspects of how and when to do things within the context of the game. It is called player onboarding, and you'd do well to look it up, because it includes far more than just straight tutorials, and this game does none of it.

I could understand the not knowing controls or how things work but the basic things i just mentioned means you didn't take the time to even explore where u were at or look at a map or get a basic understanding of your surroundings.

Guess what, "buying quests" would be one topic under "how things work" in this game. Seeing an item for sale from what appears to be a vendor does not automatically register as "here's a quest for you" to folks that are familiar with even semi-traditional MMOs.

The best part about your whole screed here is how you didn't even make an attempt to answer the original question of how to get back to the starter island/outpost. If this is your idea of "helping" someone, here's a piece of advice. Don't.

  • @gordon-sevencav Yeah, I stated up front about the no tutorials or onboarding here. That's a major problem, and quite frankly just ties in to what led to my question of how to get back to the starting point in the game. The mechanics of sailing were pretty easy to figure out, agreed, but the game gives you absolutely nothing to go on. If you can restart at any given outpost in the game, I will try and find one near where I'm at on the map and head there.

Ok here i'll go a little in depth. You are one of a small community that logs into a brand new game without ever seeing a gameplay trailer, without ever seeing anyone else even partake in it. You logged into this game expecting there to be a hold hands tell me exactly when and where i need to do it and how. This isn't this type of game, so i'm sure we will all see your forum post in a few days about how you got griefed cough cough pvp'd and lost your stuff. Then we'll see your final post where u are demanding a refund and will never come back.

Its not hard to understand that you might need to take 10 minutes to watch some of the dev videos or look up a streamer if this is that hard for you. The vendor literally has 3 gleaming things on its page that u simply click. Its not a tiny object or something hidden away.

Considering your post gave little to no detail besides that you bumped a rock a sunk and were complaining about a "starter island" means you made the most assumptions you could have ever in this game. You bought it without even knowing what you purchased. As i mentioned before i'll be sure to keep an out for your grief posts and you're im quitting post due to the assumptions of a tutorial and assumptions of a save starting island etc.

Did I say I rammed in to a rock? No, I did not. You know why I didn't say that? Because that's not what happened. I specifically said that I dinged the outer hull, because the sound level barely registered as I sailed by the outcropping.

    You hit a rock. L**O

Watch videos get involved in the hype, don't arbitrarily buy a game and just expect everything to be like another game you've played in the past. Thats not smart and you will lose your money.

    this isn't and MMO.

There is no starter island. There are 5 outposts all over the map and if you had taken 10 seconds to actually look at the map you would have noticed it with a certain level of common sense. Although thats me assuming AGAIN in this post that you even have a tidbit of it.

  • @manthas If you just quit the game and then restart it you will be back at a outpost. If you need more help just post away. It's not a friendly game if you play solo, most people will just kill you, seal your stuff, and sink your ship.

  • @jwspeed I'm fairly adept with the Solo play but I would not recommend it for beginner. Took on two galleons just this morning. I sunk one and the other ran off.

You don't actually need a voyage either. Rep and money come from turning in valuables, chests and precious items like ornate boxes or lectures are sold to gold hoarders. Skulls to order of souls, and animals and trade goods such as sugar, spices, silk, and explosive barrels can all be sold to the merchant alliance. You can just go and look for sunken ships, signaled by circling seagulls over head. Also a part of a ship poking out gives it away too. These will have random loot in them as well as ship supplies. You can also find treasure on beaches or hidden on island's. You can make your fortune just cruising around looking around.

  • @manthas Easiest way is to quit and relog in. After that just get the hang of using the map and you can go to any Outpost (they all act the same).

With regards to your tutorial comment - I honestly prefer it this way, I didn't realize how tired I was of games holding my hand through the process, it's nice to just figure it out for once, definitely adds to the exploration/discovery aspect of it.

  • Watch some newbie videos on YouTube. Will help you learn the ropes.

I did and so far I have only lost a empty chicken crate.
