Is the New Ship coming in the Summer a "War Galleon"

  • When I heard there were multiple ship types in Sea of Thieves I was super excited, I wanted Warships taking on groups of other medium to large ships and all we got was Sloops and Galleons, don't get me wrong, I love both of the ships we got. But, it just left me wanting more, my Galleon crew and I never seem to have trouble fighting anyone, and the community just seems to avoid working together to take down a formidable crew.

Anyways, what I am getting at here is having a MASSIVE 5-6 man crew ship that can only be used if you que in 5-6 people on your friends list, no random que people because then everyone would just sail around in these ships and it would just be a giant target out on the sea. I want this ship to be so intimidating it makes the 2 Galleons say "lets team up, sink that War Beast!" And then it all plays out like that scene at the end of the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie... I think. Or, you get a LEGENDARY 2 on 1 battle that makes you think back when you play the game.

Plus it opens doors for people with more than 4 friends who want sail together, like myself.

I think Rare has proven themselves when it comes to designing ships that honestly require a certain amount of people to man it efficiently, especially in the heat of a Skeleton Fort Pirate War. Personally, I've sunk Galleons at Skeleton Forts in a 2 man Sloop, and I've fought off and sunk an endless wave of sloops at a Skeleton Fort with my Galleon Crew. I love the adaptability that is required to be an effective crew on both the Galleon and the Sloop but I am just left wanting more when it comes to sailing in the ships.

  • @medicinalsquid I woulden't say war galleon more like a man o war

  • @roughleech03117 I'm not familiar with the classification terms of ships lol

  • @medicinalsquid oh ok

  • If they make a larger, more heavily armed ship like a man-o-war, they are going to need to make it slower, and turn slower. I think it would be cool, but whatever it is going to be it will have to be balanced with the existing ships.

  • im not big on the pvp side of the game and would prefer to stick to adventuring.
im sure there is (or should be) a genre for massive naval battles but i hope its not here lol

  • I'd rather have a junk or something in between Galleon and Sloop with two sails.

  • @lord-sphinktus I mean, can you really balance the ships when a lot of "Who gets sunk by who" is a matter of player skill - this is just my experience. But, I think two skilled players in a sloop could easily sink a galleon with some not-so-skilled players aboard, and a good crew on a Galleon will never be sunk by a bunch of "Low-Class Pirates" (Had to throw the One Piece reference in there as I am a nerd who loves Anime lol)

  • Im hoping for a man o war but im also hoping they come out with a two sail ship between the sloop and the galleon

  • im hoping for a more brig type of ship 2-3 players 2 mast

  • The galleon can feel sluggish even with 4 people. Idk if a new bigger ship with slower speed and turning is really the answer.

With a capable sloop already able to wreak havoc on a galleon, I can see said sloop being an absolute nightmare for an even bigger ship with worse swiveling speed than a galleon.

Yes I know some people with their crews will always say things like “har har see you on the sea you’ll never sink me and my crew we’ve never been sunk we sunk every ship in sight every time all day yada freakin yada.”

But I just don’t see a huge ship with a bunch of people even being able to sail well around this sea where they’ve actually placed a lot of hazards and islands that are closer together than they appear. I could be entirely wrong though.

  • I think alot more people have asked for a 3 person ship so they would prolly do that first, and they have said that they think more than 4 people is too much for each person to shine

  • It'll be a frigate or a brig I can say that much.

  • Yah its gota be a three man. They dont wana go more than 4 (not that they cant) and 1/2/4 are covered so gota be three. OR could just be a very different version of the others. Who knows, if they go ahead with the 4man sloop 1man galleon they will need to do a lot of reworking on ship balancing anyhow.

  • @medicinalsquid I think will be the 3 man ship, which is really missing right now

  • I'm gonna be frank here, if we were to get a 5-6 man ship, We'd need bigger servers, having just 3 or so of these roaming the ocean, combat would never happen, too spread apart.

and I know Rare wants to have bigger servers, and on the PC side it is as easy as flipping a switch, so it must be something else: the xbox probably can't handle larger servers.

With that in mind, we're likely getting the 3 man ship instead.

  • My guess it will be a ship that fits in between the sloop and galleon, like a brig. I think the galleon is going to be the biggest ship we get unless they allow 5-6 man crews.

  • Just for clarification, anyone know the differences between frigate, brig, and schooner?

I thought a frigate was bigger than a galleon. And I was told a schooner is the size in between a sloop and galleon. Idk what a brig even is. Nor do I really know what the other two even are.

Anyone got insight before I try to google it?

Brig is a two-masted, square-rigged ship between a sloop and a galleon in size. I've been aboard two.

Frigates were triple-mast warships, though were quite different in design from the Galleon. Frigates sat lower than the Galleon, and were longer.

  • I think a mid class ship, for 2-3 people, would be more "balanced", because a man o'war (I admit is a cool idea) would need 5-6 people at least and I don't think sloop player will be happy to be overwhelmed 2v6 or worst 1v6.

So I bet for the 2-3 people ship

  • @medicinalsquid What about a clipper? :-)

  • I imagine it's going to be a 3 man ship. Most crews are comprised of randoms playing together. I've already spent a bunch of time on galleons that have me doing everything, with other crew mates just standing around waiting to fight or go to an island. Imagine trying to run a 6 man ship with a bunch of random people who do nothing..... Nightmare!

  • its the missing middle class 3 man 2 cannons on each side 2 mass ship.

  • I am pretty sure (and hope) they're gonna do a 2-3 man ship/boat for the middle crews.
A Man-o-War could be cool, but we need a middle boat and the galleon could easily host 5-6 people already if enough people want that. We "need" more people on the Galleon and that would make that ship a BEAST on the waters with more people on the cannons leacving others to repair. But thats just my 2 cents!

  • Honestly, what I want to see in a new ship is the third variable that has not been filled. The galleon is known for its firepower that can bombard other ships and sink them in less than a minute if done well. The sloop is known for its maneuverability, dodging and weaving between shots with their faster turning. So the third variable I would like to see filled is a ship known for its high defence. It could have just two cannons a side, but put them in the mid-section. It could have a pair of masts and a thicker(?) hull which might take slightly longer for water to pass through a hole or something. That doesn't sound as good when I write it down, but my idea still stands. I'd love to see it, but what do you guys think?

  • i think developing a Man o War would be a little too early since there is already a lot of controversy behind sloops vs. galleons.

i think we either need a true one/two person ship or a 3 person ship.

the reason why we may need a true two person ship is because the sloop provides greater benefits when two people are sailing it. the ship was originally designed to be sailed by one person, in which every function of the ship was fairly close to each other. that, or a true one person ship that is smaller and more maneuverable than the sloop, while also giving it the ability to sail on extremely shallow waters (imagine sailing within the rivers of Sharkbait Cove with ease). this is a good alternative if so many people like to sail with their friend on a sloop.

a three person ship would also be just as welcoming. a lot of people just want to play with two other friends. too many people are being brigged because of this and there are also arguments that a galleon is much harder to sail without one other person.

still, with all consideration for controversies aside, a five person Man o War would be really cool.

  • I wouldn't say to add something as big as the Man o War class but if they do decide to add a new ship class to the game I would suggest either a Brig or a Frigate.

  • It'll probably be a middle sized option, like a frigate or longboat

  • Literally the worst idea ever.

  • A bigger, slower ship isn't going to be of much use... If it can never bring said firepower to bare against a sloop who's crew knows what they're doing.

  • @medicinalsquid a larger ship like that would be even more difficult to sail then the galleon. So allowing randoms to queue into them isn't a problem. They'll quickly learn a group of randoms will just fail at sailing it.

  • @medicinalsquid if they gonna do a 5-6 ppl ship they are forced to increase number of players on a server.

That's OK, neither are Rare, apparently :).
