Easy fix for Riddle quests

  • Lettuce be cereal for a moment. Most people either A give up on riddle quests or B just skip them all together...

    Such a simple fix. Riddle quests should only produce Captains chests or better. Period. We already are getting screwed on Captains chests as is. Half the time they sell for less than 700 which is total BS as is. People would actually do them if you could get good chests out of them. Let's get those up votes so they get this done asap! I wanna get more gold already!!!

    Edit: I my self simply skip them because a single chest with a chance for a castaways is trash. I don't have time to waste on trash loot, too high level for that and anyone saying they are having fun doing puzzles for castaways is trolling.

  • But riddle quests are already so easy. The longest I've had was a 4 clue quest (which usually are similar looking landmarks from quest to quest regardless)

    While playing with randoms I have not noticed people skipping them, or ignoring them.

    I don't agree with guaranteed captains chest either, as at any faction lvl you can get exquisite or barnacle loot.

    However the quest are lacking what the standard map quests have, multiple chests. Maybe if a map for the same island was given after the first is found, or at each of the clues given there is a chest.

    Just my 2c

  • They should just get rid of castaway chest, or make it as rare as cursed or 1000 grog chest, then everyone will be happy

  • @sailro you must of not run into the ones where they don't work and it takes forever to get the clue to "activate". Also yes the best pirates are skipping them lol. It's a time based loot game. A single chest on a island is a waste of time. If your not canceling all c****y voyages and only doing the good ones (multi chest islands) Wasting time Ye be. Lol and if your telling me a castaways is worth even a 2 clue riddle. It's not. That's a massive waste of time which equals money. No one said they were hard lol, just huge wastes of time. Which they are. Level 0-20 should give nothing lower then seafarers. 20-30 nothing lower than marauders and after 30 nothing but captains chests or better.

  • Ive got two problems with riddle quests:

    1. They aren't really riddles. At least... they arent riddles any 8 year old can't immediately solve. You basically need to only read three words from every riddle: the direction, the marker ID (what you're looking for), and what to do at the marker. You never have to figure out what that marker ID is because it just tells you.
    2. They are written like a child would make a scavenger hunt. Putting all of the scavenger hunt items on a single page, so you could just read the last one and skip all the others.

    Why do subsequent riddle lines appear magically after solving the previous line? Just give me one riddle that leads to uncovering the next riddle... Make me play a song at a magic rock that then shifts aside and reveals a slip of paper with the next riddle.

    Additional note... I think only the person who paid for the quest from the NPC and put it on the captain's table should get the map or riddle. That way, there would be a purpose (beside hilarity) to showing your crew the map/riddle. Obviously still allow any crew member to uncover the additional riddle lines and allow everyone to get gold rewards.

  • Maybe vary the quests at higher level even further, granting more chests per island and better bundles of loot. I know they do this a little, but they need to amp it up.
    Then give the higher rep pirates a choice when they pick a voyage. Do a lower rep, quicker voyage (when you gotta make dinner in an hour), or do a higher rep, longer voyage for better pay (when you have a couple hours to kill).

    This is aside from the obvious fact that we need different ways to earn gold. Races, Shooting Contests, Duels, Delivery Runs, Smuggling, Theft, Assassinations, Talent Shows, Underwater Basket Weaving. You know, pirate stuff.

  • @feeder87 right.... they are a a huge waste. Atleast once your over level 10 lol. Honestly we are getting screwed on chests anyway. Captains regular sell for less than 700 which is BS. villianous skulls rarely sell for less than 1g.

  • Can't find a buried chest from an ole riddle quest? I believe I be findin' a solution to yer problem with riddle quests, get a higher IQ ye bufoon, it makes findin them chest a wee bit easier

  • So far I've only had 1 riddle that we couldn't solve. Granted, it was at the very start of the game. We found the location the riddle was speaking of, but couldn't get it to activate. I suppose it could have just been a bug / glitch. I've never seen that same riddle clue again since.

    I don't mind the riddles, and think they're somewhat fun to solve. They're generally not very hard especially if you're playing with a friend or even a whole crew. Going solo can be a bit tedious at times. I don't think they're any harder than some of the regular X marks the spot treasure maps. I've had a few of those that took a few min to find the right spot.

    I really think the chests should be worth much more than they currently are. It seems kinda of silly you can run around doing 3-4 quests and come back with 1 castaway, 2 seafarers, and a marauders and only yield 800-1000 in gold for 45min+ of work assuming you didn't battle anyone on the way.

  • They're literally the most fun type of quest. I'd rather do those than wander around staring at a map.

    Problem solving skills yo... get good

  • @capnswayzjones

    I made a thread about this previously, I suggest that the number of steps in the riddle correspond to the potential chest type.

    2 = castaway or seafarer
    3 = seafarer or marauder
    4 = marauder or captain

    The 4 parters with the vague final step (not direction + # of steps) = captain or grog.

    That way they function similar to the other quests where you get an inkling about loot potential, like you can see the number of bosses on skelly quests or the number of X's on the other gold hoarder maps, or the animal types from the merchant.

  • @capnswayzjones Your right, I've never had a single riddle quest not work for me (having much more issues with the order of souls skeletons).

    That being said, I've never gotten a castaways chest from completing ones either. Its the luck of the draw, and as you level up your luck increases with more opportunities to try it.

    I never skip a voyage, even the "c****y" ones, and if that excludes me from being apart the "best pirates" then so be it. But know that it is not a waste of time, it is an adventure. The loot is just an additive to sweeten the deal- and the riddle a challenge to heighten the immersion. Though you may treat this game like a time based loot game, it will always remain a shared world adventure game

  • @mrbrocksego XD I have 400k+ lol please. Secondly I SKIP them because a single chest for an island when it could be a seafarers or less is a huge waste of time. If your wasting time, your not good at the game. If your not canceling all time wasting voyages and only doing the multi chest ones....you need to get good.... I have zero issue finding them.

  • @capnswayzjones The game is about interacting with other players not getting chests.

    Personally I like to use the seafarer chests as griefer bait. Its a lot of fun, I'd say I get more fun out of a seafarer or castaway chest than I do out of a captains chest. Since the chests just give you meaningless gold and meaningless reputation

  • @mrbrocksego

    I disagree, the game is about whatever you want it to be about, if you get your kicks that way cool, but if some people enjoy grinding out the quests that's fine too.

    I don't see how making the riddle rewards a bit more apparent upon getting the maps (as they are for every other quest type)would negatively impact anyone's experience.

  • @sailro Look when you get to 42/35/30...you will no longer feel that way. It was fun when I was new. But l**o it is not an adventure wasting time my friend. It sounds like you haven't been to every single island atleast 50 times by now. When you have, please tell me how much you enjoy getting a castaways. Also if you haven't got a castaways yet from a riddle. You haven't been playing near enough lol. It's SUPER common. Secondly I have level 40 voyages lol. Try sailing across the entire map for a castaways. Which happens lol.

  • @mrbrocksego Of course I use them as bait but l**o. I never get attacked or even boarded. So kind of a waste then yeah? Secondly I'd say the majority of people are playing to do quests and get loot not just screw around making no money....Just because you won't get to legendary (with the way you say you like to play) doesn't mean I wouldn't like to. Lastly lol how is getting better chests less fun in any way? Weirduuuh.

  • It's a matter of scaling the reward to difficulty for the feeling of player gratification/accomplishment, RNG is fine but the reward should match difficulty/effort/time-to-complete.

    The harder the task the greater the reward, longer riddle=better chest, same with skeletons should be applied, harder mobs = better skull.

    It can end up feeling really frustrating and unfair/unlucky when the game RNG's difficulty and RNG's reward separately.

  • @capnswayzjones Congratulations on your faction levels.

    Frankly I'm 25/37/15 and have more than enough experience traveling to all of the islands numerous times. Usually going from corner to corner. So please, spare me the "you're new to the game" attitude.

    Having bad luck with chests (or any loot for that matter) is disappointing yes- demanding a rare chest because of it? Petty.

    I typically refrain from the gold hoarders quests, because there is little challenge within them (with the exemption of riddles). That being said, I have never had a castaway chest from them- not because I "haven't been playing near enough". I simply require more stimulus to truly enjoy SOT than- Travel to island B, and dig up treasure X. Continually. Riddles add so much more depth than a map with marked X's ever could.

    The premise of any game is to enjoy the experience that you make for yourself. If you choose to spend all of your time playing grinding gold hoarders missions, using SOT purely as a "time based loot game", then I can see the frustration timely quests for a castaways chest.

    But I'll advise instead, that you'd be wasting your time.

    The SOT experience largely depends on other aspects such as puzzles, adventuring, and other shenanigans that simply grinding for gold/pirate status cannot offer.

    Which is the point I think you are missing.

    Nothing currently will give you an advantage over the next scurvy dog. So playing solely for loot is a momentous waste of time (weather the chest you get from a riddle is a captains or castaways), when you could have been having a one-of-a-kind experience instead.

    It's the adventure you make it to be.
