Are chests supposed to sink and be unretrievable?

  • In a single session today, about 15 chests were lost from ships I sunk, as they too sunk below and I was unable to pick them up. I haven't seen this until today. I swam to the bottom as far as I could to search for the chest hitboxes.

I'm assuming this is unintentional, in which case it is a very catastrophic bug to the core of the game, and should be a top priority.

  • @jingleberry69 No, most if not all chests and items should be floating up into view not too long after a ship is sunk.

  • @jingleberry69 Yep you're right it's a bug.

2 fixes that sometimes work are to get another player to pick them up and they will float to top again,
or if your character dies and re-spawns it may allow you to pick them up yourself.

  • @swan I saw all of the chests floating the water (I had sunk as well), and when I came back they were all sunk. Luckily, I moved the captain's chest to land, but they were too far away to bother getting the rest.

  • Sounds like something they should consider keeping in the game.

    Did someone steal your treasure?

  • I had this happen to me, and it sounds like it happened a little fast in your case, but I had 3 chests with me in the water and they all stayed afloat for a good time but after about 10 min (estimate) they started to sink. I believe after a amount of time all treasure will sink to the locker.

  • @jingleberry69 No........

  • Just to be clear, I'm not advocating for anything here, I'm not taking sides, so don't come at me with toxicity.

When a boat sinks (or when it despawns after sinking) everything on board, skulls, chests, crates and all will float to the top of the ocean. They will stay floating for awhile (around 2 minutes I believe), then they will start to sink. Once they get to the bottom of the ocean, they despawn.

This is not a bug, it was put into the game intentionally. If you want them not to sink, you have to get them to land, or pick them up and put them back down to reset their timers. This is in place someone simulate loot being lost to the sea after being left alone in the water for too long.

  • @sweetcalf942652 That makes perfect sense, I see no problem with that.

  • @jingleberry69 It has always been the case that they float but only for a while. Then after a while they sink and you have to swim down to grab em or else they despawn. Been that way since the betas.
