We were heading to an island for a 3 treasure dig. Another ship met us there...we battle, and eventually 2 stay on ship, 2 go do treasure....but skellies were there so we kill em, wave after wave. Turns out one of us boards their ship and sees the mission on the table for order of souls. We eventually had to fight 4 bosses, killed em, got the skulls...then dug up our treasures and the other ship gave up and left. Interesting.

I stolen plenty of skeletons from others ships as well, after we sink their ship the skeletons will still spawn, it's hillarious. =þ
I'm pretty sure however that it doesn't work for gold digging.

Not read, but steal definitly.
You can go to their questtable and look what mission is on there, you can see the type but not the maps.You didn't "steal" their quest. The skeleton spawn is generated when you get the mission/map, so they'll appear for whoever gets to the island first. I picked up an order of souls message in a bottle and thought I'll get on that later, but as I was sailing around I kept getting pop up messages saying "Captain X has been defeated", so I guess someone else got to the island first.

The skeletons of an Order of the Souls Voyage are triggered when the island name Pop up is shown. And that is the way you can steal the quest.
