Tacking

  • Has anyone tried racing (sloop v sloop or galleon v galleon) with one going straight into the wind and one tacking? Obviously there is some leeway in this game when considering actual sailing vs the game, so I wanted to know if tacking actually made moving into the wind faster.
If so, what angle was the tacking being done at? I've tried some very basic tacking and at 45* it doesn't seem like you get where you're going any faster (actually feels slower) but I was by myself. With a crew and coordinated movements it would probably work better. However maybe like a 15* tack might be faster than dead into the wind. Any feedback in this one?

  • @cashmerecaptian I've seen only nominal gains/rewards for tacking and jibbing correctly against someone driving directly into the wind. I would like to see this adjusted in favor of the better sailor(s).

Also would like to see damage upped or even included for dropping anchor when under full sail.

  • I have tried tacking and also have not noticed any major gains, so now I just say screw it and sail straight on in the wind.

  • I have noticed some minor gains but at lower angles. 45º also felt slower to me (it seemed to be the same though but it def felt slower)

  • I used to try to do this but it really seems like I'm better off taking a direct course because the speed gained doesn't seem to make up for the extra sea being traversed. Of course, this is entirely anecdotal. I'd love to hear about anyone's testing results if they manage to get an opportunity.

  • We caught a sloop in a galleon tacking while they mostly sailed into headwinds (not always). However, we mostly tacked on close haul when the sloop went into headwinds and tacked on close reach when the sloop was in close haul.

I'm a sailor IRL, so this game seems to embrace some of the elements of actual sailing as long as you get the sail placements right!

  • @cashmerecaptian It tried it when I was in a sloop chasing another sloop in the beta

To me it seemed any speed I gained didnt make up for the distance lost while zig zagging. Maybe wasnt doing it optimally but pretty sure I was close.

People who suggest tacking works when the topic comes up im pretty sure are just trying to sound clever because its a thing in real life and they found out about it on Wikipedia

  • It's so hard to find cooperative people to test things like this in game. I love PvPing and taking out other ships, but sometimes, even when trying hard to appeal to another crew, it's impossible to find someone to cooperate with.

  • @personalc0ffee Basically in real life you can't sail directly into the wind because it starts to push you backwards. As a result, you have to make multiple turns to keep the wind moving through your sails and pushing you forward. Tacking is turning so that the front of your boat crosses the wind direction. The multiple turns allow you to end up at the point you would have reached if you could travle in a straight line.
Edit: and now I'm questioning whether this is a bit of a bait post...

I sail irl and this games random wind physics are hot garbage🤣

  • @personalc0ffee I'm glad to hear it. Any specific part that you don't get or just the overall concept?

  • I have used a tacking sailing strategy to evade galleons a few times, it's not the speed that helps though it's the way the sloop manouvers much more quickly under steep turning and quick sail changes. Knowing about tacking gave me the idea to try this strategy and while it didn't make me faster it certainly helped me gain distance on a persuing galleon.

  • @lord-sphinktus Yes. Utilising the ability to maneuver is where you gain ground on the galleon while on a sloop, especially near islands. The sloop being a coastal vessel, this makes a lot of sense. Trying to straight line from a galleon on the open seas will never work just look how much speed you are wasting going up and down those swells while the galleon powers on through.

  • If you put sail and Hull directly into a headwind you would go backwards...

This does not happen in the game. I suspected Rare discussed it though.

If they add additional ships I hope they tweak the sailing physics to help balance and bring a little more realism.
